Meier traded to Devils by Sharks for 4 players, 3 draft picks (NHL.com)

Timo Meier was traded to the New Jersey Devils by the San Jose Sharks on Sunday.

63) by the Devils in the 2017 NHL Draft, Zetterlund had eight points (three goals, five assists) in 14 games last season, his first in the NHL. Johnsson, 28, has 29 points (nine goals, 20 assists) in 36 games with Utica of the American Hockey League. "I like to shoot the puck and try to get to the net, those areas where I can be a threat to score. "It's the skill set, the ability to score goals, and the body size. "I could sit there and say I'm confident (we will re-sign him), but what I am confident in is who we are and what we what we can sell ... "The players told me where they were, and it's no different than in the past. The Devils (39-15-5), who are 8-2-1 in their past 11 games, are second in the Metropolitan Division, three points behind the Carolina Hurricanes. We weren't buyers in the past for the obvious. If that pick is in the top 10, the Devils will have the option of transferring their first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft instead. Selected by San Jose in the first round (No. The Devils also received defensemen Scott Harrington and Santeri Hatakka, forward prospect Timur Ibragimov, goalie prospect Zachary Emond, and a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. How are the Rangers affected by Timo Meier-Devils deadline deal ... (amNY)

The Eastern Conference is a warzone in the NHL this season. Not that it hasn't been in recent years, but the New York Rangers certainly have their work cut.

In trying to fit under cap and roster constraints, New York has had to play the minimum amount of players possible so they can fit Patrick Kane on the roster. Jersey is only three points back of Carolina for the top spot in the Metro division. The Rangers have plenty of stars across their roster, but they need the balance that would come with a Patrick Kane deal. New Jersey has made tremendous strides this season and is on the cusp of a playoff berth. The addition of Vladimir Tarasenko was seen as a move that bolstered the offense for the Rangers while allowing their matchup advantages to play out. Not that it hasn’t been in recent years, but the New York Rangers certainly have their work cut out for them as the calendar turns to March.

Timo Meier trade: Three takeaways from Sharks' blockbuster deal ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

San Jose Hockey Now's Sheng Peng takes a deep dive into Timo Meier's trade to the Devils and what GM Mike Grier had to say about the move.

Then I think the last couple weeks, I think it was starting to weigh on his mind of 'What's going to happen, where am I going to play' type thing. The 2024 first-rounder is a bit complicated, it relies on the 2022-23 Devils making the Conference Finals (and Meier playing 50 percent of the playoff games) or the 2023-24 Devils making the Conference Finals (doesn’t matter how many playoff games that Meier plays in that run). It was on his mind to start the season, then I think he just played hockey and did what he always did. The only thing that I can think, there just wasn’t the interest in Meier, not enough to shake a Grade-A asset like the Devils’ Dawson Mercer or Simon Nemec, the St. I think for him, sometimes it takes a while to figure out how you need to play and what you need to do to stay in the NHL. Look at the gymnastics it took to fit Meier’s relatively-paltry $6 million this season into New Jersey’s cap – the Sharks had to take on Johnsson and his $3.4 million salary. That’s a good player, I was given a C-plus grade for him, in terms of his value, by the same scout. That was a bit of a harsh assessment by the NHL scout above. I think you guys can kind of see how great a year [Timo] was having, how great a year Erik [Karlsson's] having, and where we still are results-wise in the standings. I think he's willing to do the little things now, and he plays on the inside, which was really important to us. As for what the Sharks gave up, defenseman Santeri Hatakka is a sleeper prospect who’s been hurt all year, with a chance to return this season. I think he's done that…I think what Fabian's learned is that you've got to play in the hard areas.

In seven seasons with the Sharks, he topped 20 goals five times and 30 goals three times. Meier, Prospects, Pick Acquired by Devils in Trade with Sharks ... (NHL.com)

Harrington, Hatakka, Ibragimov, Emond, and 2024 fifth-round pick round out the trade for New Jersey.

If New Jersey's first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft is a top 10 selection, New Jersey will have the option to instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft to San Jose. Before his professional experience, Meier played in the QMJHL for parts of three seasons with Halifax (2013-14 to 2015-16) and then Rouyn-Noranda in 2015-16. The last time Meier appeared in the post-season was in 2018-19, when he helped San Jose advance to the Western Conference Final and logged 15 points (5g-10a) in 20 games played. The forward's 52 points ranked second on San Jose this season, while his 13 power-play goals rank seventh (tie) in the NHL and established a career-high. The New Jersey Devils today acquired forwards Timo Meier, Timur Ibragimov, defensemen Scott Harrington, Santeri Hatakka, goaltender Zachary Emond and a fifth-round pick (originally Colorado's selection) in the 2024 NHL Draft via trade with the San Jose Sharks in exchange for New Jersey's first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft (conditional), defensemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Nikita Okhotiuk, forwards Andreas Johnsson and Fabian Zetterlund, a conditional second-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft and a seventh-round selection in 2024. Meier has recorded 31 goals and 21 assists to total 52 points in 57 games with the Sharks this season.

NHL trade grades: Devils make a big splash with Timo Meier trade (The Athletic)

If this isn't a perfect deal for the Devils, we'd like to see one.

[one of the top prospect](https://theathletic.com/4150519/2023/02/07/nhl-prospect-trade-board/) trade chips by me a few weeks ago and the [68th-ranked](https://theathletic.com/4046339/2023/01/17/nhl-players-prospects-ranking-young/) under-23 player in January. He’s been out most of the season, but he played a few games for the Sharks in 2021-22. I think it’s likely the Sharks got two or three NHL players with long careers heading and Mukhamdullin has a solid chance to have an impactful career. Meier elevates one of the NHL’s best offenses in New Jersey and gives either Jack Hughes or Nico Hischier a true star linemate. He’s an excellent skater with a great compete level and has a ton of pace, energy and physicality in his game. For the Devils, he’s more of a 5-7D who provides veteran depth at the position. From an on-ice perspective, the only issue is whether he’s the right wing on a line with [Jack Hughes](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/jack-hughes-yvxR1X9SJYkHGEoL/) or [Nico Hischier](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/nico-hischier-YN1EPyFaE4YBBD5C/). They gave up presumably low first-rounders, none of their most valuable assets and got the cap relief necessary to make the best player on the market fit, and they outbid their direct competition. The package Mike Grier wound up accepting is headlined by three main pieces: the first-round picks (one protected) and Mukhamadullin, a toolsy first-round defenseman in 2020. Corey Masisak, who covers the Sharks and previously covered the Devils, compared him to [Logan Couture](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/logan-couture-yl9o1AFYyJRjG3Zm/) on “The Athletic Hockey Show,” saying that he had high 1C potential and is playing wing because slotting him as a 3C seems wasteful. And to be clear, this felt like it’d be the outcome for weeks. They didn’t just get the best player on the market, they got one that fills a need, in the short- and long-term, and checks nearly every box on the assessment sheet.
