Sources - Padres, Manny Machado finalizing $350M extension (ESPN)

The Padres are finalizing an 11-year, $350 million extension with star third baseman Manny Machado, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

San Diego has since turned into a powerhouse, and it hopes to catch the [Los Angeles Dodgers](/mlb/team/_/name/lad/los-angeles-dodgers) for NL West supremacy this year after beating them in the division series in 2022. Machado debuted with Baltimore just after his 20th birthday and grew into a perennial top-five MVP candidate by his fourth season, when he hit .286/.359/.502 with 35 home runs, one of six 30-homer-plus seasons. Like Bogaerts and Darvish, Machado will be signed into his 40s once the deal is completed, and it would take him well past two decades in the big leagues. The Padres didn't let the failed negotiations the first time around deter them, bumping their offer by more than $50 million as owner Peter Seidler called extending Machado "my top priority" this spring. The Padres, sources told ESPN's Alden Gonzalez, had offered Machado a five-year, $105 million extension on top of the six years and $180 million he's owed, including this season. Machado was seeking significantly more than the $25.45 million a year Bogaerts received and said he planned to opt out. The The franchise cornerstone of an ascendant franchise, Machado is coming off arguably the best season of his career, hitting .298/.366/.531 with 32 home runs and 102 RBIs. Machado, 30, said last week he intended to opt out of the final five years (and $150 million) of his current contract with the Padres following the season after preliminary negotiations on an extension broke down. With more than $600 million owed to Tatis and Bogaerts, nine-figure extensions for right-handers 16 deadline to reach a new deal, conversations continued between Machado's agent, Dan Lozano of MVP Sports, and Padres general manager A.J.

He has not won a World Series, despite reaching the Championship Series round in all three of his stops -- Baltimore, Los Angeles and San Diego. [AJ Cassavell](mailto:[email protected]) covers the Padres for MLB.com. [Nelson Cruz](https://www.mlb.com/player/443558) last month, Machado has expressed multiple times that he hopes to emulate Cruz’s longevity. In the past 12 months, the Padres have also extended deals with starting pitchers [Joe Musgrove](https://www.mlb.com/player/605397) and [Yu Darvish](https://www.mlb.com/player/506433). They brought Soto and closer [Josh Hader](https://www.mlb.com/player/623352) on board via trade. He’s the owner of 283 homers and 1,597 career hits -- more than halfway to two of baseball’s most storied milestones. At the center of it is Machado, the unquestioned leader and de facto captain. The deal turned plenty of heads, with the Padres at that time amid a playoff drought that spanned more than a dozen years. This past offseason, he informed the Padres of his plan to opt out unless the two sides could agree on an extension. Machado, who promptly pointed to the interlocking ‘SD,’ has been the centerpiece of the Padres' turnaround from also-ran to perennial World Series contender. All along, both sides were hopeful a deal would get done before the start of the season -- perhaps the most highly anticipated season in franchise history. The team has not confirmed the deal, which includes a full no-trade clause and no opt-outs, per a source.

They have now secured one of the best third basemen in baseball for the rest of his career. Machado had made $108 million of that deal and was set to make $32 million this season, but now he's secured this extension that'll likely keep him in San Diego for the rest of his career. Machado had initially signed a 10-year, $300 million deal with the Padres prior to the 2019 season, but there was an opt-out on his deal after this coming season. It was arguably the best year of his career, a career that is trending toward having a Hall of Fame resume. It was the fourth time he's finished in the top five of MVP voting while also being his highest finish. Yu Darvish recently signed a six-year, $108 million extension that takes him through 2028.

Padres, Manny Machado Finalizing Extension (MLB Trade Rumors)

Manny Machado isn't going anywhere. The Padres star third baseman was planning to opt out of his contract after his year but will instead stick around, ...

[Bob Nightengale of USA Today](https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/1629862972817563648) first reported that the deal begins in 2023. Dennis Lin and Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic first reported that there are no opt-outs and that Machado has full no-trade protection ( [links](https://twitter.com/dennistlin/status/1629865273741434881)). [Jeff Passan of ESPN](https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/1629860613697732613) first reported that the sides were finalizing a new 11-year deal worth $350MM. For the any clubs that had hopes of making a run at Machado next winter, they will have to come up with other plans for next winter. Since Machado was going to have five years and $150MM remaining on his deal at the end of this year, taking the opt-out was the clear choice from a financial perspective and Machado was [quite open](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/02/manny-machado-planning-to-exercise-opt-out-following-2023-season.html) about his plans to take that path. [reporting](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/02/padres-remain-narrowly-below-273mm-third-cbt-threshold-after-wacha-deal.html) indicated that the club was narrowly below that line but it’s possible this deal might nudge them over for now. With the deadline having passed, it seemed possible that the season would begin with the uncertainty lingering, though [reports](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/02/padres-manny-machado-still-discussing-extension.html) on Friday indicated that the discussions were continuing. The exact breakdown of Machado’s deal isn’t yet known, but these hefty and lengthy deals mean that the club will have something in the vicinity of $100MM on the books for 2028 already. That increased spending has launched the club into luxury tax territory, having paid the competitive balance tax in each of the past two seasons. [reported](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/02/padres-expected-to-pursue-extension-with-manny-machado.html) earlier this month that the Padres were planning to get an extension done with Machado to prevent him from opting out, though the talks seemed to be in jeopardy as recently as a week ago. Since Machado had six years and $180MM remaining on his previous deal, this new agreement will add five years and $170MM in new money for the MVP Sports Group client. The star third baseman was planning to opt out of his contract after the season but will instead stick around, as Machado and the Padres are reportedly finalizing a new 11-year, $350MM contract.

Manny Machado and the free-spending Padres agree to 11-year ... (The Washington Post)

San Diego upped the ante yet again, agreeing to a $350 million deal with their all-star third baseman in another attention-grabbing move.

By signing Machado, the Padres have eliminated the only question hanging over what might become one of the more scrutinized small-market seasons in recent baseball history. But the Dodgers did not make their usual list of blockbuster acquisitions this offseason, turning the spotlight, for once, a little further south. He finished fourth in the National League in batting average and hit 32 home runs in 2022, his age-29 season. Machado’s deal gives the Padres another mega contract on their small-market books in yet another example of owner Peter Seidler’s willingness to spend. Machado becomes the highest-paid third baseman in major league history and will make $32 million annually, just less than what Arenado is earning on his current deal. As Machado put it, noting the free agent market has changed in the three years since he signed, “There’s a lot of money out there.”
