Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes took down the 2nd-ranked Indiana Hoosiers (26-2) by a score of 86-85. The game had everything. Two of the best players in women's ...
The Hawkeyes won the B1G tourney last year, and it will be a tremendous opportunity for the Hawks to improve their NCAA seeding. For the Hawkeyes Caitlin Clark had 34 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists. Another day at the office for the National Player of the Year. The Hawkeyes faced the Badgers twice this year (both blowouts) and Purdue once (a 15 point win). Luckily the Hawkeyes had the last possession. In the end, Holmes and Clark both made plays. There were terrible fouls called and missed for both teams; fans of both men’s and women’s B1G basketball have grown accustomed to the inconsistency. The Hoosiers shot better from the free throw line; the Hawks were better from three. The assists, steals, turnovers, and fouls were almost identical. The Hoosiers had the lead when the horn sounded... however, the ball was intent on finding its mark and making the Hawks winners as it rattled through the rim. It was a back-and-forth affair, the Hawkeyes led 40-39 at halftime.
"We're writing our story, and this team is amazing," Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said after her team beat No. 2 Indiana on Sunday.
[Purdue](https://theathletic.com/womens-college-basketball/team/purdue-boilermakers/) last week. “I feel really lucky to play through arguably the most influential time in women’s basketball,” said Czinano, who joined Warnock in playing their final regular-season game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. At Nebraska last week, more than 1,000 Hawkeyes and Huskers fans gathered for more than 45 minutes after the game for photos and autographs. “I’m all about growing the women’s game, and I’m glad I gave something little girls can probably scream about at the top of their lungs,” said Clark, who scored 34 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished nine assists against Indiana. In a building that witnessed an epic comeback by the men’s basketball team Saturday and thousands of ear-splitting moments on the wrestling mat, nothing could match the outburst when the ball rattled inside the rim and fell through the net. Clark, a 6-foot junior shooting guard, has become part of the attraction, with Big Ten venues picking up nearly 4,000 more fans than the average when she competes against the home team. Vivian Stringer in December for the most wins by a Big Ten women’s basketball coach, clenched her fists but remained seated after Clark’s shot. In a game that featured nine different lead changes, the crowd of 15,046 never went silent. and cheered so loudly that the speakers were inaudible at times. “That was just an unbelievable game for women’s basketball,” Iowa women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder said. But as much as the Hawkeyes secured the buzzer-beating win against the Big Ten champion Hoosiers, this victory embodies more than just the outcome. Arguably the best player in America made one of the greatest shots in league history.
Sunday afternoon, Indiana women's basketball dropped its second game of the season to Iowa in a nail biter between the conference's two best teams.
Caitlin Clark's bucket at the horn lifted Iowa to a huge win over Indiana on an epic day of women's basketball.
The Hawkeyes are "writing their own story" as Bluder has mentioned several times this season — and this was a momentum-gaining chance Iowa didn't want to pass up. Then Clark swooped in to save the day. Iowa's best carried the Hawkeyes to leads of nine in the third quarter and six twice in the fourth, seemingly ready to finally shake free and let the sold-out arena carry the Hawkeyes to the finish line. Sunday's opportunity provided the perfect chance, even with a daunting Hoosiers squad and their near-perfect record on the other side. However, a key clock adjustment before the Holmes free throws gave Iowa 1.5 seconds to work with instead of the original 0.8 that showed. Friday as the Big Ten Tournament's second seed. Bluder stressed to her players the Maryland loss was an anomaly, and not the start of something sour with the season's most vital point up ahead. "I know this team is going to turn to me in those situations,” Clark said, “and it's not anything I'm going to shy away from. ESPN's "College GameDay," senior day — all of it ultimately took a backseat to two powerhouses hoping for one more magical moment before the postseason commences. It took the fearless confidence she wields to drill the game-winner after missing eight of her first 11 downtown attempts. Holmes calmly swished two free throws to give Indiana (26-2, 16-2) an 85-83 advantage as a feisty crowd channeled all its anger at a questionable whistle. Clark took off on a celebratory sprint as a raucous Carver-Hawkeye Arena soaked up this magical 86-85 Iowa win.

Warnock considered returning to the Hawkeyes for a fifth season, but she said applying to dental school was a daunting process. Both Warnock and Czinano have been in the middle of a three-year reign of dominance for the Hawkeyes. “I have six more years of school left, and unfortunately, it’s not something I can do while playing basketball,” Warnock said. In 2021-22, the Hawkeyes were both conference regular season and tournament champions, clinching a hosting spot in the NCAA Tournament as a No. “I guess it’s a lot of emotions, but I’m excited, you know, it’s a great opportunity,” Warnock said of her final regular season game at Carver on Friday. Whether it’s rebounding, whether it’s hitting that key three, whether it’s guarding anybody on the floor, she’s done it all for us.”
The Indiana Hoosiers are Big Ten regular-season champions. The Iowa Hawkeyes have the nation's most dynamic player in Caitlin Clark.
Kate Martin has 8 points and Caitlin Clark 8, with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Mackenzie Holmes has 7 and Grace Berger 6 for IU. Berger has 14 points and Holmes 12. Iowa's Kate Martin has 19 points and 4 fouls. Yarden Garzon has 7 points and 14 rebounds. She has 14 points, as do Mackenzie Holmes and Chloe Moore-McNeil. Clark scores in the closing seconds to provide Iowa's 1-point edge. Her 3-pointer to take the lead bounces off. Grace Berger has 16. That's just IU's third made 3 of the game. Grace Berger and Mackenzie Holmes are scoreless for almost 8 minutes in the quarter. The Hawkeyes (22-6, 14-3) are in second place in conference play and are led by one of the nation's most dynamic players, Caitlin Clark.
A buzzer-beating win over the nation's No. 2 team capped a day in which the Iowa women said hello to America on ESPN.
“Being able to get GameDay, being able to have sold-out crowds, and people talking about women’s basketball around the state, and people being excited about women’s basketball around the state. Clark isn’t just the National Player of the Year in women’s basketball. [Mike Hlas](https://www.thegazette.com/mike-hlas/) [Iowa Basketball](https://www.thegazette.com/iowa-basketball/) Feb. “I remember in practice not setting it great and (Clark) not getting the shot,” Czinano said. Because she has been so effective at scoring in the post, opponents haven’t been able to overplay Clark as much as they’d like. I told her during the huddle, ‘Really wait for it, let me come get there.’ It just kind of worked out perfectly.” She and McKenna Warnock were feted in the Senior Day ceremony after the game. They have been two vital factors in the mass quantity of winning Lisa Bluder’s program has done the last few years. That was the opening Clark needed. “Honestly, I thought it was money,” Clark told ESPN’s Holly Rowe immediately after the game. Clark had stamped her name into the national sports consciousness before Sunday. The shot Clark took?
Indiana received a #1 vote in last week's AP poll and are all but a lock to be a 1-seed in the NCAA tournament. A win here likely cements their postseason floor ...
A win today would move Iowa up to second place in the Big Ten, while a loss would keep them as the 3-seed in the conference tournament. ESPN currently has them as a March Madness 3-seed, but a win here likely moves them up to the 2-line in that regard as well. Indiana received a #1 vote in last week’s AP poll and are all but a lock to be a 1-seed in the NCAA tournament. #6 Iowa (22-6, 14-3 Big Ten) could’ve had an opportunity to win a share of the Big Ten title in this game, but squandered said chance with a 96-68 road loss to #7 Maryland last Tuesday. National Player of the Year candidate Caitlin Clark scored 18 for Iowa but was largely held in check, logo three bricks are a lot less funny when you’re down double digits. The Hoosiers clinched at least a share of their first crown since 1983 with an 83-60 Senior Day victory over Purdue last Sunday, and then locked up the title outright when #7 Maryland beat #6 Iowa midweek.
The No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers dug themselves an early hole but led in the closing seconds until Caitlin Clark hit the winner as the buzzer sounded.
Caitlin Clark won it for the Hawkeyes on a buzzer beater three that was just nuts. She'll get the clicks online she deserves for that one, but the Big Ten ...
Although they finished in the middle of the pack, both UNL and MSU gave Indiana a ton of trouble during the regular season. As frustrating as this loss was, it doesn’t mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. I’m curious to see if Teri Moren will switch up the strategy if the Hoosiers find themselves in a similar situation in the postseason. She turned Czinano into BBQ chicken in 1v1 situations and drew a huge foul (not a travel btw) when the game was tied at 83 with 1.5 seconds remaining. She fouled out in the first matchup between these two teams, opening the door for Indiana to takeover in the paint. National Player of the Year candidate Mackenzie Holmes came alive in the fourth, finishing the game with 21 points and scoring seven of IU’s last nine points. The Big Ten Champions have got a ton of fight in them, I can tell you that much. The Hoosiers are 1-5 against the Hawkeyes since I started on the beat and I usually begin to lose sleep two or three nights prior to a game between the two. Aside from Clark, the Hawkeyes got a great effort from Kate Martin who was recognized during Iowa’s Senior Day ceremony prior to the game. Caitlin Clark won it for the Hawkeyes on a buzzer beater three that was just nuts. Caitlin Clark is probably the biggest villain I’ve encountered during my time at IU, and she was on this afternoon. Indiana women’s basketball dropped an absolute banger of a game to the Iowa Hawkeyes earlier this afternoon, losing 86-85 in Iowa City.
