Spring Training day 1 recap: Phillies split games between Yankees ... (Philly Sports Network)

For the first time since Game 6 of the World Series, the Philadelphia Phillies have returned to baseball action.

[Kody Clemens](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/clemeko01.shtml), who the Phillies got from the Tigers in the [Gregory Soto](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sotogr01.shtml) trade, who went 1-2 with a single. Marsh lead off the game with a single to left and would follow that up with another single to left in the second inning. De La Cruz would rip a ball to deep right-center, giving the Phillies a 7-4 lead. [Scott Kingery](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kingesc01.shtml) went 0-1 with a walk. Both were productive at the plate and in the field. He high-stepped into the second base like Deion Sanders, which got a great reaction from the broadcasters and fans. He made the most of his opportunity today. Plassmeyer had a cup of coffee with the Phillies last season but has the chance to be an important depth piece in AAA this season. Casty went 0-3 with 2 strikeouts in his first action of the season. The Phillies opened their Grapefruit season with a split-squad scrimmage in games against the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers. If you had never heard of the 28-year-old outfielder, it’s okay, I haven’t either. The former All-Star is looking to bounce back after a weak 2022 season by his standards, but today wasn’t necessarily the best new beginning.

What we learned from the Phillies' spring training opener (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Weston Wilson drove in four runs in the 7-4 win, and manager Rob Thomson said winning pitcher Andrew Baker was "excellent."

Wilson, who played in right field for the Phillies on Saturday went 2-for-2 with four RBIs, a walk, and a home run. The game will be streamed on WIP and televised on On the mound: Nick Nelson made a scoreless one-inning start for the Phillies, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout. “I was in the windup, and we banged the whole windup last year and went to stretch, because that’s the simplest delivery,” Baker said. He’s a name to keep an eye on this spring, as the Phillies have an open spot in their bullpen, and fits the profile of optinonable depth the Phillies say they’re looking for. It took me about til midway last year for it to finally click, and when it did, it just went up from there.”

'Whip it like an axe': What it's like to spend a day at the batting cage ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Darick Hall said listening to Manuel about his swing is "kind of like when you actually listen to your parents."

Hall says he is the type of hitter who needs to learn things on his own. But then last year, he realized that golfers don’t scoop the ball; they swing down on it. But over the years, he thought more about Manuel’s words and came to a realization. He compared his swing to how a golf swing looks on TV. “You got to keep your top hand loose and whip it like an axe,” Manuel said, swinging the bat down as he talked. “That’s what the good hitters do,” Hall said. Hall was trying to scoop the ball up and ended up with a lot of top spin as a result. Playing their first game under MLB’s new rule changes, the Phillies committed no violations. “Last year, 37.” It’s kind of like when you actually listen to your parents.” He took a few swings as Charlie Manuel, leaning against the batting cage as he often does, looked on. Back then, he was all about launch angle and swinging up.

I’m always going to remember that.” He wanted to make sure this was clear to Vierling and Maton: “We miss the guys,” Schwarber said. “The young guys developed that culture over there. “Matty is just one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet,” Schwarber said. “I’m glad we did it because we’re going through this together,” Vierling said. "That's the display of throwing strikes, and that was good to see, especially as his first outing." A big credit to the target being good." "I had (the pitch clock) for two months in Triple-A last year," Hill said. The best pitcher out of the bullpen was Rule 5 draft pick Mason Englert, a right-hander from the Texas Rangers. In the first inning, Hill struck out former Tiger Nick Castellanos with a nasty down-and-away slider. "I just started working on that specific gyro slider two days ago in my bullpen," Hill said. The 24-year-old seems likely to play an everyday role in Triple-A Toledo at the beginning of the regular season. He was responsible for a single, a wild pitch, a hit-by-pitch, a double and a walk, along with a pitch clock violation that handed out a free ball. "The first thing you notice is the dead time in between at-bats, or in between pitches, goes away." Parker will have something on Austin now for a while." "I can't imagine what that feels like for a family member to do that with their parents in the stands. "That's a quick game, with a clock or without a clock," manager A.J.

Turner hits ground running in Phillies debut (MLB.com)

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Nick Castellanos swore the idea to move closer to the plate and further up in the batter's box came Sunday morning at BayCare Ballpark, ...

The rest of the projected Opening Day lineup is not expected to be together for a while, too. “[Long] asked me, ‘How many times do you feel a fastball in the zone has been blown by you?’” Castellanos said. “Just to get that slider a little bit higher,” he said, smiling. I’m not too happy about it, but I think it’s something I need to do and conceded with the training staff [to do]. Rhys Hoskins has not played this spring as he works his way back from a meniscectomy on his right knee in December, though he could play as early as Friday. He wasn’t happy for a lot of reasons. “I despise them,” Turner said. Before they could get comfortable in their seats, he singled, donned sliding mitts and started to run. Trea Turner makes his Phillies debut in the leadoff spot (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

The offseason acquisition has switched to a Phillies uniform, but it doesn't look like he's missed a beat in his hitting routine.

Playing in the National League East, he used to talk to J.T. Realmuto in the box, and Rhys Hoskins at first base. — On Sunday afternoon, shortstop Trea Turner stepped up to the plate, in his first at-bat as a Phillie and his first at-bat as the Phillies’ leadoff man. In the second inning, he hit another line-drive single, this time to left field, to drive in minor league third baseman Jim Haley. Big league players and minor league players lined up shoulder to shoulder on the railing, trying to make space so they could all see the show. When Turner signed an 11-year, $300 million contract with the Phillies in December, he signed with an organization that featured plenty of familiar faces: his former hitting coach Kevin Long, former Nationals teammates in Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and even Howie Kendrick, who now works in the Phillies’ front office.
