There’s a chance that, eventually, he’ll want out of his next situation, too. It’s not because his current deal has a bunch of phony-baloney, expensive, back-end balloon payments. The full contract had an average of $20 million annually. There was talk before the 2022 season about Ramsey getting a new deal, but he still had four years left at the time. The problem likely is that he’s angling for a new contract. He has three years left on the five-year extension he signed in 2020.

Having said that, the Jaguars don’t have the cap space to fit Ramsey in and they may not be inclined to part ways with draft picks to land him. Maybe if the Jacksonville Jaguars had the cap space and didn’t have to give up draft picks, acquiring Ramsey would make sense but that’s not the case. Simply, this is a different team from the one Ramsey left. He wanted to get a contract extension in 2019 but the management at the time declined to engage in negotiations. Make no mistake, Jalen Ramsey can still play and would round out a cornerback group that includes Darious Williams and Tyson Campbell. After all, the former Florida State Seminole is still one of the top cornerbacks in the league, and even though he didn’t leave Jacksonville on the best possible terms, he stayed away from controversies throughout most of his tenure in Los Angeles.

Here are three possible trade packages the New England Patriots could leverage in a move for All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

The Rams probably won’t be in any position to compete this year. There isn’t a single player in the draft at that point that’ll be better than Ramsey. Perhaps they could land on a cheaper option in free agency, but it would be a huge risk for the team, following a year where the offense clearly struggled. Ramsey isn’t coming off one of his best seasons, but he’s still one of the very best in the game at his position. The Patriots already have a few things working in their favor. But what will it take to get him from the Rams?

The price would have to be right in terms of trade compensation. The Raiders have a boatload of cap space, sitting third in the league in dollars to spend. And with QB Tua Tagovailoa still on his rookie contract, the team is loading up to make a run. Xavien Howard, injured for most of the year, didn’t look like himself in 2022. Suffice it to say Vikings could use some help on the boundary, and Ramsey could provide it. Patrick Peterson saw a renaissance of sorts in Minnesota last season, but he’s set to be a free agent. He landed middle of the pack in both passer rating allowed and completion rate allowed. But the entire Rams team fell off a bit last year, in large part due to injuries sustained all over the roster. The Lions badly need some reinforcements in the secondary, and pairing Ramsey with former third overall pick Jeff Okudah would be a terrific start to an offseason in which they hope to catapult themselves squarely into playoff contention. But if we’re being realistic, that’s most teams in the NFL, as CB is one of the most difficult positions at which to find year-over-year consistently high-end play. I’m not saying the Lions are among the top Super Bowl contenders in 2023, but add a few more pieces, especially on defense, and Detroit could be downright dangerous.
