Iowa men's basketball rallies vs. Michigan State for one of program's ... (Hawk Central)

Payton Sandfort's six 3-pointers sparked an improbable Hawkeye comeback which ended in a 112-106 win over Michigan State.

"He was disappointed he missed (in Iowa's last game at Michigan State) but you kind of felt like 'Okay, if he gets a shot again, he's going to make it.' That's how I feel about him." Within the Big Ten, Iowa improves to 10-8 in conference play. "We lost two in a row, but now we win this one and it allows us to go into the next one with that boosting thinking we're going to win. After two bad misses, Connor McCaffery connected on a 3-pointer at the 14:47 mark of the first half to give Iowa a 15-12 advantage. At the break, the Hawkeyes were at 38% (their home average this season is 36%) but the comfort of playing at home sunk in even more for the second half, where Iowa shot 55%. "The whole time I kept thinking about the game a few years ago, I think I was a sophomore in high school and I watched (former Iowa player Jordan Bohannon) hit that 3 against Northwestern, it felt really similar to that. And I was thinking about that during the game. "At some point, you got to make a play," Fran McCaffery said. They were really connected: In every huddle, in every timeout and on the floor. The Hawkeyes fought their way back in regulation behind a flurry of 3-pointers by several different players: Murray, Connor McCaffery, Patrick McCaffery and Sandfort. "I'm not going to lie, I thought the game was over," said junior guard Tony Perkins. Coach Fran McCaffery received a technical foul at the 2:03 mark and the ensuing free throws gave Michigan State an 89-76 lead.

He made the first five free throws in that stretch, but missed the sixth. This may read like fiction, but here goes: Iowa made 3-pointers with 39, 32, 21, 10 and 3.3 seconds left in the second half.

Iowa authored an all-time comeback versus Michigan State, rallying to top the Spartans, 112-106. Here's the best social media reactions.

Go Hawks but that was not enjoyable. I’m positive that was a waste of my time today. [February 25, 2023] One of the best performances I've seen in this arena in quite some time. Fans now rushing to the exits with MSU leading 86-76 with 2:10 remaining. From pure destitution at the seemingly lost season to pure elation at what quickly became a “where were you when this happened” moment. With some extremely hard work on the boards and a little bit of magic, Iowa stormed back and really saved their season. The Hawkeyes were down 93-81 with 1:23 left to play, and still down 96-86 with less than a minute remaining. Then everything changed, and it all started with a stare-down. The one really felt like the final blow on Iowa’s season. The Spartans shot out of their mind in this one, over 70% from beyond the arc. This game felt like such a guaranteed loss that you had fans filing their way out of Carver with basketball still left to be played.

Hauser hit MSU’s first three in that stretch before Akins buried the last two, the last of which fell through with 6 seconds left in the period, tying the game at 42. Rebraca scored 12 first-half points and led the Hawkeyes to a six-point lead as they took control in the early stages. Caitlin Clark's bucket at the horn lifted Iowa to a huge win over Indiana on an epic day of women's basketball.

Then Clark swooped in to save the day. Iowa's best carried the Hawkeyes to leads of nine in the third quarter and six twice in the fourth, seemingly ready to finally shake free and let the sold-out arena carry the Hawkeyes to the finish line. Sunday's opportunity provided the perfect chance, even with a daunting Hoosiers squad and their near-perfect record on the other side. However, a key clock adjustment before the Holmes free throws gave Iowa 1.5 seconds to work with instead of the original 0.8 that showed. Friday as the Big Ten Tournament's second seed. Bluder stressed to her players the Maryland loss was an anomaly, and not the start of something sour with the season's most vital point up ahead. "I know this team is going to turn to me in those situations,” Clark said, “and it's not anything I'm going to shy away from. ESPN's "College GameDay," senior day — all of it ultimately took a backseat to two powerhouses hoping for one more magical moment before the postseason commences. It took the fearless confidence she wields to drill the game-winner after missing eight of her first 11 downtown attempts. Holmes calmly swished two free throws to give Indiana (26-2, 16-2) an 85-83 advantage as a feisty crowd channeled all its anger at a questionable whistle. Clark took off on a celebratory sprint as a raucous Carver-Hawkeye Arena soaked up this magical 86-85 Iowa win.

Sunday's Indiana-Iowa women's game is transcendent (The Gazette)

ESPN knew what it was doing when it opted to hold College GameDay in Iowa City for the Iowa-Indiana women's basketball game Sunday.

Iowa is first in the nation in field goal percentage at .508, and Indiana is second at .502. It’s a prelude to this week’s Big Ten tournament in Minneapolis that could be the best in league history. Iowa has the marquee name in Caitlin Clark, and that has made an enormous difference in national-television appearances and ticket sales. The Hoosiers are No. 7 Maryland, which could go deeper in the NCAA tournament than anyone else in the league. The Hawkeyes have had three home crowds over 13,000 this season, but this game is a seller’s market. The Hoosiers had their first sellout ever a week ago when 17,222 filled Assembly Hall for their win over Purdue. The quality of women’s basketball in the Big Ten has continued to shoot upward. The Hoosiers averaged 4,725 fans last season, 7,361 this one. This is the first time it has come to Iowa City. The crowd will lift Iowa’s season average to 10,705, topping the Big Ten record Wisconsin has held for 25 years. The Hoosiers are quite the story, a great shooting, great defending team on a 14-game winning streak.
