The Perils Of Micromanagement: Re-Evaluating Jimmy Carter's ... (Forbes)

[projecting a sense of distrust](https://hbr.org/2015/08/how-to-stop-micromanaging-your-team), frustrating the working group’s capacity to improve. He serves as a role model for the social and cultural difference that former presidents can make. And, self-admittedly, his legacy provides a reminder that as to leadership, the virtues of rectitude and principle do not effortlessly convert to those of efficiency and effectiveness. Micromanagement is more often grounded in a leader’s lack of confidence - whether in himself or others - rather than a lack of good faith. As absurd as these behaviors may seem, they were reflective of an admirable desire to be involved at each step of the decision-making process, and to be familiar with all of the details of each issue on his desk. Carter’s immersion in the wording of legislative proposals ultimately diminished his ability to project on broader issues of purpose and vision. His commitment to mastering details frustrated his ability to prioritize matters on the administration’s agenda. This was not a byproduct of arrogance or hubris, but rather of his personal experiences and level of commitment. This change could certainly incentivize leaders to engage much more closely with their working teams. His unwillingness to delegate authority to his cabinet members created dissention and frustrated administrative progress. That was the way he had successfully run his peanut business in Plains, and it was a practice he expected to work in Washington, D.C. These are deserving of respect.

As former President Jimmy Carter remains in hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, many people are considering his impact.

He denounced the Iraq war as "based upon lies." Altogether, he participated in 39 of the center’s 100 election observation trips. He began the Carter Center which, he said later, offered "superior opportunities to do good." He went to Cuba in 2002, met with Fidel Castro, then delivered a televised speech calling for an end to the U.S. A Democratic moderate with a New South image, Carter was elected governor of Georgia in 1970, succeeding segregationist Lester Maddox and gaining his first national note when he declared in his inauguration address "the time for racial discrimination is over." Naval Academy in 1946, the year he married Rosalynn Smith, also of Plains. In the aftermath of Watergate, Carter was the anti-Richard Nixon figure. The father for whom he was named was in the peanut business, with a farm and warehouse. Carter tried to negotiate, and when that didn't work, he ordered the military rescue attempt that failed disastrously in the desert in April 1980. Jimmy Carter, the only president inaugurated by nickname, was born in tiny Plains, Georgia, where he arranged to be buried. Then, in 1982, he organized the Kennedy challenged him in the Democratic primaries.

It's about time he was recognized for the heroic and transformational leadership he provided." Jacobs noted that Carter led the transformation from mechanical weapons systems to a modern era of cruise missiles and stealth technology, immeasurably strengthening the military, to the dismay of a post-Vietnam War Democratic Party. He was mocked for wearing a sweater and urging Americans to turn down the thermostat. "Carter was building strong power, but also recognized the potency of soft powers and how integral it was to this country's values," Jacobs said. He launched the judicial career of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, appointing the civil-rights attorney to the U.S. Minnesotans have long had a unique connection to Carter: The Georgian selected Minnesota's Walter Mondale as his running mate. From the beginning, he was a study in contrasts. He attempted to launch the nation's first alternative-energy program and successfully pushed through Superfund legislation to clean abandoned toxic waste dumps. As a farmer, he was accustomed to hard work and long hours. For the most part, Carter's single term in office was deemed a failure. He pushed through the first subsidies for wind and solar. Since leaving office in 1981, his life has been one of extraordinary public service and good works, large and small.

Jimmy Carter: Faith in Action (The Wild Hunt)

We simply must have faith in each other, faith in our ability to govern ourselves, and faith in the future of this nation. Make sure to click the bell, too, to be notified of new articles posted to our subreddit. I think of God as an omnipotent and omniscient presence, a spirit that permeates the universe, the essence of truth, nature, being, and life. There’s much to love in Carter’s words – and many points of intersection with Pagan approaches to living in the world. Jimmy Carter has long been all of this and more. The old Icelanders tell us that half the war-dead go to Odin, the other half to Freyja. Our people are losing that faith, not only in government itself but in the ability as citizens to serve as the ultimate rulers and shapers of our democracy. If we want change to happen, we must be the ones to manifest the change. First of all, we must face the truth, and then we can change our course. But just as we are losing our confidence in the future, we are also beginning to close the door on our past. Restoring that faith and that confidence to America is now the most important task we face. My faith demands – this is not optional – my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference.

That’s a demonstration of the kind of character we need but seldom see in our leaders. and then witnessing the subsequent Iranian Revolution, Carter was then bedeviled by the actions of the new regime, which took 66 Americans hostage in November 1979. Nonetheless, negotiations for the release of the hostages continued throughout his term of office. However, as years have passed, it has become clearer and clearer that he saw the truth and had the courage to articulate it regardless of the impact it might have on his popularity. The Carter administration also deserves credit and recognition for overseeing the smooth handover of the Panama Canal to the nation of Panama, an important landmark in U.S. Inheriting a country that was being buffeted by an OPEC oil squeeze and energy company profiteering, Carter sought to promote energy independence, actively embraced conservation (though ridiculed for it by the likes of Reagan who made a show of removing solar panels Carter had placed on the roof of the White House) and put into place a windfall profits tax on oil companies. Reagan, the author of both the politics and economics of American division, disengaged as president, and in many ways unfit for the office, was beatified by the right wing press, even as his administration was rocked by scandal and associated with policies that exacerbated inequality from coast-to-coast. Following the advice of his foreign policy team to let the Shah of Iran into the U.S. It is commonplace to suggest that his presidency was a footnote to history, one perhaps most notable because it ushered in the “greatness” of the Reagan Era. Reagan is often seen as the president who initiated the tough policies that brought down the Soviet Union. Carter, of course, won the Nobel Prize for his work as the driving force behind the Camp David Peace Accords between Anwar Sadat’s Egypt and Menachem Begin’s Israel. Indeed, even out of office, Carter proved both more visionary and far more principled and courageous on world affairs than most of his successors were.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has had an outsized impact on Georgia's natural resources, from encouraging solar power to protecting state rivers.

In 1975, Carter signed the State Heritage Preserve Act into law and Ossabaw was the first acquisition of the Georgia Heritage Trust. With the same Heritage Trust program, in the Atlanta area, Foster said Carter also added acreage to the land set aside for Pineola Mountain State Conservation Park, a space just east of Atlanta the Georgia Conservancy played an active role in protecting. In 1972, Carter founded the Georgia Heritage Trust which was key to identifying locations throughout the state in need of conservation. "If you know anything about the environmental movement, the late 1960s was the firestorm hot and every organization you could think of that as environmental impact right now (in Georgia) was founded," said Foster. [Ossabaw Island Foundation](https://ossabawisland.org/), the late Mrs. Brian Foster, communications director for the Georgia Conservancy, said Carter's background as a child in Plains, growing up outdoors helped form a lifelong environmental ethic he carried with him throughout his time in government and beyond. He said that beyond founding the U.S. A picture of Jimmy Carter is making the rounds online. Solar panels in the 1970s aren't like their modern descendants.
