Lakers suddenly have a deep roster to pick up the slack when the ... (The Athletic)

As LeBron James and Anthony Davis had down nights, Malik Beasley and the bench stepped up to lead the Lakers to a decisive win.

Ham clarified in his pregame news conference that the plan is for James, Davis and the rest of the group to play every game the rest of the way — including back-to-backs. [Memphis](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/grizzlies/) (35-23) and [Oklahoma City](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/thunder/) (28-30). It appears, however, that the Lakers’ plan is to get James and Davis to play as many of the remaining 22 games as possible. He doesn’t want the Lakers to get ahead of themselves and overlook an opponent or lose because they’re unprepared, sabotaging the recent progress they’ve made as a group. Davis believes resting in blowout wins is “very huge” and will allow him and James to shoulder a larger burden later in the season — i.e. “We have guys in that second unit that have been in the starting lineup, and played starter’s minutes, and closed games for us, and had big moments in big games. This season, they were 0-2 in the two games James had scored fewer than 20 points and 2-5 in the seven games Davis failed to reach that threshold. The Lakers led by at least 20 points for much of the fourth quarter. [D’Angelo Russell](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/dangelo-russell-T78UXpDn5eShWlwg/), [LA](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/clippers/)’s third option, played just nine minutes before spraining his right ankle in the first quarter. [Anthony Davis](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/anthony-davis-YhDofdcmUKoYKV18/) only scored 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting while being contained by [Draymond Green](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/draymond-green-qWchQbJAR0YQNMyV/), [Kevon Looney](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/kevon-looney-uZPgrCxwsC4SkmF8/) and the Warriors’ stellar help defense. But this isn’t the previous iteration of the Lakers. “It’s 23 of the most important games of my career — for a regular season,” James told reporters Sunday.

Jakob Poeltl added 21 points and a career-best 18 rebounds for the Raptors, who have won three in a row. Jaylen Brown added 30 points and 11 rebounds, and Malcolm Brogdon came off the bench to score 24 points in his first game in Indiana since the Pacers traded him to the Celtics in the offseason. Indiana point guard Tyrese Haliburton finished with 22 points and 14 assists, but missed a long 3-point attempt at the end of regulation with the teams tied 125-125. 6, and the Mavs lost the prior two contests. Banchero finished with 11 points, almost nine fewer than his team-leading season average, on 4-of-13 shooting from the floor. The 11 players who suited up for the Trail Blazers didn’t appear to be bothered by the nuisance early in the game, as Portland blasted out to 11-2, 19-4 and 27-11 leads en route to a 37-29 advantage through 12 minutes. Despite missing the morning shootaround due to a non-COVID illness, Embiid finished with 27 points, 19 rebounds, six assists and six blocked shots. Ja Morant scored 15 on 3-of-16 shooting, Dillon Brooks had 11 points and Xavier Tillman swept 12 rebounds. Jordan Clarkson added 24 points for the Jazz. Golden State lost for the fourth time in its last five games and remained stuck on seven road victories, the lowest among postseason-eligible teams. Anthony Davis scored 12 points with 12 rebounds for Los Angeles. However, he missed a game-winning attempt at the OT buzzer.

Lakers: LeBron James' dreadful game vs. Warriors a welcome sight (ClutchPoints)

The Los Angeles Lakers blew out the Golden State Warriors despite LeBron James shooting 5-of-20 and Anthony Davis taking five shots.

“LeBron and AD didn’t get going as much as they wanted tonight, but we’re deep, and I think that’s the statement we want to make,” said Beasley. Suddenly, they’re plowing down Western Conference foes when the stars struggle. “Just a sniper, nonstop staying aggressive,” Ham said about Beasley. Same with Coach, he told me to shoot the ball, keep shooting. “It kind of reminds me of me and (Kentavious Caldwell-Pope) had that action where it’s single action and he’d come off shooting and you can’t go under. “So we have confidence in the entire roster.” Mo Bamba grabbed 13 boards and drained a couple of triples. But, he set a fresh mark for his fewest minutes of the season (26). Davis focused on defense and rebounding. Meanwhile, the depth, energy, and versatility of the Lakers’ revamped roster were on full display. Davis (13-of-17 FG) got his groove back and only played 30 minutes. [February 24, 2023]

Lakers guard D'Angelo Russell suffered a fluke ankle injury in the win over the Warriors, and while X-rays were negative he could miss a game or two.

[De'Anthony Melton](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/30617/deanthony-melton) led a defense that held All-Star [Ja Morant](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/51038/ja-morant) to 3-of-16 shooting on the night, and Embiid had 17 defensive rebounds and six blocks — none bigger than this one late. And Kessler is a lock for First Team All-Rookie. Memphis is a team on the cusp, but they need to clean up these areas. The other concern is their road record — they have lost eight straight away from the FedEx Forum and fell to 11-18 on the road. In front of a raucous crowd the 76ers played one of their best quarters of the season against a quality opponent, went on a 22-8 run, closing the game on a 10-1 run to pick up the win. Late-game offensive struggles are not new to this team and it’s something that could send them home early in the playoffs if not fixed. Despite his possible absence, the Lakers still have Dennis Schroder to replace him in any game Russell misses. He is still quite eager to prove himself on the team he loves the most since he was a kid. This is a positive report on the injury but doctors still asked for patience and want the player to take his recovery day-by-day. Malik Beasley Praises Lakers' Depth, Describes Energy ... (LakersNation.com)

Malik Beasley praises the Los Angeles Lakers depth around LeBron James and Anthony Davis and calls the team's energy 'immaculate'.

The most important thing this Lakers victory showed is that the team doesn’t have to be quite as reliant on LeBron James and Anthony Davis as they had been earlier in the year. The leadership of the Lakers’ stars to implore and encourage Beasley to shoot undoubtedly does wonders for his confidence which helps the team overall. “I know it’s coming so that’s what I’m prepared for every game, getting my footwork right and ready to shoot the ball, especially when there’s a closeout.” But we’re deep and I think that’s the statement we’re going to make. In fact, Beasley’s team-high 25 points equaled the combined total of LeBron and Davis while Reaves scored 11 of his 17 points in the third quarter to spark a run that would put the game away for good. Making the win more impressive was the fact that Anthony Davis and LeBron James struggled, yet it didn’t matter because of the performances of players such as Malik Beasley and Austin Reaves.
