Justin Holiday's 15-point debut makes it easy to see why Mavs got him (The Dallas Morning News)

Even before Justin Holiday's debut, Jason Kidd said he could envision the 6-6 swingman becoming a spot starter. Holiday's 15-point, two-steal debut only...

“Yes, we have Luka and Kyrie, but we have a lot of good players who know how to fit into different spots and are happy for one another. “This organization, from afar, has always wanted to do things the right way to win the championship, regardless of how good their team was or wasn’t,” he said. 9, joined the Rockets on the road but never made it to the city of Houston before his contract was bought out on Feb. “I don’t think it had anything to do with what I was capable of doing. Other teams were interested, so why did he choose to sign with Dallas? He was traded to Houston, along with Frank Kaminsky, on Feb. And defensively, I thought he did a really good job too.” He last played as a Hawk on Feb. “He’s been in the league. They are steadfastly team-first, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t proud of their abilities and accomplishments and aren’t entitled to politely ask questions. “I understand what they wanted to do,” Justin said. Get this: Coach Jason Kidd hinted before Thursday’s game that Holiday might become a spot-starter, depending on opponent matchups.

Luka Dončić-Kyrie Irving pairing finally produces a Mavericks win ... (The Athletic)

It's still the Dončić show in Dallas, but at last this season, he's no longer alone on stage as the sole leading man.

[Frank Ntilikina](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/frank-ntilikina-ED8ru3pDGnaPdwH9/) leaped [Jaden Hardy](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/jaden-hardy-qVOzeYX5dZEWtfyp/) in the rotation; this team’s problems aren’t scoring right now. [Reggie Bullock](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/reggie-bullock-ikD8UAkJCkf8mvyF/), [Josh Green](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/josh-green-tWFX9pjqC1g3ojtN/), [Tim Hardaway Jr.](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/tim-hardaway-jr-XTVgkXYgkNjL4k2I/) and Holiday will serve as a quartet of capable, if undersized, wings. [Dwight Powell](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/dwight-powell-BhTxjrEIUSrtsBS0/). But the 10-year veteran has converted 40.4 percent of his corner 3s for his career and has clearly arrived in a situation where he’s going to receive more of them than he ever received. But he has been the team’s most impactful defender for years now with his versatility and understanding on that end of the court. While the Mavericks outscored the [San Antonio Spurs](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/spurs/) by eight points during the 30 minutes Dončić played Thursday, they built their advantage by another 18 points in the stretches without him. Dončić, the main culprit for the last factor, was particularly poor in the first quarter. San Antonio attempted 48 percent of its shots on Thursday directly at the rim, far past the league average of 33.5 percent and the Spurs’ own average of 35.2 percent. What might have caused Dončić to laugh wasn’t only Irving’s layup, but also that he felt entirely confident, for perhaps the first time all season, that Irving should take that quarter’s final shot. Coming into Thursday’s game, the Mavericks had outscored opponents by 14 points in the Dončić-less minutes with Irving on the court. Sure, Thursday’s result came against the laughably bad Spurs, a team that has lost 20 of its past 21 games, and Dončić wasn’t even needed in the fourth quarter. An idling Dončić of the past — in street clothes not playing, in sweatsuits sitting on the bench, inactive away from the ball — almost always has meant bad things for the success of the Mavericks this season.

He knows that when on the floor with either of those two, he will receive bundles of open jump shots. “He understands the game, so he knows things aren’t going to be perfect. “He just wants me to be me,” Holiday said of Kidd. As a former player, Kidd understands and relates to him in a way that is often difficult for most coaches, Holiday said. I wanted to be a part of that, as well as how good this team actually is.

What We Learned From the Spurs Loss to the Mavericks (Pounding The Rock)

In the age of analytics, sports can become a confusing game of percentages, odds and acronyms. What the heck is VORP, RAPTOR and... LeBron?? Seriously?

His speed and nose for the ball make him an explosive player in spurts. But in the interim, the young guys on the roster have to step up on defense, or this 15-game losing streak could balloon even larger. He’s only going to get better, especially with all of the reps he’s been getting late in the season. Sean Elliott mentioned on the broadcast that when Branham is set and under control, his shot is beautiful. He’s strong as an ox and plays the game at the pace of a snail. At some point, these guys have to take pride on that end of the floor, even when you are facing off against one of the better offensive teams in the league. and the result is an 140+ night. It’s hard enough to hit on one pick in a draft, but it looks like the Spurs might have hit on at least two. BUT, the kid just makes things happen with the ball in his hands, and it’s so refreshing to see on a team where not many players can create their own shot. In the age of analytics, sports can become a confusing game of percentages, odds and acronyms. Look, analytics can be a helpful tool, and have advanced the quality of the game so much. [Dallas Mavericks](https://www.mavsmoneyball.com), two superstars are better than one (or in the case of the Spurs, none.) Luka Doncic is a generational talent as a scorer and playmaker.

The way he fearlessly probed the defense no matter who guarded him was cool to see, and the two silky jumpers he made in the second brought visions of young Klay Thompson. Late in the frame Doncic again made a personal push to help the Mavericks maintain their comfortable advantage. With the game no longer in the balance, Bassey feasted in the paint, while San Antonio played mostly mistake-free ball. Dallas threatened to run away with the game on several occasions, but the callow Spurs refused to relent. A back-and-forth first quarter saw Dallas’ stars Doncic and Irving symbiotic in their ample scoring opportunities and ball-dominant approaches, while the Spurs countered with their ball movement, but fell behind due to 40% shotmaking. After a floor condensation delay that spanned 18 minutes, the Dallas Mavericks kicked off the second half of the season by keeping the San Antonio Spurs winless for their Rodeo Road Trip 142-116.

When you have those two quarterbacks getting into the paint and being able to get to the rim – we would say that Luka is a great finisher, and we would say Kai is the best finisher in the league with either hand. SPLITTING THE DIFFERENCE: With both Irving and Dončić, the Mavericks have two of the best in the NBA at getting to the paint, getting to the rim and finishing strong. DEFENSE TO COME: The Mavericks surrendered 52.3 percent shooting. That’s a big bump from the 22.0 they were averaging before the deal. They rolled up a season-best 142 points against the San Antonio Spurs and cruised to a 26-point win. They have picked up the tempo, but still can slow it down when the situation calls for it.
