Shorthanded Michigan basketball gets biggest win of the season, at ... (Detroit Free Press)

Michigan basketball held Rutgers to 38% shooting and got 15 points from Dug McDaniel, 14 from Kobe Bufkin and 13 from Hunter Dickinson in a 58-43 win.

However the Scarlett Knights subbed out their star center Omoruyi and the Wolverines countered by getting the ball down low to Dickinson. The Dickinson long ball put U-M up, 36-28, before Rutgers got a 3-pointer by Spencer and layup by Omoruyi to get within three. U-M won the battle of turnovers 13-10 and capitalized, out-scoring Rutgers 17-3 on miscues. Michigan (16-12, 10-7 Big Ten) takes on Wisconsin on Sunday in the home finale before its final two games of the season, at Illinois next Thursday and at Indiana the following Sunday. It's the Wolverines' second straight victory and third Quad I win of the season; Rutgers was previously 17-1 the first 18 times it held an opponent this season to fewer than 65 points. The 7-foot-1 junior center caught and released in one motion before he held the pose as he watched the ball swish through the net.

The Scarlet Knights are 0-7 this season when allowing more than 65 points in a Big Ten game. The Wolverines have enjoyed plenty of success against Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights force turnovers on nearly 20% of possessions and are holding opponents below 46% from 2-point range, lowest in the conference. Against Michigan State, Dickinson made a clutch 3-pointer, while Reed put up eight points with 10 boards in a game-changing second half. And RU is already suffering the loss of Mawot Mag, who tore his ACL earlier this month. Williams II started at the ‘4’ until a knee contusion held him out of U-M’s two most recent games.

College Basketball Odds: Michigan-Rutgers prediction, pick, how to ... (ClutchPoints)

Get on your feet Big Ten basketball fanatics! Let's check out our college basketball odds series where our Michigan-Rutgers prediction and pick will be ...

Even with the possibility of being without Caleb McConnell for this contest, expect the Scarlet Knights to band together and take care of business on their own floor. If there is anything that Rutgers definitely has an advantage over Michigan in, it will be their ability to come up with steals defensively in clutch moments down the stretch. In order to pull this off yet again, the Scarlet Knights will also need to overcome an injury bug of their own as their top defender in Caleb McConnell’s availability is up in the air. Even so, it is not a guarantee that the Scarlet Knights will see their name be called on Selection Sunday, so the desperation may be at an all-time high when they suit up to take on the Wolverines. Nevertheless, the Scarlet Knights do rank within the top of the conference in assists per game, so playing unselfishly and finding open teammates could be a recipe for success. Clinging on to only a glimmer of postseason hope, the Wolverines enter this matchup with a 15-12 record overall including a 9-7 mark inn conference play.

Michigan overcomes Rutgers, 58-45, in defensive battle (The Michigan Daily)

The Michigan men's basketball team defeated Rutgers, 58-45, in a defensive battle against the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway.

While McDaniel helped boost Michigan to a 10-point lead with two minutes left on the clock, it was its defense that still proved insurmountable. Momentum, like a pendulum, swung fully in favor of the Scarlet Knights. The thing about pendulum’s, though, is that they have to swing back the other way.

Michigan basketball vs. Rutgers takeaways (WolverinesWire)

Michigan basketball is coming off a gigantic win against rival Michigan State after beating the Spartans by 12 points on Saturday.

McDaniel has been more and more impressive down the stretch and he’s really showing that he’s more than capable of leading this offense. But what wasn’t inconsistent against the Scarlet Knights was the stifling defense from the maize and blue. In fact, coach Howard let Terrance Williams get significant minutes down the stretch with Baker on the bench. Dug McDaniel came up big for Michigan in the final 20 minutes and Michigan walked out with a 58-45 win. And if Michigan would get a win against the Scarlet Knights, it would have to do it without star Jett Howard who got hurt against Michigan State. But the maize and blue rallied to take a 22-21 lead with 2:37 left in the half.

Michigan has not allowed less then 50 points in a contest since the 2018-19 season when it happened three times during that year. Down 13-3 with six minutes gone in the first half, Michigan basketball didn’t allow Rutgers to score 40 points the rest of the way. For Michigan basketball it is the fewest points that they have given up all year.

Men's Basketball Falls to Michigan Thursday (Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - It was a tough night in Piscataway for the Scarlet Knights men's basketball team.

We came out of the blocks pretty good and then they kind of got a run on us. They got a lot of steals, and they got to the basket. Paul's made this program a program that people want to come and watch. I want to remind them we have one more home game and Caleb (McConnell's) last home game. They have a lot of really good players. We've got to continue to get better at those and you're going to have days like that. We have got to play better, and we got to have short memories here moving on to the next obstacle." I want to remind you that we've lost five in a row back when we won 20 (games), and we lost three in a row last year a couple of times if I'm not mistaken. We got a couple of injuries that we're dealing with. This is a really good league, and we're not the only team that's going through that. Juwan Howard does a great job, and I want to congratulate them. We didn't play well enough to win in this league, to beat a good Michigan team.
