Star Ellen Pompeo will say goodbye to Shonda Rhimes' hit ABC medical drama this season, but there's plenty of hope for its future.
Sure, it would have been nice to see Meredith leading as chief of surgery for a while longer, but her physical presence is no longer necessary for the show to thrive. We get to see these interns at the beginning of their careers in a way that is reminiscent of the originals: Meredith, Alex, George, Izzie, and Cristina. The interns will still be learning from her even when she’s not physically present, because so much of her research and her methods have become integral to the program. And with the arrival of the new interns, there’s a clear shift in focus when it comes to the storytelling. Bailey’s decision to step down as chief of surgery, coupled with the fall of the residency program, put Meredith in a position to take over as interim chief. [announced](https://tvline.com/2022/08/03/ellen-pompeo-leaving-greys-anatomy-season-19-limited-role-meredith/) ahead of Season 19 that Ellen Pompeo would appear in a “limited capacity” in the season, allowing her to film a new limited series for Hulu. Nothing makes more sense than to have Meredith be the one to fix the program that she essentially grew up in. Then, the end of Season 18 brought things full circle in a way that couldn’t have been more appropriate for Meredith. It felt as though we were watching two different shows: one involving the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial, sans Meredith Grey, and one involving Meredith’s personal life and new career path. That disconnect ultimately did a disservice to the series. And more importantly, Pompeo will remain part of the series as an executive producer and will also continue to narrate the episodes. After all, the character of [Meredith Grey](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/ellen-pompeo-tvs-highest-paid-woman-ive-chosen-to-financially-empower-myself-253696/) is the namesake of [Shonda Rhimes](https://www.rollingstone.com/t/shonda-rhimes/)’ hit series, and she’s always been its focal point.

"Grey's Anatomy" star Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) opened up to "GMA" about the departure of Ellen Pompeo's character, Meredith Grey.
"We get to continue and grow the tradition that was started 19 seasons ago." "The way this story ended up unfolding for us all was something that we can all get behind," she said. "And that continues to this day." We bring them up all the time -- alive, dead, whatever." Wilson added that this on-screen dynamic is "absolutely" reflective of her real-life friendship with Pompeo. The actress reveals she has yet to see the 'final cut' of Pompeo's goodbye episode and 'won't see it until everybody else sees it.'
"Even Meredith says, 'Look, I'll be back next week or next month.' But for the character, it's such an interesting journey, when you have to say, 'Wait a minute, I have to take care of my family and I have to do what my family needs and that takes me someplace else and then I can figure out another way to fulfill my profession,'" she said. For Grey's Anatomy's 19 seasons, Ellen Pompeo's Meredith has provided the voice-over narrations, but this creates a major problem for season 20.
By having characters share narration duties, it will send the message that not only is Grey's Anatomy an ensemble show, it is full of interesting characters beyond just Meredith Grey - which is how it was able to reach season 20 in the first place. The voice-overs will make Meredith a constant presence throughout Grey's Anatomy season 19, but that creates a season 20 problem. Thus, the best and easiest solution to Grey’s Anatomy season 20's narration problem is having every character provide voice-overs for the episodes. Grey’s Anatomy can continue after Meredith, but to truly prove this, she would need to stop doing the voice-overs. [Grey’s Anatomy](https://screenrant.com/tag/greys-anatomy/) in the season 19 winter premiere, and while her voice will still be heard in narration, this creates a problem if the series is renewed for season 20. Meredith's (Ellen Pompeo) goodbye on "Grey's Anatomy" wan't too deadly nor traumatic, but necessary for the show to continue for seasons (?) to come.
[Abortions in TV, film started with hysteria, then became (mostly) accurate. I think it will be the same, actually – just maybe not the way anyone expected. He says he loves her but she doesn't give him an answer (presumably because she'd have to say it in front of her kids). But the tradition will live on. They are echoes of characters past – one has a relative suffering from Alzheimer's, another is living in a trailer, several begin budding romances – without all the baggage of many seasons past. What many characters on the show have in common is where they lived. Perhaps that's why the episode felt slightly flat; it went without the fanfare of flashbacks usually associated with a long-running "Grey's" cast member's goodbye (a la Cristina Yang, played by Sandra Oh, or Alex Karev, played by Justin Chambers). The gist: Life isn't about happy endings, but living. After professing her love to surgeon Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) in an earlier episode, he didn't reciprocate. And I am not going to beg you to love me." She began as an intern, became a surgical resident, then attending surgeon, and closed out her run on the series as chief of surgery. Ellen Pompeo has played the character since 2005, for 19 seasons and more than 400 episodes.
Grey's Anatomy's season 19 winter premiere I'll Follow the Sun said goodbye to Meredith Grey, but Ellen Pompeo isn't leaving the ABC medical show yet.
Wouldn’t trade them (or you) for the world. After the midseason finale’s fire to her home, Meredith and Nick apparently experienced a rift after she told him she loved him, and her words went unreciprocated. (See the tributes, below.) “I’ll Follow the Sun,” written by Vernoff and directed by co-star Debbie Allen, saw Meredith’s friends and co-workers throwing the beloved surgeon a goodbye party, after Meredith announced her decision to move her family to Boston, where she will continue her groundbreaking work on a cure for Alzheimer’s. However, Pompeo remains an executive producer on Grey’s and continues to be a voice star, as Meredith will keep narrating the show in her signature voiceovers. Nick couldn’t catch Meredith before her plane took off, but he called her to tell her that he loves her and that he has loved her ever since they met. And it begins to test [if Grey’s can succeed without its star.](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/greys-anatomy-watch-ellen-pompeo-leave-1235259965/) He’s very dreamy, but he’s not the sun. His words were met with a smile, but Meredith told Nick she couldn’t hear him clearly, as they were taking off, and hung up the phone, leaving their relationship in cliffhanger status. “I’m only going to Boston and you know I’ll probably be here next week,” she said. After signing on to star in and executive produce 23 episode marked Pompeo’s second-to-last appearance this season, with her next onscreen visit not coming until the season finale in May.

“Grey’s Anatomy began at a time in my career where there was actually change in my life, in a positive way and she was at the forefront of that. This is when I started crying, by the way, and I continued to through Bailey’s going-away-party toast, when she said Meredith had gone from being the “bane of her existence” to become “one of my greatest points of pride.” When Bailey got tongue-tied, Richard stepped in to say, “Dr. “Grey’s Anatomy” and Meredith Grey have become touchpoints for me: I’ve wanted her to be my doctor, I thought about her when I had my own experience with a parent having Alzheimer’s — she’s a real human being to me. So I’ll wish that Pompeo changes her mind, and think of the wise words of Cristina Yang, who once said, “Whenever we think we know the future, it changes.” [how much the then-head of the network simply didn’t believe in the show](https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fvariety.com%2F2020%2Ftv%2Fnews%2Fgreys-anatomy-ellen-pompeo-debbie-allen-krista-vernoff-chandra-wilson-1234816801%2F&data=05%7C01%7Ckaurthur%40variety.com%7C15bc949ab12a427cd81408db1481d5c9%7Ce950f25546e44144a778a6ff4f557492%7C0%7C0%7C638126320118351726%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=%2FR2RTFWfvXc3MvDXsEWOzjog%2Ffl4DNrPJzKxnJgGuvI%3D&reserved=0), and how its sex-positive content nearly spelled its doom. “I’m a grown woman with a big life, and a big career and three kids,” Meredith said. Then, of course, Meredith got COVID during Season 17, and spent most of that year on a beach in her imagination, being visited by long-lost cast members from “Grey’s Anatomy’s” lengthy roster of the dead: Derek, George and Lexie among them. She’s off to Boston, partly for the sake of the mental health of her highly gifted daughter Zola (Aniela Gumbs), and also to join Jackson (Jesse Williams), who basically dared Meredith to try to cure Alzheimer’s, backed by the incalculable funding he can give her. Meredith Grey on March 27, 2005 — when “Grey’s Anatomy” premiered on ABC and became a once-in-a-generation pop-culture sensation — to what’s being billed as a (kind of, sort of) goodbye episode on Feb. But Meredith has created new relationships, new connections, most significantly with the show’s sisterly trio of Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). Meredith had a lot of fun; she saved a lot of lives; she had a lot of sex. Meredith forged bonds so convincingly (as Pompeo did with her scene partners) that she’s been the gravitational force around which “Grey’s Anatomy” has revolved for 19 seasons.
In Thursday's midseason premiere of Grey's Anatomy, titled "I'll Follow the Sun," Ellen Pompeo, er, Meredith Grey said farewell to her longtime colleagues ...
"I fell in love with you the first day I met you," he said on the call. "For some stupid reason, she's into men so she never fell in love with me but she fell in love with you. She's impossible and she's perfect and she's brilliant and she cares and she can be mean sometimes but only when she needs to be. He warned the residents to be on time unless "you want to wind up like Helm wasting your talents, your family's investment and your futures." "You know, once upon a time, you were the bane of my existence. I want you in my life if you want to be in my life. But, no, you grew up to become one of my greatest points of pride." I said I love you," she recalled. "I moved here to be with you," he added. "I said I love you. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) stepped in to convince the baby's mother that she should go through with the surgery and shared her own experience having a baby named Christopher who became an organ donor. She told Nick that she has been through "a lot" after her house was struck by lightning and her family was forced to live in a hotel.
Tonight's episode of the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy followed Meredith's last day at Grey Sloan Memorial and set up the series' future.
“I’ve had adventures that most people only dream about and I’ve had losses that I still dream about, and if there is one thing I’ve learned in all my adventures, is that there is no such thing as a life lived happily ever after, unless the happily means simply that we are still alive, that the sun is rising on another day because with every sunrise comes the possibility of happiness and also the possibility of heartache. Tessa’s book, Meredith’s Seattle chapter and Pompeo’s 18-year run as Grey’s Anatomy‘s star all came to an end on a hopeful note: “As long as the sun rises on your life, there will be new dragons to slay. During the montage, Meredith was reading Tessa’s final book, “Tessa and the Rising Sun”, to her kids on the plane after a thumb drive with the manuscript was found in Tessa’s purse. And while it was written by Tessa, the excerpt very much applies to Meredith. But Grey’s Anatomy could take a page out of its own playbook and give fans a Meredith-Nick update when Pompeo returns in the Season 19 finale. He followed her there but his mission was thwarted by traffic so he ended up calling Meredith when she and her kids had already boarded the plane. Last season, Grey’s veteran Jesse Williams also departed as a series regular in midseason, leaving Jackson’s potential new romance with ex April up in the air. Meredith brought up an earlier office encounter where she told Nick “I love you” and he didn’t say it back, blaming his desire to take things slowly for not consulting with him when she made the decision to move to Boston. She got to perform one last surgery when famous author Tessa Hobbes (Patricia Richardson) who had undergone a Whipple in the previous episode, was back with sharp pain after lifting groceries and was rushed into the OR with a massive internal bleeding. Meredith and Nick teamed up on the surgery but could not save Tessa who died on the operating table. Nick first walked into Meredith’s office to confront her about not returning his call and planning to move across country without speaking with him. [Krista Vernoff](https://deadline.com/tag/krista-vernoff/) and directed by the series’ executive producer/director Debbie Allen, marked Pompeo’s last as a full-time cast member.

Our recap of Grey's Anatomy Season 19, Episode 7, reveals everything that happens in 'I'll Follow the Sun,' Meredith's goodbye episode.
Sure, it had a hole in the attic, but there was no beating the rent. (D’oh!) As the hour drew to a close, Maggie asked to spend the night at Amelia’s new place, and Lucas and Simone both showed up at Mer’s smokehouse — Amelia had invited him to stay there, and Mer had invited her. She was mad that he’d sent such mixed signals that she’d thought it was OK to decide to move without talking to him. He was mad that she’d decided to move without talking to him. What’s more, he realized that over the course of their relationship, he’d overlooked his wife’s coldness, an aspect of her personality that he didn’t respect. Apparently, in the two weeks that had passed on screen, he’d been waiting for an apology for her remark that she didn’t respect his willingness to change specialties to save their marriage.
The character we were led to believe was the belle of the ball has very little to celebrate. A recap and review of “I'll Follow the Sun,” the 'Grey's ...
And there’s something about the way she seems moved by the realization that Tessa got a chance to finish her final story on her own terms that leads me to believe Meredith might want to return to right some wrongs and go out the way she wants to. Simone explains what she meant by “I can’t” after Lucas finally kissed her: She was engaged before she got kicked out of her residency program, and although she has feelings for Lucas, she doesn’t want him to be a rebound. He has been waiting for her to apologize, and instead she’s “doubling down.” While they may have made history, he got a clear look at the way Maggie detaches herself from emotions. He calls Meredith, already on the plane, and gives her this swoony speech about how he has loved her since the day he met her: “I’ve loved you every minute of every day that I’ve known you.” I have butterflies just reading that line, and Meredith is going to go all “Oh, you’re breaking up. Instead, in a truly great callback, Meredith gives Nick a speech in the scrub room that echoes her iconic “pick me, choose me, love me” speech to Derek in season two: She tells Nick that she’s a grown woman, and if he’s making her choose, she is always going to pick herself and her family. The whole voice-over — Meredith reading Tessa’s last story — is about “happily ever after” not being a real thing, that it’s just new days and moving forward, but I call bullshit on Grey’s Anatomy not giving Meredith a happy ending after everything she’s been through. Who knows what is planned for the season finale, but it now has a whole lot of work to do to rectify the final chapters of Meredith’s story. It was a very long time ago — and the ABC marketing department has used that time to hammer home the fact that this episode would be Meredith Grey’s big “farewell to Seattle.” After 19 seasons, Le Grey is fleeing the death trap that is Seattle Grace Mercy West Grey Sloan Memorial, and this, the seventh episode of the 19th season, would be her big good-bye. Thanks to a last-minute reminder from Helm (?!) that Meredith is amazing and Nick is being an idiot if he doesn’t fight for her, Nick takes off for one of those romantic run-to-the-airport moments. And yet, there are a lot of episodes to go before the finale. He just wanted to, at least, be a thought in her head as she made this momentous decision — especially since he just moved to Seattle for her. In a pretty solid Grey’s Anatomy episode, the character we were led to believe was the belle of the ball had very little to celebrate.

But we already know Pompeo is returning in the finale, and that she’ll continue to narrate every remaining episode of the season. While she’s helped lead a resurgence, her narrative choices have been questionable, including Justin Chambers’ direly handled exit as well as Alex Karev, April ( [Sarah Drew](https://www.avclub.com/sarah-drew-on-her-brief-but-pivotal-return-to-grey-s-an-1846846636)), and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) being written out for no good reason. That’s why I’m already looking forward to all the progress Mer has made in Boston when Pompeo returns to close out season 19. The only noteworthy moment in “I’ll Follow The Sun” was a parallel to her epic season two “Pick Me, Choose Me, Love Me” speech to Derek (Patrick Dempsey). With multiple episodes to go, Mer’s move is the clearest example yet of season 19's strategy in that sense.
