Outer Banks Season 3 proves even the most trashy of television shows can go from being ridiculous fun to just plain trash.
When we get informed of a story of a test that must be passed and one of the characters remarks that there is always such a barrier to reaching their goal, they might as well have been referring to the path of the show itself. As long as there are more seasons to come, there will always be a need for Outer Banks to keep playing it safe so that the characters will be able to continue almost discovering something significant before the story falls back into the vacuous hole it won't dig out of. Even when there is a shootout on the water, it is so clumsily staged that it feels almost like a joke. In this journey, he encounters some of the more violent elements of the show thus far, which could be a sign of the story going into some darker territory. It is a rather awkward start that is meant to be the moment that gets us hooked for the road ahead, but it proves to be fortuitous in how everything in Season 3 doesn’t ever uncover any fun either. After they find their way back, the narrative itself remains a wandering one where a lot is going on, with little of it actually feeling like it matters.

And Kiara’s father is not the first parent to yell, “These Pogues have ruined my daughter’s life!” but he for sure won’t be the last. But some of the dialogue is truly clunky: Kiara says, “I have to go by myself … (Naturally, he doesn’t even finish out the day.) Kiara (Madison Bailey) meekly offers to her parents, “I’m just not into school right now,” in the understatement of the century. And even the fractured forces of “Outer Banks” have their advantages: There’s usually at least one cinema-worthy action sequence per episode, like an escape from a water-logged plane crash or a freight-train heist that goes array when the train unexpectedly starts moving. They all eventually wind up back at OBX, to the immense relief of their parents, and even John B’s (Chase Stokes) presumably dead father re-emerges (played by Charles Halford, doing a poor man’s Michael Shannon) in search of an even greater treasure. The first few seasons of “Outer Banks” were dumb fun — but is the amusement wearing thin?

“I think John B is just a kid struggling to find consistency in his life and hoping that he finds it,” Stokes told The Maroon when asked about his character’s motivations. Outer Banks has never been, and continues not to be, a show one watches for the nuance; it is filmed largely in dramatic close-ups, intercut with shaky-cam action, and seems to contain at least one long flashback scene and a couple of etiolated monologues per episode. A fine cast—Pankow as JJ and Charles Esten as Ward in particular— are on the verge of having their characters betrayed by the script, only to be rescued by the season’s final two episodes. There’s almost no exploration of the contrast between life on the Outer Banks and on the protagonists’ island paradise, Poguelandia. Class-warfare treasure-hunting YA series from Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke has gotten too big for its britches.
Somehow, the presence of a thousand hands for hire, constant street chases and shootouts aren’t enough to make the hour-long episodes go faster. Season Three of Outer Banks relies heavily on narration and flashbacks to keep its momentum going, a party trick that does little to hide its thin plot. It’s a pity, then, that Season Three sacrifices nearly all of the show’s original charm to keep its already-unbelievable treasure hunt theme going just a little while longer.
