'Outer Banks' Season 3 Review: Netflix's Superficial Teen Drama Is ... (Collider.com)

Outer Banks Season 3 proves even the most trashy of television shows can go from being ridiculous fun to just plain trash.

When we get informed of a story of a test that must be passed and one of the characters remarks that there is always such a barrier to reaching their goal, they might as well have been referring to the path of the show itself. As long as there are more seasons to come, there will always be a need for Outer Banks to keep playing it safe so that the characters will be able to continue almost discovering something significant before the story falls back into the vacuous hole it won't dig out of. Even when there is a shootout on the water, it is so clumsily staged that it feels almost like a joke. In this journey, he encounters some of the more violent elements of the show thus far, which could be a sign of the story going into some darker territory. It is a rather awkward start that is meant to be the moment that gets us hooked for the road ahead, but it proves to be fortuitous in how everything in Season 3 doesn’t ever uncover any fun either. After they find their way back, the narrative itself remains a wandering one where a lot is going on, with little of it actually feeling like it matters.

The Pogues orchestrate an almost-successful plan to win back the cross before jumping overboard and taking a lifeboat to The Pogues observe from a distance, then sneak onto the boat as stowaways to rescue Sarah and take back the cross. Through a series of clues deciphered through historical artifacts, the Pogues find the cross, but end up losing it to Rafe and Limbrey. The boat is seen capsizing, but John B and Sarah somehow manage to survive, then get rescued by a cargo ship headed to the Bahamas — where the gold has been flown by Ward’s pilot. ▪ Hello, Bahamas — Season 2 opens with plenty of action, as John B and Sarah arrive in the Bahamas as fugitives and are captured by the crew on the cargo ship that originally brought them to the island country. The group heads back to the Outer Banks, where John B is (wrongly) arrested for the murder of the sheriff. John B and Sarah manage to escape the island using a boat owned by JJ’s abusive father, heading straight into the storm. Most of the show’s main characters — teens John B, Pope, JJ and Kiara — consider themselves to be Pogues, while born-Kook Sarah Cameron becomes more of a Pogue as she begins a star-crossed romance with John B. Two main groups exist on the show’s fictional Outer Banks setting: the Pogues, or the working-class locals who live on “the Cut,” and the Kooks, the rich, upper-class people who live on Figure Eight Island — — Ward retrieves the gold, then makes plans to fly it by private plane to the Bahamas. Main character John B introduces the Outer Banks early on in the pilot episode, referring to it as “Paradise on Earth.” The characters — who, as John B says in a voiceover, are on a summer mission to “have a good time, all the time” — spend lots of time on the water, surfing, boating and fishing. ▪ Welcome to the Outer Banks — Let’s start with some scene-setting.

Outer Banks is always best when it lets its young leads team up to hunt for treasure and take down a bad guy or two, and that’s when the series succeeds. Even with Singh’s boring baddie, Season 3 kicks off with a bang and for the most part, commits to this momentum – except for when it separates the Pogues. If there’s one thing Outer Banks has always done, it’s take big swings, and the series only continues to makes these moves as it gets closer and closer to the El Dorado gold. The Gist: The Pogues are living it up in paradise, far away from the mayhem of Sarah’s (Madelyn Cline) terror of a father Ward (Charles Esten) and brother Rafe (Drew Starkey). John B’s presumed-dead-actually-alive father Big John (Charles Halford), meanwhile, is one step behind the Pogues as they try to free their friend, and may hold the key to all of the mysteries these treasure hunters are desperate to crack. The second season of Netflix original Outer Banks wrapped up with a thrilling heist, an escape, and finally, one big shocking twist: that John B’s (Chase Stokes) long-lost, presumed-dead father is very much alive.
