That defense fell apart to begin the second half, with Michigan State (17-10, 9-7) pushing its lead to double digits thanks to a flurry of 3s. 11 — since Indiana allowed an opponent to make double-digit 3s. It had been more than a month — at Penn State, on Jan. Walker’s shooting enlivened a crowd struggling to find its energy early, the escalating atmosphere dampening the Hoosiers’ offense. The Spartans found their way back, chiefly through a handful of long 3-pointers from Tyson Walker. Bodies moved with it, leading to open 3s and gimme 2s around the rim for active teammates.

Michigan State would shift the momentum in their favor from that point and never let the game get any closer en route to a massive victory. Michigan State hit numerous three-pointers and got an exclamation dunk from Malik Hall to push its lead to 14 points roughly five minutes into the half. The emotions of the night may have gotten to the Spartans early on because they got off to a brutally slow start, falling behind nine points early into the opening frame.

But 13 turnovers, worse shooting in the second half, and a lack of offensive rebounding ultimately did in the Hoosiers. Whatever the case, this was not the dominant Trayce Jackson-Davis we’ve come to know lately. Indiana scored 17 points in the first 7:17 of the game. It was the first time since the loss at Penn State that IU gave up double-digit threes. Indiana also didn’t have the rim protection it has enjoyed for much of the season. MSU did a good job of pulling him out of the paint, and he didn’t appear to have much lift on the floor when he contested shots in the paint. But when Jalen Hood-Schifino went down with two first half fouls, IU imploded on the defensive end. The Hoosiers did get off to a great start and led 22-13 with under seven minutes remaining in the first half. Michigan State scored 67 points over the last 26 minutes. IU only scored 12 points over the last 12:43 of the half.

Three Things: Indiana Men's Basketball loses at Michigan State 80-65 (The Crimson Quarry)

The Hoosiers started their comeback a few times, but ultimately fell short before Mike Woodson went to his bench around the four minute mark in the second half.

Despite being the time of the year when coaches typically shorten the bench, it’s clear that Mike Woodson had to make some changes with how this team has played on the road. It’s an interesting move considering Woodson had one of his shortest benches of the season last game, which paid off in the form of big performances from his most experienced players. Miller Kopp got off to a promising start with six first half points, but didn’t score in the second half before he fouled out. The Spartans are a tournament team and it was not a bad loss, all things considered. The Hoosiers started their comeback a few times, but ultimately fell short before Mike Woodson went to his bench around the four minute mark in the second half. Michigan State ended the first half on a 22-7 run, entering halftime with a six point lead and an energized, emotional crowd.
