Oscar predictions: Babylon for Best Production Design? (Goldderby)

Since Best Picture expanded in 2009, only two films have managed to win Best Production Design without a corresponding Best Picture bid.

“Babylon” managed to prevail over “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Batman,” “Elvis,” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.” Like the Oscars, the winner in this category is voted on by the organization’s entire membership. Plus, movies set in fantasy worlds have a good track record of winning this award — not just the original “Avatar” and the aforementioned “Alice in Wonderland,” but also 2003’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” 2006’s “Pan’s Labyrinth,” 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” 2018’s “Black Panther,” and 2021’s “Dune.” If “The Way of Water” does prevail, this would be James Cameron‘s third film in a row to have won Best Production Design (the first being “Titanic” in 1997). Rounding out this category are “All Quiet on the Western Front” in fourth place and “The Fabelmans” in fifth place. Each of the other four nominees — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Elvis,” and “The Fabelmans” — do. In second place with 19/5 odds is “Elvis,” which is from the aforementioned Baz Luhrmann. The former was from Tim Burton, who already had a great track record with directing movies to Production Design wins with 1989’s “Batman,” 1999’s “Sleepy Hollow,” and 2007’s “Sweeney Todd.” The latter was from 2016’s “La La Land” won Best Director for Chazelle, Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song for “City of Stars,” and Best Production Design. On paper, you would think the work on display in “Babylon” should easily appeal to older academy members like “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Mank” did. Speak up and share your huffy opinions in our [famous forums](https://www.goldderby.com/forums/) where 5,000 showbiz leaders lurk every day to track latest awards buzz. Set in Los Angeles during the 1920s, “Babylon” traces the rise and fall of multiple characters at a time when the film industry was transitioning from the silent era to the talkies. [combined predictions](https://www.goldderby.com/odds/combined-odds/oscars-winners-2023-predictions/), “ [Babylon](https://www.goldderby.com/t/babylon/)” is the frontrunner to win [Best Production Design](https://www.goldderby.com/odds/graph/oscars-winners-2023-predictions/best-production-design/) with 10/3 odds at this year’s Oscars.

Costume Designer Mary Zophres Talks Babylon's Insane Scale (Screen Rant)

Damien Chazelle's highly ambitious early Hollywood epic Babylon, which has garnered multiple Academy Award nominations, is already out on digital platforms and ...

I can tell you all the ideas, and all my methods, and all of that, but it really all comes from him, I think. He's a genius, and I don't use that word lightly, but I do think he's the singular voice of his generation. It was so hot when we shot that battle sequence, and they had a layer underneath, and then they had that tunic layer, and then they had the [chain mail], and the helmet, and it was metal in the sun. I'm so proud to have been a part of this, and [I'm] just honored that he asked me to do this film. I think that it was a time [when] luxurious sportswear was just becoming sort of a thing, and I proposed that to Damian and Brad very early on. I said, "I think that he wears sportswear instead of attending set in a suit and tie" It just made him feel like he owned it more, as opposed to being more formally dressed for the occasion. The fabric was cratered, almost, so it was just weird and off-kilter, and that's what we based the vest on. We had crazy things going on until the last day of shooting, and then it was over, and then I was like, "Okay, that just happened." I brought in sample suits from the 1920s; I found a dated one that I was like, "This is how I want Irving Thalberg's suit to be tailored, and Manny's suit." We learned that he's from the Midwest, and he comes to town, and through that speech - because you've read the script - you know what it was like when he first got there. We had the "Singing in the Rain" sequence - three-hundred [people] in front of that funny fake Ark. That was the one that had the largest amount of people, but Skid Row had three hundred.

BABYLON Interview: Costume Designer Mary Zophres On Creating ... (Comic Book Movie)

Oscar-nominated costume designer Mary Zophres talks about creating Margot Robbie's red dress for Babylon, her collaboration with filmmaker Damien Chazelle, ...

Nellie is wearing red, and I felt it was very important she be in red because it felt like the right colour for her in that opening number. We were in discussions with every single set and every single pallet, and I had a rendition of the colours which is very important. With La La Land, we did the same thing, but just had our meeting in person with myself, production design, set decoration, and the location team to go beat by beat through the colour story in each scene of the movie. I never approach it like, ‘Oh, this is going to be the iconic look for the movie.’ You start with this incredibly strong script as we did with La La Land and Babylon. All of the preparatory work Damien and I did with all the department heads manifests itself in the visuals of the film. It has to have this feel of being a little scrappy, a little cobbled together, and it was so helpful to have the dance studio 20 yards from my office. Sometimes, the costume preceded what the set was and Florence and I work in tandem. Mind you, it was maybe earlier than it would have been because we did push for a year due to COVID, but even then, I read the script for the first time in the Spring of 2019 and we met in the Fall of 2019 and just started sharing ideas. We were not technically on the film, but started gathering the research and visual ideas and did it all digitally to create albums for different characters and sets. We met in person and were supposed to start four or five months later and it had to be pushed because of the pandemic. The visuals that we gather that are inspirational springboards are so plentiful that we could wallpaper our walls in the fitting rooms with our mood boards. In a weird, meta way, it’s like you’re in the movie.

Do We Need Another 'Love Letter to Cinema'? (ArtReview)

The muddled practice of nostalgic self-referentiality in films-about-film drives much of mainstream movie production today.

Spielberg’s latest sees the filmmaker – one who is inextricably tied to the culture of movie nostalgia – skewer his own love for filmmaking and the consequences of such a devotion by aligning it with the history of his parents’ marital breakdown. Declines in cinema-going have played their part; my screening of The Fabelmans began with a short video from Spielberg thanking the audience for seeing the film in a theatre. Spielberg’s film is still a mark of the ubiquity of the nostalgic mode, but his critique of this is evident. These films also have a certain navel-gazing quality to them, but the craft of filmmaking retains a sincerity that the capitalist enterprise of Hollywood has, of course, not. The muddled practice of nostalgic self-referentiality in these films about film drives much of mainstream movie production today; filmmakers have a tendency to look inward for their stories, but so does the industry as a whole. And what do all of these films really achieve in their various attempts to amplify the cinematic experience, when they restrict it to a wistful or sensationalist history – and play into the corporate hands of studios who reproduce and capitalise this twisted mythology ad infinitum? While Babylon attempts to depict a far uglier side to Hollywood’s history, the film’s provocative style and visual excess undeniably perpetuates a kind of dazzling reverence. Not only is his attempt cloying and reductive, but the concept of ‘a love letter to cinema’ has become so ubiquitous in film marketing and criticism that it has become a joke. Jordan Peele’s Nope (2022), as a recent example, takes several elements of film history – the work of early motion photographer Eadweard Muybridge, theories of spectacle, and the longstanding exclusion of Black filmmakers and actors in contemporary discussions of canons and legacy – and uses them to create something blisteringly original and insightful. Yet where Singin’ in the Rain was expressive and effortless in both its nods to history and its cinematic achievement, Babylon feels burdened by trying to be cinema, of hoarding references and relics instead of doing something new. Recent films that use the cinema as a space for revelation – like Sam Mendes’s Empire of Light (2022), in which a romance develops between two struggling cinema workers – and films that use cinema history as the basis for their narrative – like Babylon – entertain an idea that moviegoing itself has a gravitas worth celebrating. This is the culmination of cinema, boxed in and canonised, consumable in under two minutes.
