America venerates its founding fathers on Presidents' Day, even as it reckons with the fact that many of them enslaved people. NPR's Michel Martin talks to ...
But they also - Washington, certainly, Jefferson and Madison - in particular, those three - they acknowledged that slavery was a contradiction to the ideals that they were fighting for. These notions that Jefferson wrote - that all men are created equal, that we have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, that governments can only govern with the consent of the governed - these are really fundamentally important ideas that have stood the test of time, in spite of the fact that Jefferson was perhaps the greatest example of this contradiction. A lot of people will say, well, they were men of their time, and slavery was what they grew up with, and that was their world. And understanding what they did and the contradictions that they lived with does not negate the extraordinary accomplishments. And at a different point, largely in my conversations with young people around the country talking about the Civil War and talking about presidents and talking about slavery, I thought, I really need to flip the narrative here and look at this from the perspective of the enslaved themselves. It was the result of my concern and questioning about this fundamental contradiction in American history. What was more surprising to me as I became more interested in writing about this as a historian was that so many people still did believe it. DAVIS: I don't think it was disturbing to me so much as the fact that, you know, growing up when I did, the notion that this story of the Washington who cut down the cherry tree and couldn't tell a lie was a complete fabrication wasn't so much a shock to me. And when I was in school as a kid - and I'm talking about the 1960s and even early 1970s - Washington and most of the other presidents, like Jefferson and Andrew Jackson, were still on their pedestals. And when I set out to write "Don't Know Much About History," which came out more than 30 years ago, I was really profoundly interested in answering this question, how did these men, who defend this idea all men are created equal and life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - how did those men say those words and then go home to plantations, businesses, homes completely dependent upon enslaved labor? So as we get ready to celebrate another holiday that lionizes our commanders in chief, we were wondering if there is a better way to get at the truth of presidents who've been the stuff of myth but who were also human beings and the products of their times. It wasn't until the 1970s, when a new generation of scholarship started to come along, that we began to talk about the fact that these marbleized statues, as we knew them, the faces on our money, were slaveholders.
It is still a holiday, Presidents' Day across the land, and specifically referring to the real birthdays of George Washington (on this date) and Abraham Lincoln ...

The Order of the Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. Borglum chose Washington to be the most prominent figure, representing the birth of the United States. War Department announced the creation of the “Order of the Purple Heart.” Douglas MacArthur, took up the cause, hoping to reinstate the medal in time for the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. The honoree’s name and regiment were also to be inscribed in a “Book of Merit.” Army chief of staff, sent an unsuccessful draft bill to Congress to “revive the Badge of Military Merit.” In 1968 Congress passed the Monday Holiday Law to “provide uniform annual observance to certain legal public holidays on Mondays.” The act also included a provision to combine the celebration of Washington’s birthday with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, Feb. The “Book of Merit” was lost, and the decoration was largely forgotten until 1927, when General Charles P. 31, 1879, when it was added to the list of holidays to be observed by federal employees in the District of Columbia. 22, 1862, members gathered in the House Chamber to hear the address read by the secretary of state. Monday 20 February marks the annual celebration of Presidents of the United States, but why is the holiday held on that date and where does it come from?
The logic behind this move was sound; Congress wanted to reward American workers with more long weekends, understanding that a Monday holiday was of greater value than a midweek break. Washington’s birthday was originally chosen for the holiday but a legislative change in 1968 meant that the exact date now varies each year. It was only the fifth holiday to enjoy such garlanded status, following Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Independence Day and Thanksgiving. However it was not until the late 1870s that there was a real push for Washington’s birthday to become a federal holiday. In 1832, for example, the centennial of his birthday was a major occasion and his legend was further venerated in 1848 with the start of the construction of the Washington Monument. In the 19th century Washington was celebrated as the most important character in American history and his birthdate, 22 February, became a day of remembrance.

Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee described Washington as “first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.” He stands alone for his deeds, his precedent, and his character. We Americans live under the shade of the many blessings he bestowed on his country. He presided over the Constitutional Convention in the Summer of 1787, whereby the world’s most remarkable, humanly-composed governing document came to be. He led the colonial forces to victory in the American Revolution, a feat that demonstrated brilliance, resourcefulness, and resilience against great odds. Indeed, the Constitution’s Framers showed distinct genius in creating a republican office once thought reserved for monarchs, one that combined energy and safety in the exercise of executive power. Only in 1971 did the third Monday of February take on the generic remembrance of all chief executives.

Presidents Day could be more than just a day to shop for bargains on cars or refrigerators. We could honor George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
Even though federal employees have the day as a holiday, the law did not officially change the third Monday of February to Presidents Day, so it remains Washington's Birthday. Lincoln deserves a more prominent date because of his guiding the country through the Civil War and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, Brinkley said. Brinkley would prefer Presidents Day have a name attached to it. Anthony be added to those celebrated on the third Monday of February, but that measure was not acted on. It also resulted in Washington's birthday never being celebrated on his actual birthday, since the law took effect in 1971, notes And it was also the first federal holiday to honor a single person's birth date; the second, Martin Luther King Jr. 22) or Presidents Day (Feb. After Lincoln's death in 1865, some sought to make his birthday (Feb. And some schools across the U.S. 12), but not Washington's Birthday (Feb. Are we supposed to be honoring all the presidents that day? And leading up to their birthdays, students in schools often spent time learning about their accomplishments.
"In The Shadow Of Liberty" was written - it came out about six years ago now.
Presidents Day, also known as Washington and Lincoln's birthday, is a federal holiday. Are stores, banks, post offices closed? Are there sales?
But this year marks the 100th anniversary of Coolidge's accession to the presidency — and it is time to look beyond the caricature to the real man.
Coolidge commented once “that compared with some of the older nations, our holidays are few in number.” Nowadays, we mark more events and presidents. In fact, Coolidge cut the size of government, something no other president has done since. No other modern president has taken a harder line on reining in spending and paying down the federal debt. Coolidge slashed tax rates, dropping the top income tax rate to 25 percent. (One of us, Amity Shlaes, served on C-SPAN’s 2021 survey advisory team.) Coolidge fares even worse in the Siena College Research Institute’s 2022 survey, [ranking 32nd](https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fscri.siena.edu%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2022%2F06%2FPDF-Ranking-FINAL-REAL.pdf&data=05%7C01%7CCKulat%40TheHill.com%7C9e543efc3895406353bb08db1088276d%7C9e5488e2e83844f6886cc7608242767e%7C0%7C0%7C638121949589965820%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=MzCRmk8JpImgLhmpfKqBkzzGAHBgurCOFzDtXbk0b4M%3D&reserved=0). On the criterion of intelligence, the Sienna panel ranked Coolidge 31st. The president urged his listeners to look beyond the “idealized” portrait of Washington, the “rather imaginary character” who could not tell a lie. Millions around the world heard the event through the exciting new medium of radio.
As the nation celebrates Presidents Day, a plurality of Americans consider former President Donald Trump both the best and worst of recent leaders.

Born Feb. 22, 1732, George Washington has long been revered as an important figure in American history. He was the most popular of America's founding fathers ...
Washington was such a popular figure in the new United States of America that he could’ve easily become an American counterpart to the British crown. It was also the only day of celebration in America that honored an individual American. So, Washington began to split his time between Mount Vernon, the nation’s capital in Philadelphia, and a new city that was being built on the Potomac River. John Adams was elected and sworn in as Washington’s successor, and Washington retired to Mount Vernon. In the Summer of 1787, Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. It was an effort to turn the tide of the war. He said his job was finished, and he was headed home to Mount Vernon. In a tavern nearby, Washington and several of his comrades began to devise a plan to boycott British goods. Three months later, the Second Continental Congress unanimously elected Washington as general and commander of the Continental army. In 1755, the same year Washington was placed in command of the militia, he ran for a seat in the Virginia legislature, but lost. Britain had been successful in the Seven Years’ War, which led France to cede all of its North American possessions east of the Mississippi River and in Canada to Britain, and Spain to cede Florida to Britain. Washington was born on the Potomac River in Virginia, the son of a planter.

Mississippi parents and teachers are engaged, both in the classroom and at the dinner table.
