'The Last of Us' Episode 6 Fixes One Classic Video Game Trope (Inverse)

Joel isn't as indestructible as he once was. by Alex Welch. 3 hours ago. Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller ...

That’s why it would have hurt HBO’s The Last of Us to make Joel as infallible as the version of the character video game players know. Over the course of The Last of Us’ initial episodes, viewers have seen Joel make mistakes, get tired, miss some of the shots he takes, and freeze in critical moments. It makes sense for the video game version of Joel to be an unmatched combatant because that helps make the moments when you play as him more fun. In doing so, Pascal and writer Craig Mazin also prevent The Last of Us from engaging in one of the most overdone and frustrating video game tropes. That’s especially true for Pascal’s Joel, who gets the chance in The Last of Us Episode 6 to permanently separate himself from his video game counterpart. Ultimately, though, it’s the strength of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s lead performances as Joel and Ellie that provide The Last of Us with the heart and soul its story demands.

Let's discuss The Last of Us episode six (Eurogamer.net)

THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR BOTH THE SHOW AND THE GAME SERIES IT IS BASED ON. ADDITIONALLY, THERE ARE DISCUSSIONS OF SUICIDE BELOW. PLEASE READ ON AT ...

Ellie overhears the conversation and returns to the house she is staying in (in the game she runs away to a nearby farmhouse). In the game, Joel is impaled by a spike after falling during a fight. When they are finally free from danger, Joel succumbs to his wound and falls from the horse leaving a panicked Ellie begging for him to be ok. As in the game, Joel tries to convince Tommy to take Ellie to the Fireflies. In the show, he is stabbed by one of the raiders. Here, it is abandoned save for a roaming troop of monkeys (unlike in the game, where there are infected to contend with). At first, in the show, Joel tries to hide Ellie's immunity from his brother, initially claiming she is simply the daughter of a Firefly and he is helping reunite Ellie with her family. Unlike in the game, the couple are expecting a baby. This is a similar tactic to one Joel uses later in the game - albeit in a much more aggressive way. The show's version of Jackson is very much the Jackson from The Last of Us Part 2. In fact, when we remeet with Tommy and his now wife Maria in the game, it all happens at a hydroelectric power station. Unlike this point in the game, we are now clearly in Winter, with the camera showing us a snow covered landscape.

And in the series, Pascal and Ramsey make it their own. ‘I didn’t envy them,” said The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann in the clip. "That scene is perhaps the most famous scene from the game. When the fighting stops, Ellie overhears Joel's plan to send her with Tommy instead, and The confrontation cuts deep, and speaks loud of the unspeakable. In an emotionally charged scene (the one we've been waiting for), Joel and Ellie have an argument over loss. This deep anxiety speaks to the kind of love reminiscent of Here, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey served up their finest performances yet, taking on an anticipated scene that recreated [one of the game's most famous (and painfully honest) moments: Joel and Ellie's big argument.(Opens in a new tab)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugnlEiDllOk) Until this point, Joel hasn't allowed himself to even use his daughter's name, and a moment in which Joel sees a person who resembles his daughter in Jackson reminds us how deep he has concealed his memories. Being reunited with his brother, Tommy (Gabriel Luna), Joel (Pascal) is able to confess his fears over being inadequate to protect Ellie (Ramsey), reminded of losing Sarah (Nico Parker) to violence during the outbreak — a loss also deeply felt by Tommy.

The Last of Us – Episode 6 Recap – 'Kin' (GamesHub)

Joel and Tommy finally reunite in Episode 6 of The Last of Us, but that only creates more tensions between Joel and Ellie.

Joel and Ellie rush to the rear exit. In the same room, Joel and Ellie find a map that points to Salt Lake City, and assume that’s where everyone went. Joel quickly grabs the man in a headlock from behind and breaks his neck, but as he turns to Ellie, they both realise the broken stump of the baseball bat embedded in his stomach. They ride off into the sunset and bond over several days, with Joel regaling Ellie with tales of how the world used to be. In a workshop in another part of town, Joel is struggling to fix the broken sole of his boot. In the Last of Us video game, the dam is where Joel and Ellie finally reunite with Tommy and the group he’s found a home with. Her dying wish was for Joel to take Ellie to the Fireflies. At a nearby bar, Tommy and Joel share a drink, and Tommy mentions that they’re working on raising some pigs to get bacon. Joel suddenly becomes aware of the very civil situation they’ve found themselves in, and asks her to mind her manners in front of Tommy and his lady friend Maria – the masked rider who reacted to Joel from earlier. Things continue to seem fine on the other side, so Ellie and Joel return to their usual antics, with Ellie desperately trying to learn how to whistle as Joel teases her. Joel and Ellie get to take a bit of a breather this time, in comfortable surroundings and without fear of danger, which lets them take stock of their journey and relationship with one another. A figure returns to their log cabin in the middle of the wilderness.

'The Last of Us': Gabriel Luna on Building Brotherly Bond with Pedro ... (Newsweek)

Gabriel Luna spoke to Newsweek about working with "The Last of Us" co-star Pedro Pascal, and how they naturally built their characters' sibling bond.

We are plunged into this world of danger and monsters and nature reclaiming itself, and I think Tommy is one who is looking for that, he's looking for a world where you can live with nature, and it's no longer trying to actively kill you all the time. What I used was his physicality and his body, and his mannerisms, and trying to access where that comes from and be able to share that with him. "And then I think, with him, he was drawn to my speaking voice and how I speak naturally. "And, so, he had me read some Cormac McCarthy for him and record it so that he could study that. And you can [just] be, you can have a family and you can then have those moments." star](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/agents-shield) went on: "I think, at that point, it just became a matter of studying each other and trying to find the threads that weave us and bind us. "I think that's the simple things in life that we all love and we take for granted, he believes that we can truly get back to it, that's that's his goal and that's it purpose." "I think truly what he desires is what his brother has at the beginning, which is family and to plant a seed and watch it grow. "I think if people are familiar with the game they kind of know what Tommy's purpose is, or what he feels his purpose is and what he values and what he desires," Luna said of his character. Luna added that drawing from his relationship with his own sibling also helped: "Having a brother myself, we're only two years apart very similar to the characters, it's inverted and of course I'm the older on and my brother is the Tommy, but we had all of that to our advantage and so we just tried to lean into it." "So right there off the bat we had that in common with our characters, we had that in common with each other and it was very easy to slide into those roles." [Pedro Pascal](https://www.newsweek.com/last-us-pedro-pascal-bella-ramsey-joel-ellie-tlou-naughty-dog-hbo-1772286) it was important to build a real bond together in order to accurately recreate the connection that their characters, Tommy and Joel, share in [the original game](https://www.newsweek.com/last-us-creator-neil-druckmann-teases-troy-baker-ashley-johnson-roles-ellie-joel-hbo-1772718).

The Last Of Us Episode 6: 11 Easter Eggs & Hidden Details (Screen Rant)

Much like its preceding episodes, The Last of Us episode 6 includes many game Easter eggs, other references to the wider franchise, and future events.

While the song as it was used in The Last of Us episode 1 was mainly used to foreshadow to heartbreaking events of The argument as it is shown in The Last of Us episode 6 scene is almost identical to The Last of Us game, with word-for-word elements being included. This reflects Ellie and Joel's newfound bond, which is massively strengthened over the course of The Last of Us episode 6, and shows how much Ellie has come to rely on Joel throughout HBO's The Last of Us. This is an Easter egg to the title of one of the levels of The Last of Us' university chapter in the original game titled "Go Big Horns!" The scene in Ellie's bedroom in which the aforementioned giraffe picture can be seen is also one of the most overt references to the original The Last of Us game. The track is from the original The Last of Us game and plays over the end credits, entitled "The Path (A New Beginning)". A scene from later in The Last of Us episode 6 shows Ellie in her new bedroom. At one point in The Last of Us episode 6, Ellie is shown around the Jackson stables when she takes a liking to a foal. This all points to the girl being a major player in The Last of Us season 2. This is slightly different in HBO's show, with The Last of Us episode 6 showing Joel and Ellie being accosted by Jackson residents after seeing the dam in a neat Easter egg to the original Last of Us game. That being said, here is every reference The Last of Us episode 6 made to both the original game and other aspects of The Last of Us' world. Another major setup to The Last of Us season 2 comes in the form of the unnamed girl Ellie shouts at in the canteen in Jackson.

The Last of Us's Gabriel Luna on Finding Tommy (Vulture)

Gabriel Luna, first seen as Tommy in 'The Last of Us' premiere, re-emerges in episode 6 'Kin,' when he's found in Wyoming by Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie ...

But in the end I’m proud of him, and I’m thankful to him, and I pray for his return, so I give him a hug to try to say all of that. A lot of times I think Hollywood acts as if it doesn’t make sense if we’re onscreen if we don’t speak Spanish, and I don’t think that necessarily should be the case. I try to give him a hug that will last because for both him and myself, there’s no guarantees. It was kind of a parallel landscape in terms of the story and our real lives and having that time apart. The Last of Us was shot over 217 shoot days, and to see him after having gone through several months of a really rough shooting schedule in a very, very demanding environment, it felt very real to come back to that and to see the toll it’s taken. A lot of that scene plays on Tommy’s response to seeing his brother in this weakened state. I told him as much when I saw him at the premiere and gave him a big hug. I was getting geared up to ship out to Calgary and finish the job, and then it just kept continually getting pushed by another week, another week, just trying to wait for the snow. I played both games, so I knew the story start to finish, knew how important Tommy certainly is in the latter half of the story. The way he was living his life, and the darkness that he was living through, started to envelop me, and that was very much the reason why Tommy set out on his own. Did you and Pedro film together for the first time and then actually have that span between you reuniting? “We’re thriving and we’re building and we’re growing as a family,” Luna says of Tommy’s new life on a commune in Jackson, Wyoming, with wife Maria (Rutina Wesley) and a child on the way.

The Last Of Us: Episode 6 Review (Game Rant)

Episode 6 of The Last of Us deepens the bond between Joel and Ellie, and then leaves viewers with the most agonizing cliffhanger in the series so far.

After Joel and Ellie head off further West to find the Fireflies, the pacing goes haywire. [Episode 5 of The Last of Us](https://gamerant.com/the-last-of-us-episode-5-review/), viewers knew that it was bound to have an impact on Joel and Ellie’s relationship moving forward. Later, he is unable to hear Henry and Sam walk into the room where he and Ellie are hiding, because he has lost his hearing in one ear. While the duo manage to escape their attackers, the episode ends with Joel becoming unconscious as he bleeds out. [The Last of Us adds Clickers and Bloaters](https://gamerant.com/the-last-of-us-makes-infected-scary/) to the mix. Unfortunately, the episode ends with no clue of what the future holds as Joel gets attacked once again, this time leading to him being stabbed. However, this week took viewers back to the first episode of The Last of Us where Joel experiences the fear of losing a loved one. [Episode 4 of The Last of Us](https://gamerant.com/the-last-of-us-episode-4-review/), when Joel and Ellie run into a group of hunters in Kansas City, there have been many moments where the series focused on how Joel is slowly losing grip on the situation. Experiencing another panic attack when he thinks he spotted Sarah in the community, Joel is ready to bare it all. Finding out that Tommy has started a new life, gotten married, and has a child on the way should have been a happy update for Joel, but in that moment all he is reminded of is how he failed to protect his own daughter Sarah. When the unfazed couple they meet in the middle of nowhere tell Joel about the “river of death,” he experiences a panic attack, which makes him seem much more human than he has in the past. In the past six weeks, The Last of Us has established itself as a character-driven story set in a post-apocalyptic world.

The Last of Us Episode 6 Presents Joel With His First Real Choice (IGN Southeast Asia)

Predominantly adapting the game chapter "Tommy's Dam," the HBO series once again expands what we know of the world. After Joel's years of pain and suffering, ...

The fact that Tommy is convinced to take on Ellie and leave his safehome is a huge moment for Joel. One of the biggest changes from the game though is that the Joel we follow in the series is far from the mass murderer that we control in the original. As they head out to the University to find the Firefly lab, it seems like the pair have gone from cargo and delivery man to near-partners. It's an interesting expansion of what we know of Joel in the game. One that makes the weight of his journey so far — and where game players know he has to go — even more pronounced. Instead, it was a promise to someone he loved that just happened to include helping the young girl get to her destination.

On top of that, the series has actually been rising in popularity since its mid-January premiere instead of following a typical inverted bell curve, with one recent report suggesting A player-controlled camera that's "quite far back" from the protagonist did not allow the audience to see "what's going on with [Joel's] face," leaving the games to rely on dialogue as the main method of embellishing his traits and establishing character development. Elaborating on that position, the creative director posited that the panic attacks experienced by Pascal's Joel during episode 6 aren't out of character, but simply something that wasn't really feasible for an interactive medium.

So there was less focus placed on that in terms of rehearsal, and it all just kind of happened on the day — him breaking down, of course, and me having a lot of interwoven feelings about what his request in that moment. It’s moments like that that have nothing to do with the scene, so to speak, but it has everything to do with the relationships and what the story’s about. He and I actually restructured the entire scene in the bar, never changing any of the words — because, you know, Craig [Mazin, series co-creator] is a very talented guy — but just completely restructured the whole way the scene unfolds. To to see him, see the emotion flood out of him in that way — in my mind, what I’m experiencing at that moment is: It’s weird to see my older brother cry. So I don’t think that there’s a whole lot of — I mean, he thinks about it, but I don’t think he fears for him or worries for him, just because he knows how capable he is. And that’s Tommy being the empathetic person that he is and the person that grows and wants to build relationships, build love, build community, build a family. And the fact that [Joel] says, “I came to save you” kind of tickled Tommy a little bit… Where is Joel in the rundown of what Tommy thinks about, day to day? That’s a very powerful moment and one that we wanted to recreate in an accurate way and give the gamers their squees. Just as much as it’s “I love him, I’m so happy to see your face”, when I ask him “What the f–k are you doing here?,” there’s equal amounts of joy and unease. You know, I wanted to make that embrace mean what it means for everybody who plays the games, but also have it just full of all types of meaning. And I think he’s right in a lot of ways, in terms of me as Tommy, what I want and what I desire.

"I was talking a lot with Neil about all the atmosphere of the city and what he had in mind, and what is also not there," she added. I think for Craig and Neil, it was interesting that I was kind of living in a place which was like Jackson in a way, because we were surrounded by the Serbian army, we were constantly bombarded. [The Last of Us](https://collider.com/tag/the-last-of-us/) has received so much praise since the show premiered in mid-January and much of that praise has come down to the show being a faithful adaptation – in many parts – of the 2013 video game it is based on.

'The Last of Us' Showrunners on That Potential Cameo in Episode 6 (Collider.com)

Craig Mazin: It's a little, I mean, it's ambiguous. Somebody's staring at Ellie. Neil Druckmann: Yeah. Mazin: I wonder who that could be, theoretically or not.

Speaking about the possibility of Dina being introduced to the world of the television adaptation on [The Last of Us Podcast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxEHg--3WD8), showrunners [Neil Druckmann](https://collider.com/tag/neil-druckmann/) and [Craig Mazine](https://collider.com/tag/craig-mazin/) played coy about the cameo: [Academy Awards](https://collider.com/tag/academy-awards/) ceremony. The Last of Us recap episode six – fear and roaming in Wyoming (The Guardian)

Joel and Ellie reach the river of death, only to face new dangers. Will he get back on that horse?

At first it looked as if Joel had been quick enough fending off the hunter, but we saw he’d been stabbed in the ruckus, as Ellie watched on helplessly, despite now having a pistol and knowing how to use it. Thankfully “Tommy” is a magic word in these parts, and the duo were ushered to the relative safety of the settlement they’d been looking for all along. But Sarah was always going to be off limits, even if Ellie is starting to fill the gap in his heart left by his daughter. The last time we saw Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Joel together was the night of the outbreak and Sarah’s death. I’m a natural.” And when the episode ends, if she is to nurse Joel back to health, those survival skills will be put to the test. Those with good memories will remember the original version of that song closed the first episode of the series and symbolised bad news on Bill and Frank’s musical code (1980s = trouble). He was uneasy with Ellie looking out for him and taking an extra shift as lookout, but when she explained what she had been doing and how well she had been scanning the surroundings, he couldn’t help but be impressed. Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) were in the home of an elderly couple, Marlon (Graham Greene) and Florence (Elaine Miles). As the episode went on, there was a definite sense that he’s not the protector he might have been even a year ago. If Joel’s failing hearing wasn’t enough of a worry, the way he almost collapsed when he left the hut is another sure sign he’s not in the best health. What comes after she’s given a sample of her blood to the Firefly doctors? We’re well past the halfway point of this nine-part series, and it’s going pretty well so far.

'The Last of Us' Episode 6 Recap: An Awkward Family Reunion (CNET)

Joel and Tommy explore their traumatic past as they figure out who's gonna bring Ellie the rest of the way.

Both versions end up with Joel badly wounded and Ellie in charge of their fates, but the show gives us a rather excellent cover of Depeche Mode's [Never Let Me Down Again](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snILjFUkk_A) -- the same song that played at the end of episode 1. Joel scuffles with one of them and ultimately breaks his neck, but discovers that he's been stabbed in the stomach with a piece of wood. Tommy ultimately apologizes for his comment, and Joel confesses the depths of his trauma and the agony caused by his attachment to Ellie. After determining that the rebel group is likely in Salt Lake City, they're forced to escape as a group of marauders arrive. Predictably, she chooses Joel and the dream team heads out to I-25. [The Goodbye Girl](https://youtu.be/4wiL-ry9XMI) -- a 1977 movie about a prickly man who bonds with a precocious girl. [Rutina Wesley](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2179180/), whom you might know from True Blood) turns out to be Tommy's wife, Maria, and brings them to their rather lovely settlement for a reunion. Crossing the river, Ellie and Joel encounter a group of people who set a sniffer dog on them to determine if they're infected. Joel is a little weirded out by the fact that his little brother got married without him knowing, but Ellie helps him express his congratulations. Maria is also pregnant, which makes Tommy less inclined to take responsibility for shepherding Ellie to the Fireflies. The pup gives Joel the all-clear, then it seems like Ellie won't be so fortunate -- we know she's bitten, so the dog might tear her to shreds. Joel wants to settle down on a ranch and raise sheep because "they're quiet, do what they're told."

His discomfort with the term pulls from over a century of distortion of the fundamental principles of communism, an idea that has never actually had a legitimate foothold in the modern world. Jackson could just be the next in a long line of changing tides. By the time of the outbreak, many Americans that would go on to fight the infected in The Last of Us likely only thought of the term communist as akin to ruthless dictatorship. By 2003, when the cordyceps outbreak takes place in The Last of Us, the term communism had also been weaponized by proponents of other democratic-adjacent systems, namely capitalism. It was namely seen in contrast to both socialism, in which the community is responsible equally for the production of resources, but not the consumption, and capitalism, which honestly deserves an entire article of its own to untangle. Marx, himself, utilized the theory to evoke an uprising of the working class without putting into effect the ideals of equal ownership and collectivism. How Is Jackson Commune Different From FEDRA, Fireflies And ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

At the beginning of the series, "The Last Of Us", we got an idea about what kind of policies FEDRA had employed to govern the cities under its control. We.

Also, they were not seeing the bigger picture like the Fireflies did and they were not making any effort to find a cure for the infection. There would come a time in the future when their safe haven would be discovered by FEDRA, and a problem would arise, as they were not in a position to defend themselves against a force so formidable. But it hadn’t happened yet, and we can safely say that the probability of the Jackson settlement thriving in the future was higher compared to any other regime in the United States. They had horses to travel on and had enough ammunition to protect themselves from small-time invaders or the infected who strayed there once in a while. That’s why Tommy had stopped replying to Joel when he became a part of the community, as he was not allowed to go on air. Over a period of time, the council was able to develop an efficient sewage and drainage system, and they also had heaters in place as the region experienced extreme cold. [In the fourth episode of the series](https://dmtalkies.com/the-last-of-us-season-1-episode-4-recap-ending-explained-2023-hbo-series/), “The Last of Us,” we saw that there was a separate revolutionary group operating from Kansas City that was trying to achieve a similar feat as the Fireflies (at least, that’s what they told their followers). Joel and Ellie were taken aback by the elaborate setup, especially because it was in a remote sub-Western region of the United States of America. The basic parameters of having a quality life drastically changed as, in a world that was falling to pieces, everybody was merely trying to survive. Apart from the policies that failed to deliver, FEDRA had an extremely strict criminal justice system, and people started seeing the fault lines in it. But a chunk of people still saw them as violent anarchists and didn’t feel safe in their presence. People wouldn’t have had a problem with the strict laws if the military had done its duty with sincerity.

The Last of Us breaks a taboo with this sweet Ellie moment (digitalspy.com)

You want to talk about horrors? Never mind an Infected taking a chunk out of you. You can't possibly conceive what horror is until you've had to face heavy flow ...

It removes the stigma associated with periods and for young people in particular it allows them to mentally get comfortable with the revolutionary idea that periods are not disgusting, despite decades of rhetoric screaming otherwise. Upon re-entering the bedroom from the bathroom Ellie finds a stack of clean clothes and some supplies. And it's pretty freaking awesome. [The Last of Us](https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a42704412/the-last-of-us-season-2-release-date/) episode 6 spoilers below [The Last of Us](https://www.digitalspy.com/last-of-us/) has had its coming-of-age moment and it's pretty revelatory. Very useful, on and off screen. Pretty much what you'd expect from a young teen, yet sadly her reaction is reflective of society. His wife Maria (Rutina Wesley), shows Ellie to a place where she can shower and freshen up. This time it goes further: there is meaningful dialogue and an acknowledgement that basic needs during an apocalyptic era aren't just limited to food and water. "Did you get the thing I left you?" Never mind an Infected taking a chunk out of you. There was an initial nod to the flow with its earlier Tampax scene, in which Ellie (Bella Ramsey) picked up an old box, considered it and then put it down. Or at least the meaningful acknowledgement of their existence that goes beyond a throwaway comment or scene.

'The Last of Us' Reflects Prepper Reality in Bringing DivaCups to ... (LA Magazine)

The HBO drama introduced a key zombie apocalypse element that's often overlooked in the genre, but not by real life preppers: menstrual cups.

In a postapocalypse, it’s annoying to have to deal with that and have a shortage of options. Sign for our newsletters today](https://www.lamag.com/newsletters/) It took years for people on TV to even talk about what tampons were used for — saying the word “period” — and longer for any major companies to stop using the mysterious blue liquid to demonstrate absorbency. [Craig Maizin](https://jezebel.com/fuckin-craig-mazin-an-appreciation-of-ted-cruzs-colleg-1746278435), you continue to be a national treasure. Maizin told Vulture he’s been thinking about women having to deal with this stuff in adverse circumstances for a while now. “Tampons and pads were banned by the National Association of Broadcasters from TV advertisements until 1972 — TV was deemed an unsuitable place to talk about a product essential for all people who menstruate. Because she knows: What better gift could a young woman possibly get than freedom from tampon-dependence in the smoldering wreckage of society?
