The Spaniard and soon-to-be world No. 1 claimed his third victory on the PGA Tour this year on Sunday.

Birdie.— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) Spieth is a past winner in the state of Florida, but this portion of the playing schedule has given him some fits in recent years as it is likely he tees it up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship. Who knows if he'll play at Bay Hill or TPC Sawgrass (my money would be on neither) before the Masters, but if he does, the reception will be no different than what it was at Riviera. Tiger Woods (-1): There was some good and there was some bad from Woods in his first competitive start since The Open at St. The big-hitting Bulldog stood toe-to-toe with two of the hottest players in the game over the weekend at Riv, and had a few lip-outs lipped in, a completely different story could have been told. The 26-year-old should be a legitimate contender at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in two weeks as any back concerns appear to be behind him. That was the closest he would get thanks to a pair of poor bogeys down the stretch. He has always been lauded as a player to get the most out of his runs into contention, and before this week, had never finished runner-up on the PGA Tour. A birdie from Rahm on the 14th was a punch in the gut from which Homa was never able to fully recover. Having just jumped ahead of Rahm for the first time all day, the Californian hit a bizarre tee shot that barely got off the ground and hit dead in the center of a eucalyptus tree. Good for his fifth worldwide victory in his last nine starts, the run Rahm is currently on can only be classified as historic. The Spaniard and soon-to-be world No.

Jon Rahm put together a final-round 69 to hold off Max Homa by one stroke for his third PGA Tour win of the year.

He smothered his second into the brush area further left and did well to make a bogey from there. Rahm contributed to the two-shot swing on Homa, meanwhile, records his first-ever runner-up finish on the PGA Tour after beginning the day three strokes back. “But in my mind, I feel like since August I’ve been the best player in the world.” 1 for the first time since last March and continues an incredible run of five wins in his last nine starts. Rahm made a curling, 46-foot putt from off the green on the 14th to grab the lead back from Max Homa.

Jon Rahm limits mistakes to take Riviera lead as Tiger Woods posts 67 (Madison.com)

Jon Rahm is one round away from another PGA Tour victory and a return to No. 1 in the world.

Caught between clubs and feeling a little wind in his face, he hit a cut with a 5-iron that landed toward the front of the green and rolled inches by the cup before settling 3 feet away for what amounted to a tap-in eagle. The Spaniard has not finished out of the top 10 since August, and he is going for his fifth win over his last nine starts. He opened with a 15-foot birdie putt, missed a good chance on the par-5 11th and then raised the putter in his left hand as his 25-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the par-3 14th dropped for another birdie. But the wind shifted, a cold front arrived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and he shot 79 and withdrew. And then on the weekend, he limped his way to a pair of 78s. He returned 14 months later to play in the Masters and made the cut, a remarkable feat.

He pitched onto -- and then over -- the green into another bunker, and he had to make a 6-footer for bogey. The par 3s won it for Rahm, with his putter and a full swing. He finished third in Phoenix and tied for seventh at Torrey Pines in his other two starts this year. This is the fifth time Rahm has been No. McIlroy had a 73-71 weekend and tied for 29th. Jon Rahm was the Man of Steel in seizing victory at Riviera (GolfDigest.com)

Jon Rahm made two birdies over the last four holes to win the Genesis invitational and reach No. 1 in the world again.

As with Rahm at 10, it could have been a bigger calamity, but Homa managed to get his third on the green and two-putt for bogey. But Homa made a huge mistake on the next hole when his hooked drive hit a eucalyptus tree and his second shot stayed in a dirt wash well short of the green. 8 when he stuffed his approach to a foot for a tap-in birdie, and when Homa bogeyed, the advantage was three shots again. With Homa looking at a six-foot birdie putt he’d eventually make, Rahm was facing a complete disaster, but he made an impressive up-and-down, draining his six-foot putt for “only” a bogey. Homa countered with making a 10 footer for birdie, and he was just one back. The Burbank-born Homa had delivered a title for his fans, too, with his Genesis victory in 2021 that kick-started an impressive career rise.

'He's like Thanos': Jon Rahm's brilliance leaves his competition in awe (Golf.com)

Jon Rahm is a cut above the rest of pro golf at the moment. He re-established that dominance by outdueling Max Homa at the Genesis.

Is he neck-and-neck with Rory McIlroy, or is on a level of his own? But Homa is self-aware enough to see that there’s a level he hasn’t yet reached, even if the margins are so slim they need to be measured over months and years rather than individual tournament rounds. There was Dustin Johnson in the spring of 2017, after Jordan Spieth and Jason Day in 2015. And who’s to say he won’t be able to chase after some of them? Rory McIlroy captured the mood of the field on Thursday, admitting when he saw Rahm was six under and atop the early leaderboard, he rolled his eyes (at least figuratively) and thought, “Again?!?” Thanos was back for more. Rahm escaped with a par and promptly poured in a birdie from 45 feet on the next hole. He’s won five of his last nine tournaments worldwide, and in the four he didn’t win he finished in the top eight every time. But Rahm is also playing the best golf of his life and is finally comfortable admitting it.

Jon Rahm earnings: Torrid start to 2023 PGA Tour season sets ... (Sporting News)

Jon Rahm won The Genesis Invitational on Sunday with an impressive four-round score of 17-under — two shots ahead of second-place Max Homa.

He still is several million dollars behind Scheffler's $13.17 million mark, set in just last season. FedEx Cup Playoff Only Scottie Scheffler ($13.17 million earned in 2022) has earned more than Rahm has this season — and the former after a full season. All that to say: Rahm has made himself considerably richer in the 2022-23 PGA Tour, earning roughly $1.4 million per tournament played so far. (That's certainly helped by the Genesis Invitational's massive purse, which is tied for second-most on the PGA Tour this season at $20 million). It also resulted in an incredible $3.6 million payout, easily his biggest of the season.

PGA Tour winners and losers: Jon Rahm, Tiger Woods shine as ... (CBSSports.com)

The Tour now heads to Florida with the West Coast swing in the rearview mirror as the march toward Augusta National and the 2023 Masters begins. So, it's time ...

Furthermore, and this is irrelevant to his play but very relevant to how fans perceive him, he was incredible in how he broke down and discussed the 10th hole at Riviera on Saturday during the third round. The T6 in Phoenix was nice (and fun), but he missed the cut at both the Sony Open and Riviera and was uncompetitive at Pebble Beach, a venue in which he thrives. However, he did win Torrey Pines, added a T3 at the Tournament of Champions, that solo second at Riv and continued to display just why he's so beloved by golf fans who are serious about the sport. It's never been a victory for Woods to simply stay upright and make the cut, but 2023 is not 2003, and Tiger wants to take his biggest swings at the four majors, not in the middle of February. [I covered Woods' showing at Riviera at length on Sunday](https://www.cbssports.com/golf/news/tiger-woods-score-overall-successful-return-at-2023-genesis-invitational-capped-by-2-over-73-on-sunday/), but it's hard to overstate what a positive outcome four days of competitive golf is without any serious injury concerns. Hopefully he's better for the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which he always seems to play well, but it wasn't an idyllic start to the year for the U.S. 1 player in the world, and since Jan. Throw in the hype around the Netflix documentary and the lack of LIV Golf signings (Thomas Pieters as a headline probably isn't great) and commissioner Jay Monahan might host his Players Championship press conference in March on a yacht in the pond in front of the PGA Tour headquarters in Ponte Vedra. The consolidation of their top stars into the same golf tournaments is clearly going to work, and they got Morikawa-Rahm, Scheffler-Rahm-Taylor and Rahm-Homa-Mitchell as the first three Sunday showdowns in designated events. Rahm finished in the top seven in all five tournaments he played in January and February, taking trophies at Kapalua, Palm Springs and at Riviera on Sunday over Max Homa. So, it's time to denote some winners and losers for the past six weeks. 1 players in the world, Max Homa nearly won twice, Jon Rahm did win three times and Tiger Woods even made a cameo as the first two months of the golf season unfolded.

But Rahm has had his own success in this state, where the poa annua greens remind him of the courses of his youth. Rahm bogeyed and Homa made birdie to tie the lead. 1 player in the world, all the accolades.” Rahm admitted that he was nervous before the final round but playing with his children helped settle him down. He extended his lead in the FedExCup and regained the top spot in the world ranking, celebrating with his wife and children on the 18th green before receiving the trophy from Woods himself. Like every golfer of his generation, Rahm grew up idolizing the man who now hosts The Genesis at the course where his TOUR career began. He holed a 45-footer on 14 and knocked his tee shot on the par-3 16th stiff to secure his third PGA TOUR victory in his past five starts. Now Rahm is in the midst of a run that can only be compared to Woods at his best. That is how Woods won many of his 82 PGA TOUR titles and it is what Rahm did Sunday, as well.
