His makes seemed to open up the middle of the floor late, and Indiana would never trail by more than two the rest of the way. Indiana had 15 offensive rebounds and scored 18 points off those second chances, including 7 points in the last 10 minutes. IU scored six points in the last 1:17 to close it out including a jump shot and two free throws by Jalen Hood-Schifino, right after he had thrown a bad pass that Illinois took down for a dunk. Indiana’s defense improved considerably in the second half, as they held Illinois to 30 points on 34.6 percent shooting. The Hoosiers shot just 43.9 percent from the field and had 14 turnovers, but after trailing for most of the second half, they rallied late. Three others scored in double figures to balance out the scoring.

That's what the first half of this game felt like. Indiana seemed largely disinterested on both ends of the court. Shots weren't falling on offense and Illinois ...
I thought the second half, especially as the game started to get tighter, our defense started to pick up and eliminated a lot of the threes and the good looks that they had the first half.” “[Mayer] got too many good looks in the first half from transition, from broken plays, and a couple of my mishaps just mentally and not being aware and really locked in,” Kopp said postgame. Plenty of tape to watch heading into the home stretch. He had 16 of the Illini’s 38 first half points. The worst example of this, however, was on the glass. Indiana seemed largely disinterested on both ends of the court.

The Hoosiers return home for a matchup with the Illini on Saturday afternoon.
I always love betting on good teams returning home after a road loss, and this is a fantastic betting spot for Indiana on Saturday afternoon. Trayce Jackson-Davis had a great game with 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, but Boo Buie hit the game winner in the final seconds. Meanwhile, the Illini will play in their third stadium in the last week with consecutive road contests. Illinois rates 24th overall in KenPom with an offense that is 46th in adjusted efficiency, and the defense is 28th. Starting point guard Xavier Johnson missed the last two months with a broken foot and remains out. The game will get started at noon ET and can be seen on ESPN.

Mayer accounted for a large chunk of that production — he scored 16 of his 24 points in the first half and was already 4-for-10 from deep at the break. Freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino hit the only other make from deep in the game, a shot to cut Illinois’ lead to 2 points late. He's got the fan base, and he's got everybody in his corner, so it makes it a lot easier for him.” “It wasn't fun, but it is what it is, and it's over,” Kopp said. Indiana was down 7 points at the time, was 2-for-6 from deep and hadn’t attempted a 3-pointer three minutes into the second half. “If he had miscued those plays, then I'm in his ear after the game or tomorrow saying, hey, these are things that you've got to learn the next time you're in that position. “He was just saying I had to step up,” Kopp said. Just a few possessions after Mayer’s eighth attempt, an airball, sophomore forward Tamar Bates passed up a long-range shot in favor of a jumper from just inside the arc. Indiana was 5-for-11 from the field, while Illinois finished with a 30% mark from deep. Kopp started early, hitting a deep 3-point attempt early in the game. He finished with the same number of attempts as Indiana’s entire team. “That night is over,” Kopp said after the game.

Epps made the second to make it 69-68, but Jackson-Davis got a dunk on the other end to make it 71-68 with just under seven seconds to go. Hood-Schifino tied it at 67 with a pull-up jumper with 1:17 to play. Out of the timeout, Rodgers fouled Hood-Schifino on a jumper with 30.7 seconds left to play. Both teams could gain any separation and Illinois took a timeout with the game tied at 65 with 1:49 to play. Out of the timeout, Jackson-Davis turned it over and Luke Goode hit a long jumper to push the Illinois lead back to five. Neither team could generate much offense out of the timeout, but Indiana did manage to trim another point off the lead to trail 50-44 with 10:48 to play.
Basically, they had to get Illinois out of their half court defense to score, although the Hoosiers also used some high-low actions involving Trayce Jackson- ...
Race Thompson (B) Thompson did a good job finding the openings playing off of all the attention on Jackson-Davis, and his rebounding production was improved as his conditioning and comfort with his knee improves. But Kopp did struggle on the defensive end in the first half, especially with keeping track of Matthew Mayer. He scored on put backs, in transition, and through the offense. Mayer scored 16 in the first half including 4-of-7 from three, but he made just 1-of-7 from the field in the second. I thought the second half, especially as the game started to get tighter, our defense started to pick up and eliminated a lot of the threes and the good looks that they had the first half.” In the end, Indiana won the rebounding battle over a good rebounding team, 41-37. In that span the Hoosiers made multiple threes off offensive rebounds, and scored multiple times in transition. The Fighting Illini were 0-of-8 from three in the second half, shot just 34.9 percent, and committed just .83 points per possession. Indiana scored 18 points on second-chance opportunities, and they got 11 more in transition. But IU turned it over just three times in the last 15 minutes, and they scored 32 points in the last 12 minutes. “I thought we did a great job on Trayce (Jackson-Davis) and he’s got 26 and 12,” Underwood said. Indiana survived a home court scare on Saturday, earned its third straight win over Illinois, and clinched at least a .500 record in the Big Ten for the first time since 2018.

Indiana brought back just two starters this season from last year, in Berger and Holmes. At her current pace, she has a realistic shot of passing Tyra Buss next season to become the top scorer in IU history. Scalia has had an up-and-down season, but at her best, is a deadly outside shooter. She moved into second in program history in career blocks with five against Michigan, but it could be tough to reach that top spot. That means the Hoosiers will bring back five of their core six rotation players next season, with Holmes, Scalia, Chloe Moore-McNeil, Sydney Parrish, and Yarden Garzon. And that future is quite bright.
