For their first concert in Austin since 2012, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band brought out hits, deep cuts and George Strait.
Springsteen plucked a pink cowboy hat from the front row and did a little shimmy. It was just a herald, though: “Wrecking Ball” came soon after, followed by a glorious “Badlands” — which saw Springsteen park on the lip of the stage, jutting out into arms outstretched like reeds — and “Thunder Road.” “Because the Night,” which Springsteen co-wrote with Patti Smith, who made it famous, was my personal highlight. Before a stirring “If I Was the Priest,” Springsteen mentioned he wrote the song when he was 22. Every minute of every hour, the Boss clocked in, eyes shut and lips rolled back to let out that gravelly howl. He busted out the harmonica for an excellent rendition of “The Promised Land,” which seemed to cause a Pavlovian response (a spontaneous “oooh”) in the crowd. Drummer Max Weinberg made a ratatat hurricane on “Candy’s Room,” and Nils Lofgren unleashed heaven and hell with his pick on “Because the Night.” For newbies, a bit of a challenging experience; for the faithful, it seemed euphoric. Eddie Manion took the sexy sax solos at Moody. A fleeting thought, as Springsteen ended the fool-proof opener with kick-in-the-head strums and rounded up his crew with a finger circled above his head. Little Steven Van Zandt joined Springsteen face to face on the mic for the first of many times, the two old friends serenading each other with a string of la las. And not that 33 is that young, but rarely have I felt younger, especially after [last week’s Death Cab for Cutie show](https://www.statesman.com/story/entertainment/music/2023/02/11/death-cab-for-cutie-review-concert-ben-gibbard-acl-live-austin-tx-tour-2023-setlist-asphalt-meadows/69895593007/) seemed hell-bent on reminding me of the passage of time.

As I flew down 51st St., KUTX mixologist Jody Denberg cued up The River bend through the Texas panhandle, “Cadillac Ranch.” Eighty minutes in, the next 85 thundered and bucked, prowled the backstreets and drank in the night, rising and falling and wrecking. Providing the provenance of Letter to You’s “Last Man Standing,” he relived his sister’s boyfriend George Theiss asking him to audition for his band: It was the passion that we followed as children. the job I chose before I ever called it work. That then setting up “Nightshift” suddenly felt like the most delicious supper club set ever. “I followed him to a little part of town called, for some reason, Texas. It’s like you’re standing on the railroad tracks, with the white-hot light of the oncoming train bearing down on you. Fortunately, it proved the B E S T one, “Nightshift,” a 1985 hit by the Commodores post-Lionel Richie and tribute to immutable crooners Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, both of whom died the year before. Still tingling, hormonal, “Candy’s Room” segued sans pause into a horn-bleared, solo-smeared, 13-minute bounce through the wild, willing, and no longer innocent “Kitty’s Back” like a prelude to next week’s Mardi Gras. Last night, the boys in the band did NOT dust off “Growin’ Up” or anything else off Springsteen’s 1973 debut, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., an album recorded half solo and before the band represented today solidified. Invest in your future today or dwell forever in the past.
After a long hiatus, The Boss returned to the Capital City with a concert for the ages.
Amid one moment of reflection, the E Street Band settled to a simmering musical interlude as The Boss riffed, alluding to all the memories stored up over the years. As the Boss recounted the story of forming that first band and writing his earliest songs, he reflected on the “clarity of thought,” that comes with seeing a friend near death. He clearly believes in the transformative power of music, and by proxy convinces the audience to believe as well. Over the course of two hours and 50 minutes, the Boss delivered a spellbinding set that drew from 10 different albums, including several from his newest effort, Letter to You. The two shared an embrace before Strait departed and left the Boss to launch into “No Surrender,” an apt opener choice for a guy who seems like he never will. Bruce Springsteen returned to Austin last night, ending the longest Boss drought since the rock legend played a gig in the city for the first time at Armadillo World Headquarters back in 1973.
