At the top of the Genesis Invitational leaderboard are Max Homa and Keith Mitchell, who both finished their opening rounds at 7 under. For each person, that was there at the start, it was there in their professional middles, and it will be there at Tiger’s end, just as it was for Arnold. But for here, let’s focus on the thing that connects Arnold and Tiger the most, their mutual love of competitive golf. He used the word “product” 10 times in the press conference, and he was referring to his Tour and the LIV “product” too. When Tiger played in his first one, in 1992, Nissan was the sponsor and Fred was the winner. The world would be a boring place if everybody thought about life, and approached life, the same way. In February 1992, a sprightly 16-year-old golf prodigy by the name of Tiger Woods made his first PGA Tour start at the Riviera Country Club in California.

A $3.6 million winner’s reward will be up for grabs, though defending champion Joaquin Niemann will not be in California to defend his title. Woods arrives in California on the precipice of greatness. How to spot one of the biggest golf swing changes Tiger Woods ever ... (GolfDigest.com)

Tiger Woods' tempo has changed over the years, and you can still see the effects in his golf swing at the Genisis Open.

There was less of a pause between the backswing and downswing because it was less reliant on timing overall. As Tiger explains in the video below, his younger swing was one that relayed on good timing, and lots of distance. "The club was inside, across the line. But the book also explains that even though the ratio of Tiger Woods' swing stayed at the same 3-to-1 ratio, his tempo changed: Up until 1997, Young Tiger's swing moved at a Tour Tempo-recorded 27/9 rate: 27 frames on the backswing, and 9 on the downswing. Simply put, both Tiger's backswing and downswing have gotten faster, and that's the tempo he uses today. In the book, Novosel conducted a detailed analysis of the tempo of various different pros' golf swings, and established the now widely-accepted standard that pros swing the golf club at a 3-to-1 ratio, meaning that their backswings are three times longer than their downswing.

Four holes to go to get it back to level or even under par. Nice move late in the day, and he's right on the probably cut line with 20 holes left before the cut is made. Keith Mitchell joins Max Homa at the top of the leaderboard with a 7-under 64. [pic.twitter.com/VfDTmuY2V0] [February 17, 2023] A 2-under 69 -- his first score of 2 under since the first round of the 2020 Masters, which was played in November. "Momentum is a big thing in sports, but if you put the effort that needs to be put in throughout the year and weeks off and at home and you do the little things right, you give yourself a better chance of never really hopefully feeling that," he said. It would be surprising if he wasn't in the mix late on Sunday. He is absolutely a problem for everyone involved, and if he somehow wins this week that would mean he lost to nine golfers in five PGA Tour events before the Florida swing. There's still a long way to go, but the caliber of golf he's playing -- positive strokes gained approach in his last eight starts -- combined with his history at Riv -- three consecutive top 10s -- make him a scary proposition to deal with the rest of the way. I posed the question last week: Is Homa the third-best player in the world (behind Rory McIlroy and Rahm)? Woods' closing kick was nearly as remarkable as his speed off the tee, and he once again reminded us why he's the best to ever do it.

Tiger Woods shoots 69 at Genesis Invitational, trails by 5 shots (ESPN)

Tiger Woods closed with three straight birdies for a 2-under 69 in the Genesis Invitational, leaving him five shots behind Max Homa and Keith Mitchell.

"I'm going to work on the range," McIlroy said. "I hadn't been out here so I've missed some of the things that have transpired on Tour, which is kind of fun." As Woods explained, the time in between will feature plenty of icing and treatment in order to get ready for tomorrow. Throughout the course of his round on Thursday, he still had a slight hitch in his step as he looked to limit the pressure on his right ankle. During a few times in the round, Woods removed his right shoe and adjusted his ankle brace and sock. The putt slipped in on the right side and seemed to give Woods the spark he needed. Woods set up on the left side of the tee box and carved a nine iron that faded right and landed pin high, five feet from the cup. "I was trying to calm myself down all day," Woods said. "There's nothing like come game time, just the feeling of the butterflies and trying to calm all that stuff down," Woods said. "I didn't want to be the idiot host to miss it right in front of everybody after I just went birdie-birdie," Woods said of his birdie putt on No. Over the course of more than five hours, Woods grinded his way to clutch pars and bounced back from three bogeys only to finish with a flurry of vintage shots that changed the entire tenor of his round. Given his physical state, there was an expectation that the back nine would be tough for Woods to endure.

In the scoring room afterward, Woods said McIlroy announced that he needed to go practice with his driver. “Right behind you,” Woods joked, knowing full well that he would be heading back to his hotel room for extensive icing treatment to prep for his 7:24 a.m. But he still slightly dragged his right leg due to the ankle that was damaged in his car accident two years ago, as well as the plantar fasciitis that he’s contended with more recently. It was a lively and big crowd gathered in front of the iconic clubhouse and lined the first hole, but it wasn’t the zoo that some might have expected. Woods joined McIlroy and Thomas as the trio birdied the easy, par-5 first hole, but he made only one birdie against three bogeys over the next 14 holes. “So, I've had so many surgeries that the ankle just keeps changing, the leg keeps changing. Now, this was a Thursday in the big city after all. Even when Woods made a third straight birdie at the 18th hole to shoot a hard-fought two-under-par 69—five shots more than leaders Max Homa and Keith Mitchell—Riviera’s grassy amphitheater was only about half full. Justin Thomas arrived, followed by McIlroy, and if the cheers and chants for Woods were hearty, they were hardly much louder. Part of the pleasure, Woods said, was playing with his friends, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy, who likewise had strong rounds. “So I’ve had so many surgeries that the ankle just keeps changing, the leg keeps changing. Really, Tiger? You're a 47-year-old 'girl dad' but thought tampon ... (USA TODAY)

Tiger Woods employed basic misogyny to insult his good friend Thursday, a knee-slapper of a dig against female athletes: You hit the ball like a girl!

Please tell me it’s not because he wants to send the message that Justin played like a girl. “I went to high school with some boys who did those kinds of things 35-40 years ago. I’ve played golf my whole life thanks to my father, but I know very few other women who do. The powers that be in golf, some of the greatest capitalists among us, chose sexism over capitalism. His daughter Sam, now 15, grew up playing soccer and had just played in a tournament in Florida when she arrived to watch him win the Masters in 2019. Or does he simply steal them out of the women’s locker room at country clubs when no one is looking?

Tiger Tracker: Follow Tiger Woods with shot-by-shot live updates ... (usatoday.com)

Follow Tiger Woods with shot-by-shot live updates from his Friday round at the PGA Tour's 2023 Genesis Invitational.

He’ll have a wedge to the green and a great chance to get back to even on the day. He lands his tee shot on the fringe and lets it release towards the back right pin for a tap-in birdie. Really nothing much to say here, just a perfect shot at the right time to keep his round in check. The miss on Thursday was right and the same holds true today as Tiger loses another one off the tee, this time into the gallery, and without a helpful kick off a tree. That’ll be about 14 feet for par but he doesn’t give it the credit it deserves and misses on the right. He’s a long way from the green but he’s at least got a shot at it. He came away with a pretty good lie and actually had a shot at the flag from 138 yards out but he left it short, maybe a club short. It hit a tree and kicked back to the left in the rough towards the fairway. Misses this one from eight feet on the amateur side, just didn’t pair the pace with the line. He stuffed his tee shot at the par-3 16th, canned his first 20-plus footer of the round on No. It’s early and cold, so easing into the round with an iron and leaving a clean shot from the fairway was smart. Playing alongside good friends Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas for the first two rounds, Woods birdied his final three holes on Thursday for a 2-under 69 to put himself in position to make the weekend cut.

Tiger Woods' tone-deaf prank puts damper on otherwise thrilling day (Golf.com)

During Tiger Woods' much-anticipated return to golf Thursday at the Genesis Invitational, he pulled a controversial prank on Justin Thomas.

When Woods arrived on the 9th tee, he was one under for the round and fresh off a birdie at the 8th. The mood grew even more festive on the back nine, which Woods closed out with a trio of birdies (2-4-3 on his card), moving from one over to two under in three holes. Woods tossed his putter on his bag, glanced over at Thomas and shot him a cheeky grin, to which Thomas could only shake his head. He’s nervous as can be because he didn’t want to be the one to miss on 18. I didn’t want to be the idiot host to miss it right in front of everybody after I just went birdie-birdie. Some of that razzing came on the 9th hole, where Woods had blistered a 323-yard drive past both of his partners. But given Woods’ place in the golf world, it’s hard not to look at the pre-meditated stunt as a head-scratcher. Playing in a glittering group with Thomas and Rory McIlroy, Woods’ ball speed was so zippy that on occasions he outdrove his long-hitting partners. “It was nice that I had this unbelievable pairing, two great guys, two great friends,” Woods said after posting a three-under 69. In the scramble format, Mike had dumped his tee shot in a fairway bunker. Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas have a long history of needling one another. A couple of years ago at the PNC Championship, Charlie — who was playing alongside his father in the team event — left a note for Thomas and his father, Mike, who were playing in the group behind the Woods.

Tiger Woods remains 2-under at Genesis Invitational midway ... (The Athletic)

Tiger Woods shot even-par through the first nine holes of his second round at the Genesis Invitational on Friday to remain at 2-under on the tournament.

Opting to putt, Woods tried to skirt a 70-foot putt along the left edge of the bunker, but instead caught the edge of the bowl and saw his ball careen into the bunker. The birdie brought him back to even on the day. Having opened Friday on Riviera’s back nine, Woods arrived at the 17th at 1-over on the day. Woods will look back on Friday and remember a handful of missed birdie opportunities on the front on those mistakes on the back. Seeing his driver finish in a fairway bunker, he was forced to loft a shot into the fairway on the 604-yard par-5. On a brighter note, Woods showed his still plays with enough power to compete, ranking T22 in driving distance, averaging over 300 yards off the tee. Tiger’s stats carry all the telltale signs of a player knocking off a lot of rust. All that said, while Woods hit the ball well at times in Friday’s second round, he was stifled by a two-way miss with the putter on his front nine and a few mental mistakes on the back. At the time of Woods’ finish, Mitchell had completed Round 2 and Morikawa was on No. The biggest positive, perhaps, is that following a Thursday afternoon finish, Woods turned around for a Friday morning start and made it through another 18 at Riviera without looking overly labored or aching. The 47-year-old has appeared in three major tournaments since a February 2021 rollover car crash in which he sustained multiple serious leg injuries. - Keith Mitchell and Collin Morikawa lead the tournament, shooting 9-under.

Late mistakes jeopardized his place in the field for the second half of this tournament, but as the difficulty of Riviera increased on Friday, Woods was ultimately able to find himself a weekend tee time. After putting his second into the bunker, Woods converted a slippery 5-foot bogey putt to remain in red figures at 1 under. The putter began to cooperate in the middle stretch of his back nine, but unfortunately for Woods, this was met with subpar approach play. Bogeys ensued on the following two holes as Woods dropped to even par and just inside the projected cut line. Turning in a 3-over 74 on Friday was how Woods followed up his opening round of 2-under 69 from Thursday to remain inside the top 65 at 1 over. Hitting his approach shots inside 8 feet on both holes, the 47-year-old was unable to convert either chance as a cold putter matched the chilly California temperatures early.

Tiger Woods 1 over, could miss cut at Genesis Invitational (ESPN)

Tiger Woods is in danger of missing the cut at the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club after shooting a 3-over 74 in the second round Friday.

On the ninth, his last hole, his second shot landed in a greenside bunker and he couldn't get up and down. Woods was more efficient with his iron play and work around the green, but he lost nearly 2 strokes to the field in putting during his round. The highlight of Woods' round came on the par-3 14th. Woods made putts of 10 feet and 5 feet to save par on Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, and sank another 10-footer for par on the 4th. He missed four putts inside 10 feet in the first nine holes. After making the turn, he missed another 9-footer for birdie on No. Andrews in July, which was the last time he had teed it up in an official event before this week. Just didn't make the putts early and the middle part of the round when I had those opportunities. That was his first official event after he was seriously injured in a car wreck outside Los Angeles in February 2021. With a 36-hole total of 1 over par, Woods might be just on or outside the cut line, depending on what happens in the second wave of players Friday. A day earlier, he birdied each of his last three holes to card a 2-under 69.

Genesis Invitational - What's in store with Tiger Woods expected to ... (ESPN)

It's been seven months since Tiger Woods played competitive golf, so making the cut is no small feat. Here's what more we can expect from the Genesis ...

After having his tee shot roll back to the front of the green, Woods contemplated using a wedge to chip it over the bunker that sits in the middle of the green. Even if he isn't in contention on Sunday, playing the weekend is a great chance for him to test the strength and endurance in his surgically repaired right leg and ankle. So it wasn't a surprise that his work around the greens and on them left a lot to be desired. Shooting under par over the course of his first four rounds this season would be a remarkable accomplishment given the situation, and though I think that will be plenty difficult, it's an attainable goal. This is the kind of test he needs as he continues his comeback. I don't have that because of the limitations in my back and my leg." "There's things technically that we have found that work, but if I try and step on it and use the ground, it just doesn't happen anymore," Woods said. Given that the turnaround from Thursday to Friday was a quick one that, as Woods said, required plenty of ice and treatment overnight, it was no surprise he may have slowed down and experienced more discomfort in the second round. He's using a lot of core strength, but has to be careful doing that because of his fused back. I think his frustration with his putting probably drained him of some of the adrenaline he had in the opening round. Schlabach: After all of his surgeries, I think it's absolutely remarkable that Woods is still averaging more than 300 yards off the tee. He shot a 3-over 74 to finish the first two rounds at 1-over.

Tiger Woods stumbles to 74 on Friday at Riviera, needs help to play ... (GolfDigest.com)

Woods is looking to make the cut on tour for the first time since the 2022 PGA Championship.

Woods was 10 shots off the lead (Keith Mitchell maintained his overnight lead with a 69 moving him to nine under) when he finished Friday at lunchtime, but it’s more about those beneath Woods on the leaderboard. Woods has not played weekend golf since the Saturday of last year’s PGA Championship, when he made the cut at Southern Hills only to withdraw injured before the final round. “If I chipped it up on top, there's a chance that it could actually come back to the front part of the green,” Woods said of the decision to putt around, rather than chip it over, the bunker. Then the middle part of the round I could have turned it around a little bit, and I did not.” Among those was putting it straight into the famed bunker in the middle of the green on the par-3 sixth, one of three back-nine bogeys that halted his momentum. 10 Friday morning, Woods battled to an even par front nine with birdies at the par-3 14th and par-5 17th.
