However, more recent interpretations such as Margot Robbie’s in the Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey films, and the character’s [HBO Max animated series](https://www.polygon.com/reviews/23283048/harley-quinn-season-3-review), have moved on from that. While yet to be announced, that casting is certainly supported by the image Phillips shared to Instagram, which shows Gaga absent Harley’s punky-harlequin get-up, but grasping Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck by the neck and staring into his face with passionate intensity.

"Joker" sequel is underway in New York and Los Angeles, set for an Oct. The critically acclaimed film earned 11 Oscar nominations, winning two awards – Phoenix won as best actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir took best original score. Gaga worked with Phillips on her starring role in "A Star Is Born," which Phillips produced. It has not been confirmed what role the singer/actress will be taking on. Having been transformed into the Clown Prince of Crime in the first movie, the sequel will find Fleck now imprisoned in Arkham Asylum, where he meets the surprisingly understanding psychiatrist Dr. The image, which Phillips shared to [social media](https://www.instagram.com/toddphillips/), finds Gaga’s staring with a mixture of love and fear at Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, who will of course reprise the role of Arthur Fleck aka the Joker in the highly anticipated follow-up. While the actress does not yet have the glam, clown-like look just yet, the image clearly does reveal that Joker: Folie à Deux will explore the beginnings of the relationship between Quinn and Joker. The character has been portrayed in live action before by Margot Robbie in the likes of The Suicide Squad, and currently leads her own animated series on HBO Max in which she is voiced by The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco.
