It was a carbon copy of the first meeting in Bloomington when IU fell behind 34-17. The Hoosiers shot just 6-of-21 from the field before the break including 0-of-5 from three. Indiana trailed 39-20 at halftime with poor play on both ends of the floor. Race Thompson and Jalen Hood-Schifino both had 13 points for the Hoosiers.

As a result, the Hoosiers project as a No. Northwestern plays at a slow, methodical pace as they rank 273rd nationally in tempo. While IU’s defense is nothing to write home about, their 9.2% block rate ranks in the top 10 in the country. Still, the advanced ratings aren’t totally bought in on the Wildcats as they sit at No. The Wildcats covered 60% of their games while 60% went under. 19 in KenPom and No. 14 Indiana Hoosiers (18-7) visit the Northwestern Wildcats (18-7) on Wednesday night! What to Expect: Indiana at Northwestern (Inside the Hall)

The Hoosiers have won eight of their last nine and three straight games with victories over Purdue, Rutgers and Michigan. The Wildcats joined Indiana in second ...

Picked to finish 13th in the Big Ten in the preseason, Northwestern has far exceeded expectations and should be back in the NCAA tournament for the first time in six years and just the second time in program history. Audige is arguably the best perimeter defender in the conference and Buie does an excellent job getting to the rim off the dribble. The Wildcats committed only 125 turnovers in 14 Big Ten games (8.9 per game) compared to 182 (13 per game) for its league opponents. 1 Purdue and sole possession of second place in the Big Ten standings on the line, Welsh-Ryan Arena should be full of energy. The holes for Northwestern’s defense are on the interior. Northwestern is averaging 18.7 free throw attempts in Big Ten play compared to 16.7 for its opponents. Hood-Schifino scored a season-high 33 points and was 7-for-10 on 2s, 5-for-7 on 3s and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Buie finished with a team-high 26 points and went to the line six times while Audige added 19 points and attempted 10 free throws. Indiana committed 16 turnovers, leading to 25 points for the Wildcats. Our focus has just got to be, we got to go in with a defensive mentality.” Defense was a major problem for Indiana against the Wildcats in Assembly Hall. While it looked like a horrible loss at the time, Northwestern has proven to be a more than formidable Big Ten team this season.

Missed opportunities haunt No. 14 Indiana men's basketball in loss ... (Indiana Daily Student)

The Indiana team watches Northwestern guard Boo Buie shoot free throws after a technical foul Feb. 15, 2023, at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois.

Buie’s and the game’s final points of the night were the most obvious difference maker in shutting down Indiana’s comeback attempt. Once Indiana had nearly completed a full comeback late in the second half, bouncing back from a once-21-point deficit to one of merely 2 points, every possession was invaluable. As a result, Buie went to the line for four free throws, sank them all and retained possession of the ball. The play was drawn up perfectly: senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis pivoted past his defender to turn backdoor into a wide-open lane. Moments later, Woodson brushed Scirotto’s arm as he continued to argue the call and was given a second technical. Still, it’s impossible to say that just one play, player or even officiating decision determined the outcome of the game.

Freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino shoots a three Feb. 15, 2023 at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois Northwestern beat Indiana 64-62. By Evan Gerike.

“The official didn’t call it, but at the end of the day, Boo made a hell of a shot,” Woodson said. “It took us the whole first half to slow down and figure them out.” “He made a few shots, but he struggled to shoot the ball.” Junior guard Trey Galloway was guarding Buie on his drive to the basket, and Buie appeared to shove Galloway to get his shot off but wasn’t called for a foul. This time, however, the score also didn’t tell the story of Indiana’s effort down the stretch to resuscitate a lost cause. He ended the night with a double-double and eight assists, falling just shy of his second triple-double of the year.

Indiana's loss to Northwestern shows that only 20 minutes of good ... (Inside the Hall)

The final heave from Jalen Hood-Schifino sailed across half-court, hitting the rim before bouncing out of bounds. The crowd at Welsh-Ryan Arena erupted as ...

Michigan was another game in which Indiana struggled most of the time, coming alive at the end to pull out a narrow victory. Being a leader on this team, I gotta be up, I gotta be ready to go and I wasn’t.” Both finished the first half with 11 points, and Indiana couldn’t adjust in-game on either end to slow them down. Because the fact of the matter is, no team can play good basketball for 20 minutes and expect to walk away with a win. Even in their better half of the game, the Hoosiers still struggled continuously with turnovers and missed opportunities. Jackson-Davis was double or triple-teamed every time he had the ball, and no one else stepped up to take, or make, shots. (We) couldn’t make shots and we were throwing the ball all over the gym.” Jackson-Davis was effectively shut down for the majority of the first half, scoring only five points, but surged into the second half with a clear goal: to lead his team as he had so many times before. Northwestern took sole possession of second place in the Big Ten standings, bumping the Hoosiers down to third. They’re now just a game ahead of Illinois in the loss column and the Illini come to Bloomington on Saturday. “These teams are too good in the Big Ten.” With the loss, the Hoosiers are 18-8 overall and 9-6 in Big Ten play.

Xavier Johnson close to returning for IU basketball (The Daily Hoosier)

On his pre-game radio spot on Wednesday evening, IU coach Mike Woodson said Johnson is “probably another week or two” from returning. That was the first time ...

While he has been doing conditioning work during his rehabilitation, Johnson may need to be eased back in on a minutes count while he gets fully back into game shape and regains his feel for the game and rhythm. The big questions are how IU will weave Johnson back into its rotation, and how effective can he be making a mid-season return during a key stretch of the season? The Virginia product had previously never missed a game in four plus years due to injury, and he has started every game he’s been available at Indiana. With just five regular season games remaining, it will be interesting timing to try to integrate a key contributor back into the mix. Woodson has only played three guards — Jalen Hood-Schifino, Trey Galloway and Tamar Bates — in the last two games, and Bates has been struggling. That was the first time Woodson put any kind of timeline on a possible return for his veteran floor general.

IU basketball: Indiana at Northwestern — The Report Card (The Daily Hoosier)

Touch fouls by Tamar Bates and Jordan Geronimo had the IU bench hot, likely because they didn't feel the game was being officiated the same way on both ends.

He made some big shots, but was a bit of an up-and-down night, and he hasn’t proven to be the same offensive player on the road. Jordan Geronimo (C) He was called for two first half fouls and never got back in the game. Tamar Bates (F) The sophomore guard continues to struggle on the road, and just seems unable to find ways to significantly impact games right now. Trey Galloway (B-) Galloway was steady on both ends for most of the night, although he’s playing a spot where IU needs more offensive production. Race Thompson (B) Thompson did a good job playing opposite of Jackson-Davis and finding openings created by the Wildcat doubles. That might be a step too far, but he was bothered by Northwestern’s double teams, and unable to get anything going before the break. The focus of the Northwestern student section’s attention all night, Kopp couldn’t get into a rhythm. Indiana found some answers in the second half, but the one thing they couldn’t solve was Boo Buie, who scored 10 points after the break including a game-winner. Indiana still trailed by 17 with 15:50 left in the game, before they mounted a furious rally and tied the game at 62 with 28 seconds remaining. It didn’t hurt that the Wildcats started missing some open threes, something Indiana’s defense allowed plenty of as they struggled at times against Northwestern’s three quick guards and a complex offense with a lot of off ball movement.

Three Things: Indiana men's basketball loses at Northwestern 64-62 (The Crimson Quarry)

After playing one of the worst first halves of the season so far, Indiana battled back to tie the game at 62 with under a minute to play.

Then he came out in the second half ready to for the double team, and everything started clicking for the Hoosiers. In the big picture, a two point loss on the road to a tournament team that’s now second in the Big Ten - as big of an indictment of the conference as there ever has been - will not hurt Indiana’s postseason aspirations. Race Thompson had the other four points, getting his first two field goals of the night and finally resembling the healthy player we saw in the first half of the Iowa game. From the first possession of the second half, it was clear that Indiana had made some huge adjustments to Northwestern’s defense. Everything went wrong for Indiana in the first half, and it certainly appeared to be one of its classic blowout losses away from Assembly Hall. Unfortunately, Indiana dug itself into far too much of a hole in the first half and fell short last night in Evanston.

Indiana also improved to 15-1 in-conference, staying atop the standings and leaving the team just one win away from capturing a share of the Big Ten regular season title. So, I think it was just the flow of the game was a little bit different.” Across a nearly six-minute span in the second quarter, the Hoosiers outscored the Wolverines 12-0 with Berger scoring or assisting on 10 of those points. “So, I just think they can score in bunches, and we watched it the other night versus Ohio State, and we watched it the first time that we played them. Holmes converted the and-1, and the Hoosiers got another stop, allowing the normally pass-first Moore-McNeil to find space beyond the arc pull up early in the shot clock herself. A few Michigan possessions later, Indiana graduate guard Grace Berger stole the ball and quickly fired an outlet pass to junior guard Chloe Moore-McNeil running down the court.
