The Boss hurled the sunburst single-cut across the stage to Kevin Buell, but the whole stunt was horribly misjudged.

Despite the pair’s familiarity with the move, it didn’t quite work out as they practiced. From stage movements to song transitions, the majority of shows are meticulously planned out and practiced. This flash of showmanship has been part of Springsteen’s set for years.

The setlist for the Boss' first Austin show since 2012 spans his storied career. We break down the stories.

He holed up in a rental cottage, searching for inspiration from the masters of 1950s and ‘60s rock & roll, and eventually, the song’s signature guitar riff came to him. Shows are free and open to the public. For a shot of old school Austin, you can catch the Hawaiian fusion act at ACL Live's intimate side venue. In late 2022, Springsteen released “Only the Strong Survive,” an album of Motown covers. The H-Town heavies are supported by a solid roster of Austin talent that includes Chakeeta B, Nook Turner and DJ Hella Yella. Over the next few weeks as he tried to process, he was haunted by the image of the rescuers who climbed the stairs of the towers as other people fled to safety. Songs from Springsteen’s 2020 album “Letter To You,” make up a good portion of the setlist for this tour. He heard the calling. Review: Bruce Springsteen at Houston's Toyota Center offers ... (Houston Chronicle)

Bruce Springsteen played numerous favorites from the '70s and some contemplative new songs at his first Houston show in six years.

Springsteen and the E Street Band offer a poised ferocity, smarts and sinew, a complex and delicate balance to strike. Overall, last night's show featured a spirited performance from Springsteen and the E Street Band. For all the hubbub about “escape” in his early work — the need to get out, to not surrender — we do reach a point where there is nowhere to go. The bright venue felt less like a space for an artist delivering art and more like a communal event full of shared energy: “Thunder Road,” “Born to Run,” “Rosalita,” “Glory Days,” “Dancing in the Dark” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.” If you can hold back songs like those until the end without the show suffering, why wouldn’t you? If you step back from the enormity and ubiquity of Springsteen’s career, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is a curious entity. “She’s the One” doesn’t need a DNA test to connect it to Bo Diddley and/or Buddy Holly. Last night's show sits somewhere in the upper half of the Springsteen shows I've seen, a mix of tight and sloppy, with spikes of energy and a few lulls. He took the rudiments of a music form and made them his own. The show had just a handful of these moments filled with heart and soul, if not complete control. But like kids with a ragged baseball, Springsteen and the band weren’t going to stop playing with it. This is the fairly traditional portion of the ritual of reviewing a Bruce Springsteen concert. It predates “Letter” by nearly 50 years, recorded by Springsteen as a demo in the early 1970s.

This left a lot of fans in uproar as mid-level seats were going in the range of $4,000-$5,000. He also represented the middle of three generations of his family who sat together. In a nutshell, price would be dictated by the algorithms of demand. And highlights included some of those Big Guns: a faith-driven “The Promised Land,” the Bo Diddley-beat of “She’s the One,” another trip to a symbolic church with the 9/11-themed “The Rising,” and the fist-pumping “Badlands.” Houston pops up occasionally in Springsteen lore: The city is mentioned in “Seeds.” And he often speaks fondly of the original band’s four-night stint at Liberty Hall in March 1974, now the subject of Springsteen: Liberty Hall, an upcoming book of concert and casual photography by Nicki Germaine, whose longtime partner is E Street bassist Garry W. The show hit the final stretch with the Super Big Guns. Of the E Street band, saxophonist Jake Clemons has grown into the Shoes of the Big Man, his uncle Clarence, but brings a lighter and more deft style of playing. But only Houstonians got to spend a specific Saint’s Day—Valentine’s in this case—with the Boss and his expansive gang of merry men and women on the first leg of their current U.S. The core band was augmented by a four-man horn section, four backup vocalists, and an added percussionist. And while they certainly have their adherents among Spring-Nuts, “Prove It All Night” lacked for the passion of delivery and “Kitty’s Back” remains an overextended piece. A much slimmed-down Van Zandt got in some nice, stinging solos, and 71-year-old “Mighty” Max Weinberg put in the evening’s No. His last two albums of newer music were also represented: The elegiac but still forceful medication on death, loss, and passing of time Letter to You.
