The Jets are a bit restricted in terms of salary-cap space at the moment, so there are some potential holdups here, but it’s not hard to see how Carr could view them as an option to refresh his career. He is now able to canvas the other 31 teams to find his next home and negotiate his next contract.

Derek Carr released by Raiders after 9 years. Where will QB land ... (USA TODAY)

Both Derek Carr and the Raiders are seeking a fresh start in 2023, as the two sides will part ways after the QB refused to waive his no-trade clause.

He's also going to be looking for a team that is also looking for a quarterback that has a reputation for game-winning drives and fourth-quarterback comebacks. He never called out a coach, never called out the organization, never called out the top brass in the organization, never said anything. The Raiders, who pick seventh overall in the draft, could target a quarterback at that spot. "And he's going to look for teams that have a stable situation between their head coach and their ownership. Also, coach Ron Rivera admitted during the season that the quarterback position was holding this team back – a comment he later walked back despite the truth in it, not to mention Rivera's own culpability. Winning a championship is what I've always wanted and what I will continue to work towards." A return to the Bay Area might be a high upside move for Carr, assuming the Niners like the idea of adding a veteran option as Jimmy Garoppolo prepares to move on. He was not willing to extend the deadline to facilitate a move. He is a true professional and we appreciate his hard work in striving to produce the results we all desire. But it would also be a gamble given it's unlikely Carr would be guaranteed the opportunity to start. ► Atlanta Falcons: They'll pick eighth in the draft's first round, hardly a guarantee they'll get a top QB prospect. Carr, who did not have a farewell news conference, posted a goodbye to Raiders fans on social media following the regular season.

Raiders release Derek Carr (The Daily Nonpareil)

The Las Vegas Raiders have released quarterback Derek Carr. The move was expected after Carr was benched with two games remaining this season.

The 68-year-old Caldwell brings a wealth of NFL experience, having coached the Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts. He also worked as an assistant defensive backs/quality control coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2014-17 and held the same position with the Tennessee Titans from 2012-13. Arizona also is potentially looking at a roster overhaul with roughly 30 unrestricted free agents and the retirement of three-time NFL defensive player of the year J.J. 2 defense this season and the third-most sacks in NFL history with 78 under Gannon in 2022. Las Vegas tried to work out a trade with the New Orleans Saints, and Carr visited the team last week. “We felt Shane had a lot of that offensive magic that can be hard to find, knowing we’re going to have a young quarterback to develop,” Irsay said. The Eagles lost to Kansas City 38-35 at State Farm Stadium, home of the Cardinals. Philadelphia led the NFL with 70 sacks this season — 15 more than any other team. “This is the tough part of this business. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to comment publicly. Gannon replaces Kliff Kingsbury, who was fired last month after going 4-13 in his fourth season. By releasing Carr, the Raiders' salary dead cap hit will be $5.6 million next season.

Blaine Gabbert, who is a free agent, and Kyle Trask, who Tampa Bay drafted in the second round of the This could just mean that Carr wanted to take some time to assess his options, but the relationship between Carr and Allen seems to be a card in New Orleans’ favor. In fact, the moves that the organization might make to get under the cap could diminish that roster even more. With Tom Brady’s retirement, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a roster that just made the playoffs — yes, due in large part to the aforementioned down year in the NFC South — and a hole at the quarterback position. The Buccaneers have yet to hire an offensive coordinator, and Tampa Bay has a tough cap situation to navigate as well. Like what is going on?’ And come to find out all the cap problems and this and that and all the things that he had to try and work through, it’s tough. I mean, he gave me my chance in this league, and I’ve told him 100 times and I’ll tell him 100 more times how thankful I am for the chance that he not only drafted me, but to trust me when he asked me if I was ready to start. There is a reason that the Saints were first in the mix for Carr’s services this offseason, and it is head coach Dennis Allen. Howell showed flashes in limited action at the end of the season, enough to convince the organization that he deserved a shot. But Carr apparently did not waive his no-trade clause, and given that the team owes him a $40.4 million contract guarantee over the next two years if he is still on the roster after Wednesday, that means that in a few hours he will likely be released by Las Vegas. Several teams are in the market for quarterback upgrades this year, and quarterbacks such as Lamar Jackson, Daniel Jones, and Aaron Rodgers might be on the move.

However, the truth is that the lack of independence on the field is a core philosophy of Saleh’s. Certainly, one of the best passers of the modern era is going to want to be able to read and react at the line. Presumably, Hackett and LaFleur’s brother Matt were not telling Rodgers that he could not call his own plays or make changes at the line.

Derek Carr hits open market after release from Raiders (Boston.com)

After being benched to end the regular season, quarterback Derek Carr is now a free agent following his release from the Raiders, Tuesday.

The Raiders could even try to move up in the draft to try to secure Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Las Vegas could also try to draft its quarterback of the future, and with the No. The Raiders also hope to bring back Josh Jacobs, who led the NFL with 1,653 yards rushing. The Colts released Manning in 2012 and he went on to win a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos after the 2015 season. The knock on Carr was that he led the Raiders to just two playoff appearances and still is looking for his first postseason victory. His injury history would be a concern, but Garoppolo is 40-17 in his career with a Super Bowl appearance. Sending draft picks and/or players to Green Bay could make it difficult for Raiders management to build around Rodgers and improve on their 6-11 record. “I’m just looking for teams that have made that decision consistently that they’ll do whatever it takes to put a winning program out there,” Carr said Feb. “So for me, that’s just to win, win a championship. The Saints would need Carr to restructure his contract, but he already turned down that option last weekend. He is a true professional and we appreciate his hard work in striving to produce the results we all desire.” “This is the tough part of this business,” Younger wrote.

Derek Carr sweepstakes: Our odds on where the free-agent ... (NOLA.com)

Bet.NOLA.com has put together a list of possibilities on where the former Raider will be playing in 2023.

They are much more likely to go for a QB in the draft — someone like Kentucky’s Will Levis, if they can’t make a deal and move up for Young or Stroud. But the team has been terrible, and in a Sports Illustrated article, Carr said he had hoped to be drafted by the Texans but felt spurned when they passed on him with the 33rd pick (first of the second round) of the 2014 draft. Analysis: Read through the lines: It would be a huge surprise to see Carr go to Houston. In fact, it's an even bigger mess than the one Carr is leaving. Of all the teams on this list, except potentially New Orleans, the Jets have the best chance to win now. In other words, throughout history, the Saints just aren’t a team that drafts and develops a quarterback. That could mean he’d get a longer deal in New Orleans, but for much less in 2023 and 2024 than his potential of $40 million per. He would make life so much easier for a team that hasn’t had a quarterback it drafted start the majority of a season since Archie Manning in 1981. But Carr is the one who will generate the most headlines, and other than perhaps Garoppolo, likely gives his new team a chance to win right away. In a perfect world, this deal might have been already been signed the second he was let go from Vegas, but … Carr met with the Saints last week, had dinner in New Orleans and visited team facilities the next morning. I think the bigger question is whether Carr would want to go there.

Panthers emerge as favorites to land QB Derek Carr (Independent Tribune)

The quarterback carousel started up Tuesday, with Derek Carr officially on the market after his release from the Las Vegas Raiders.

Tampa Bay projects to be nearly $60 million over the salary cap after taking a $35 million dead-cap hit once Brady's retirement paperwork was filed. The Saints struggled in 2022 after Jameis Winston suffered a back injury and was demoted behind Andy Dalton once he returned. Carr, in turn, declined to waive his no-trade clause, forcing the Raiders to release him Tuesday before more than $40 million of his salary would become guaranteed. The Panthers are +140 favorites to be Carr's landing spot, with the New Orleans Saints right behind at +150. The Panthers tried Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold and P.J. 1 on the board as Carr's next team, SportsBetting.ag reported Tuesday.
