Dudley brothers felt 'unsafe' at Champions League final (BBC News)

Samad and Sahad Majid join a review into stadium standards at the Champions League final in 2022.

"I could see that my wheelchair wasn't going to get through. The match was delayed by 36 minutes. His brother, also from Dudley, said after the game started, an influx of fans and how it was policed "wasn't safe at all". "Because I was blocking the gate to get to the other turnstiles, people would actually have to climb over the wheelchair - it could cause a situation that was obviously quite dangerous." Samad Majid said that on arrival at the stadium, ahead of the biggest game in European club football, he was met by untrained staff at the turnstiles. The second of the brothers, Sahad Majid, said conditions at the Stade de France, Paris, were not safe "at all".

Champions League picks, predictions, odds: Experts split on PSG vs ... (CBSSports.com)

The massive Paris Saint-Germain vs. Bayern Munich clash highlights a fine slate, while Chelsea will look to right the ship and put their poor Premier League ...

Most likely to score a goal: Goals will be hard to come by in the match but singling out one person to find the back of the net, it's Joao Mario. Benfica will have chances all match due to Brugge's struggles as of late but Mignolet is a keeper that can stand on his head to save his defense. [In my bold predictions I make the case for why Chelsea might actually start scoring some goals](https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/champions-league-bold-predictions-chelsea-find-their-goals-bayern-munich-play-it-safe-a-surprise-champion/), but that is perhaps best saved for columns that include the very necessary "bold" in front of "predictions." Match prediction: Neither of these teams have particularly set the world alight in the last few months, but Chelsea in particular seem to have uncovered a heady cocktail of underwhelming performances and horrendous luck. Perhaps it is nothing more than the easy narrative but given his growth as his player, the attention that will be on him and how well suited his qualities are to Premier League opposition, does it not seem inevitable that Bellingham will shine the brightest? One matchup to watch: Jude Bellingham's drive and dynamism seems perfectly suited for a clash with a Chelsea midfield who might struggle to stay in the battle with the England international. Expect to see a focused and determined Christophe Galtier side raise their game by a few levels compared to some of the underwhelming displays they have produced of late. Man of the Match pick: Gianluigi Donnarumma has been in inspired form of late and it seems likely that the Italian will have to be at his absolute best if PSG are to have any hope of advancing to the Champions League quarterfinals. The Cameroon international has hit impressive form this season and it feels nailed on that he will find the net again here across the two legs in this tie. In fact, the Rossoneri faced a tough start of the year and only had two wins since the World Cup break while conceding ten goals in the last four games (four against Lazio, five against Sassuolo and one against Inter Milan). I expect the game to be very tactical and he's the one who can make the difference. One matchup to watch: After a difficult start of the year, right-back Theo Hernandez has proven again to be one of the best players in his role, providing a nice assist to Olivier Giroud in Friday's clash against Torino.

Uefa had 'primary responsibility' for Champions League final chaos ... (The Guardian)

Uefa bears 'primary responsibility' for organisational and safety failures that made it 'remarkable' no Liverpool or Real Madrid fans died at the 2022 final ...

The panel is also troubled by a number of stark differences as to the facts of what happened, and a general default position of blaming the Liverpool supporters, without any proper evidential basis.” In a statement, the organisation did not say that it accepted the panel’s findings, saying it was “currently analysing” them “and assessing them against its own analysis of the organisation of the event and facts that occurred around it”. Uefa’s events arm “marginalised” the safety and security unit, and did not follow its own safety requirements, “a recipe for the failures” that occurred. The report also states the panel was “very disappointed” that Uefa asked that sections of an interview given by an unnamed senior Uefa executive, relating to evidence they gave to the French Senate, be redacted on the grounds of maintaining their anonymity. The risk of a crushing disaster was highest at that point, the panel found, as large numbers of supporters came on to the forecourt and found static queues. The second claim, that thousands of Liverpool fans were at the stadium without valid tickets, originated with the French police and ministers, and was given to the media by Uefa at the end of the match. The checkpoint increasingly failed to cope with the huge numbers of people crammed into the queue, and was abandoned at 7.45pm, the report states. [Liverpool](https://www.theguardian.com/football/liverpool) and thousands of their supporters, and in media reports, including the Guardian’s investigation. “The dangerous conditions on the concourse outside the turnstiles were compounded by the police deploying teargas at disorderly groups of locals, as well as using pepper spray on supporters trying to gain entrance with valid tickets,” the report states. Although a decision to delay kick-off should be taken by the acting police commander in liaison with Uefa’s safety and security unit and that of the local football association running the game, the report states, Ceferin himself made the decision, in a stairwell of the stadium’s VIP area, where he had been having a meeting with the king of Spain. The report states that there is no evidence to support such claims, which were made in a “reprehensible” attempt by the authorities to avoid responsibility. [Uefa](https://www.theguardian.com/football/uefa) review expresses concern that lessons have not been learned, saying with reference to the evidence of Michel Cadot, the French government official responsible for major sporting events: “Despite Mr Cadot’s willingness to accept that mistakes had been made [at the final], the panel is concerned that there remains a misconception about what actually happened and a complacency regarding what needs to change.

Their incompetence and negligence could have led to a far more serious situation had it not been for the restraint of the Liverpool supporters who know all about the history of what happened at Hillsborough in 1989. The real number of counterfeit Liverpool tickets turned out to be 1,600 - which is no more than usually expected for a game of that size. "It is now obvious that three months was not enough time to organise a Champions League final. Dr Rodrigues said last year in a UEFA statement: "The events of 28 May were distressing for everyone involved. The FFF didn't respond to messages for comment through email and its media website on Monday. "And they should apologise and thank Liverpool supporters for the way they behaved." UEFA as event owner has been assigned "primary responsibility" but it's understood some commission members disagreed with the conclusion. "Although the French police were out in force before the game, they were nowhere to be seen when supporters were being mugged and attacked as they were leaving the game. "The truth is that the real blame lies with UEFA, the French authorities and the French police. "A Champions League final should be a celebration of football but in Paris it turned into a nightmare for tens of thousands of supporters because of failures on the part of the people who were supposed to be looking after them. "What happened on 28 May 2022 was the fault of UEFA, the French authorities and the French police. "It's been over eight months of work by the independent panel and it is only right and proper to publish the contents of the report to our supporters appropriately.

It rather seems that they are, struggling to stay in the race for the playoffs in their domestic league and with just one win from their first seven games after the World Cup. The bigger questions for Frankfurt lie at the other end of the pitch and whether a defense that profiles as a middle-of-the-pack domestic backline can hold the likes of Victor Osimhen and Kvicha Kvaratskelia at bay. In a bid to stop the rot Stefano Pioli ditched the 4-2-3-1 in which the Rossoneri had performed so vibrantly on their way to the Serie A title but his new back three system does not appear to have room in it for his best player, Rafael Leao. They almost certainly won't be in the Champions League for us to find out. It might prove to be the case but there is one strong argument to be made in Liverpool's defense, particularly if Virgil van Dijk returns to anchor it at something approaching his best. [As Jonathan Johnson notes in his dissection of Les Parisiens' stuttering start to 2023,](https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/psg-is-a-world-cup-hangover-to-blame-for-kylian-mbappe-injury-neymar-inconsistency-and-club-struggles/) this is a team who seem to be in a sluggish mood. They may not be sidelined for the games against Liverpool but they might not be back to peak performance either. This is not a side with great recent pedigree in this competition, one that rather emerged from nowhere at the start of the season, fully formed as a runaway Serie A champion. Bar Rodri, the midfield seems to be in a state of permanent flux, Phil Foden's form has slowed and the backline could be reliant on consistency from Rico Lewis, 18. What could go on to define their tournament is the form of their defense, an impressive mix of veterans such as Nicolas Otamendi and Odisseas Vlachodimos with the brilliant young talent Antonio Silva. There is plenty of time between now and the final in Istanbul, though, and here is how we rank the teams as the return of European football's biggest prize looms large: A 2003 or 2012, a year when so many of the so-called big teams do not quite pass muster and a surprise package sweeps in to claim it all.

What the January window could mean for the 2022-23 Champions ... (U.S. National Soccer Players)

Clemente Lisi on January spending and the 2022-23 Champions League knockout rounds, specifically for Premier League clubs Chelsea and Liverpool.

How much the decisions on transfer spending impact what happens on the field in the coming weeks and months in Europe’s premier club competition is part of the annual story. Chelsea is building for the future with an eye towards 2023-24, but they will also be playing to win in Europe this season while trying to move up the table in the Premier League. Since the Champions League is at the knockout stage, anything can happen. While they’ve gone four games without a win in the Premier League, they should not be underestimated at European level. As a result, striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was also left off the UCL roster in order to make room for the bevy of new stars the team signed over the past few weeks. The rematch of that final against Real Madrid should be a combative affair. While the knockout stage of the UCL is always a riveting and tense part of the season, the list of new names and players who have changed teams will likely make it even more interesting than usual. Like Fernandez, Felix and Mudryk are expected to ignite Chelsea’s attack and score the goals needed to go far in the competition. The now-former Benfica player was purchased by Chelsea on January 31, on the final day of the January window, and could very well be instrumental for the team both in the Premier League and in the UCL. [Clemente Lisi](https://ussoccerplayers.com/author/clemente-lisi) – NEW YORK, NY (Feb 13, 2023) US Soccer Players – The recently concluded window will have a huge impact on the second half of the club season across Europe’s domestic leagues. Since the 2018-19 season, it no longer matters whether those players had already played in the competition for another club. That has made the winter transfer window an even bigger deal as the past few weeks have proven.

PSG season defined by Champions League clashes vs. Bayern (ESPN)

PSG fans have been waiting for this super-powered team to show their best. It's not happened yet, but playing Bayern is the perfect opportunity.

Football is often unpredictable and a team with Messi, Neymar and Mbappe can never be an outsider but right now, it's hard to say that Bayern Munich are not the favourites. The French club aspire to become like Bayern both domestically and in Europe when it comes to football power and financial power. For now, Bayern are in town and the history between the two clubs is a reminder that the German giants are both the example, and the nemesis, for PSG. It said UEFA’s president, Aleksander Ceferin, was asked to make a call on delaying the kickoff even though he had not been in the match control room or in contact with security officials; he had been in a meeting with the King of Spain in a V.I.P. “Unfortunately, the enthusiasm around the game rapidly turned into a real ‘near miss’ which was harmful to a significant number of fans from both clubs,” the report said. The report raised new concerns about security preparations for next year’s Summer Olympics in Paris, with its authors describing events around the Champions League final as a “wake-up call” for Olympic organizers. That no lives were lost in the crushes outside the stadium gates, the investigators’ harshly critical report concluded, was only “a matter of chance.” Dangerous bottlenecks, packed entrances and ramps, and tear gas employed by the police — sometimes sprayed indiscriminately at groups of supporters that included children and disabled fans — added to the chaos. The investigation involved hundreds of interviews and the analysis of footage, including many hours of video shot by supporters caught up in the crushes as they tried to enter the stadium.

Bayern is also in contention for the DFB Pokal after making easy work against Mainz in the Round of 16 with a 5-0 victory. With the current form that both teams have, Bayern looks to be the much better squad as they still hold tight to their unbeaten run. With the arrival of Joao Cancelo from Manchester City, who is considered as Europe’s most positionally versatile defender, Nagelsmann hopes to produce more outputs on the pitch. Christophe Galtier’s side will look for a chance to lift the Champions League trophy and give back the glory to France. For starters, anywhere between one and three of PSG’s fabled attacking trident could take the pitch on home ground with question marks hovering over the statuses of both Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi. PSG are top of the Ligue 1 table, picking up 54 points and a five-point buffer over second-placed Marseille.

They have been ruthless this season, and I think that will be the difference here. Die Adler was the only team in this season’s Champions League to partake in the competition for the first time in the the UCL era. Fighting for a UCL spot in the Bundesliga, Frankfurt will be motivated for their meeting with Napoli. They are the only side left in the Champions League to have played in the qualifying rounds. This time around, the Italians have to be considered favourites. Goals are not hard to come by for Napoli, who have already scored 76 times at the time of writing. Even qualifying for the Champions League via the league for next year is looking unfavourable for Jürgen Klopp’s men. [going on another spending spree in January](https://playingfor90.com/2023/01/11/chelsea-land-joao-felix-loan/), the Blues have won just once this calendar year (1-4-3). Chelsea has more to lose here, as it is looking increasingly likely that a third Champions League triumph is the Blues’ only way back to the tournament next season. Despite both teams being regulars in Europe, this is the first time Club Brugge and Benfica will meet in UEFA club competition. For that, I will have to go with the Parisians in this one. In what promises to be a highly entertaining two legs, it is difficult to say who will progress from this one.

Champions League Odds: AC Milan vs. Tottenham prediction, pick ... (ClutchPoints)

Join us as we jumpstart our Champions League odds series, where we make our AC Milan-Tottenham prediction and pick.

However, with some advantage in the midfield and forward positions, the visitors look as slight favorites to win this match. This turned out to be a forgettable afternoon for the London club as they failed to build a winning streak after a previous 1-0 victory over Manchester City. The Milan boss will be motivated to bring back the Champions League silverware to the Rossoneri, who last won it in 2007 in a team that featured Kaka, Filippo Inzaghi, Clarence Seedorf, Paolo Maldini, and Andrea Pirlo. Tuesday’s meeting with Tottenham will represent the club’s first Champions League knockout round tie since their 5-1 aggregate loss to Atletico Madrid way back in the 2013-14 season. They currently sit fifth in the Serie A table, tied at 41 points with Atalanta and Roma, three points behind Inter, and 18 points behind leaders Napoli. The Tottenham Hotspurs will be quickly looking for good results after a mixed run of outcomes in the English Premier League.

The Mancunian’s have still yet to win the competition despite having qualified for the competition in the past 12 seasons. Despite a slow climb up the Bundesliga table to their current sixth position, Eintracht are one of the weaker sides in the last 16 of the competition with Kolo Muani the great threat for the 2022 Europa League champions. FC Porto have won nine straight matches and have just conceded three goals since the start of December and haven’t lost since 21 October and they’re just five points off first place but will struggle against the Serie A giants. The Champions League offers the only hope of silverware for ‘Blues’ fans this season as the side still languish in midtable. Tottenham remain a hit-miss side under Antonio Conte and go from the high of beating Manchester City to a humbling defeat at Leicester with the 4-1 scoreline being the Italian coach’s most humbling in his time in english football. UEFA regulations only allow registering three new players per team so Graham Potter opted for Enzo Fernández, Mudryk and João Félix from the plethora of new acquisitions to join the London side over the winter transfer window. The excitement starts Tuesday, and Corner Picks has a pick for each of this week's matches. All odds courtesy of Caesars Sportsbook. PSG vs. Bayern Munich. Date ...

The Pick: Benfica (-116) The Pick: Chelsea (+195) The Pick: Over 2.5 (+110) Benfica won their Champions League group, which included PSG and Juventus. Not only is Club Brugge the only club from outside Europe's top six leagues remaining in the tournament, but they're not even in first place in Belgium's Jupiler Pro League. This isn't to say Dortmund can't win this match (they very much can), but there's been a little too much of an overreaction to Chelsea's struggles, and while the results aren't there, Chelsea have looked better lately. The Pick: Bayern Munich (+150) It won't be easy to go to Les Parc de Princes and get the win, but I expect that's just what Bayern will do. Of the eight quarterfinal matchups, this is your headliner. Toss in a wild card like Napoli, and this could be one of the more surprising Champions League tournaments in recent memory. AC Milan and Inter have little hope of winning Serie A and instead will have to fight to maintain a top-four finish for themselves. It's not just the long lay-off due to the World Cup; it's that some of the big-name clubs we're used to seeing make this part of the tournament aren't having the best years at home.
