Greg Abbott says he backs legislation banning transgender college ... (Texas Tribune)

In 2021, Texas passed a law barring transgender student athletes from playing on K-12 school sports teams that align with their gender identity.

[passed legislation](https://www.texastribune.org/2021/10/25/texas-transgender-students-sports/) in 2021 that restricted transgender student athletes from playing on K-12 school sports teams that align with their gender. The 2021 legislation around K-12 sports prompted amendments to rules from the University Interscholastic League, which governs primary and secondary school sports in Texas. Financial supporters play no role in the Tribune’s journalism. This session, conservatives are also trying to criminalize types of gender-affirming care for minors and restrict lessons about sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools. The bills restricting transgender college athletes could open the door to a political fight. “This next session, we will pass a law prohibiting biological men to compete against women in college sports,” Abbott said at the Young America’s Foundation Freedom conference in Dallas.

Bally's Bankruptcy leaves MLB's broadcast rights, revenue stream ... (Bless You Boys)

The immediate future of broadcast rights for 14 major league baseball teams, including the Detroit Tigers, is up in the air as Diamond Sports group is ...

A loss of local broadcast revenue would be felt hardest by those teams that have unpaid contracts with Sinclair, but since 48 percent of local revenues are shared among all clubs, the blow would be softened somewhat for those teams and felt somewhat by all teams. Detroit struck a new deal with Bally Sports Detroit that began with the 2022 season, and included streaming rights. MLB has refused to include digital rights in the contracts with RSN’s, but the Detroit Tigers are an exception. The company holds the local broadcast rights to 14 major league baseball clubs, 12 national hockey league clubs, and 16 NBA teams. Diamond is owned by Sinclair broadcasting, who purchased 21 Regional Sports Networks (RSN’s) that hold the rights to 42 major professional sports teams from Disney for $10.6 billion. [Detroit Tigers](https://www.blessyouboys.com/), is up in the air as Diamond Sports group is expected to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy this week.

Bally Sports Southwest Bankruptcy Not Likely to Interrupt DFW ... (NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth)

When Bally Sports Southwest likely files bankruptcy next month, it's not expected to interrupt DFW sports broadcasts, including Dallas Mavericks games.

The company is struggling under the weight of $8.4 billion in debt, according to Outside of the NFL, most major pro sports are broadcast on regional networks that pay top dollar for the rights to air the games. So, if you don’t have that subscriber money coming in then of course the ability to sustain those rights fees back to the teams becomes much more difficult,” Brown said. The cable companies that pay to air the games generate most of their revenue from subscriber fees. “For most people, if they have a cable provider, they get their sports interspersed with other things. In the short term, experts predict that fans will still be able to watch their teams’ games on the channel they are familiar with.

Financial distress of Bally Sports' parent company could impact ... (STLtoday.com)

Restructuring or bankruptcy seems likely for the company that runs 19 regional sports networks under the Bally brand name.

“The migration of sports fans from cable TV packages to streaming services has clearly been an inevitable trend that we know will force a seismic shift in the business model of all sports teams engaged with local broadcast partners,” Blues president and CEO said Chris Zimmerman said. 1 goal in terms of preparations is that if for some reason Diamond isn’t broadcasting, that we want to be in a position to make sure our fans are going to get their games.” “In a not too long period of time it’s going to be a different delivery system where everyone will have an opportunity to watch Cardinals baseball,” DeWitt Jr. “It’s something we have to be cognizant of.” “The biggest problem for us on the (regional networks) side is that, even within the cable bundle — particularly with the Diamond subsidiary — is that their reach, within the bundle, is not what it used to be. There is a major financial stake for teams, especially ones such as the Cardinals — who are in the middle of a 15-year, $1.1 billion deal they have for their TV/streaming rights. “I think you should assume that if Diamond doesn’t broadcast, we’ll be in a position to step in,” Manfred said Thursday. It’s important for us to develop digital products that allow us to get to our fans in a frictionless way. The Bloomberg report said that Sinclair is expected to fail to make $140 million in interest payments due soon, which would be “kickstarting a 30-day grace period” in which it could try to renegotiate deals or file for bankruptcy. Possible developments range from the status quo, with Cardinals and Blues contests continuing to be available on the cable, satellite and streaming services on which they currently appear, or to a chaotic situation in which there could be a free-for-all to see where they land. They are under the umbrella of Diamond Sports Group, which is part of the Sinclair Broadcasting conglomerate that has deals with MLB, NHL and NBA teams to televise games. “This is a situation we have been monitoring for a long time.

MLB will “step in” to broadcast games if Bally Sports RSNs go ... (SportsPro Media)

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has said the league will make games available on cable and digital if DSG goes bankrupt.

“What we do is largely dependent on how Diamond and the creditors play their cards, what they decide to do,” continued Manfred. “This year they kind of got a deadline,” he said. It is currently unclear if either of those leagues will make games available via digital and cable should Diamond be unable to. As of 30th September, DSG has about US$585 million in cash on hand but owes about US$2 billion in rights fees to sports teams this year.
