The NFL season comes to a close Sunday with the Eagles and Chiefs facing off in Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
The game will be televised nationally on FOX. Just as the Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are finalizing game plans, playmakers on both sides are wondering what shenanigans to pull on football’s biggest stage. These days, the players are free to show off their creativity as well — within reason, of course. And then, just seconds before the snap, Smith-Schuster will decide on his touchdown celebration. With the Eagles in the Super Bowl and Hurts as their starting quarterback, a player accustomed to the spotlight (he reached three national championships in college and was a Heisman Trophy finalist) is set to explode to a different level of public fame. The KC offense led the NFL in pass plays of at least 25 yards with 49 (11 more than the Eagles, who finished second). They are 6-3 straight up as underdogs, with two of the defeats in 2018 and the other against Buffalo in Week 6 this season. The road to the Super Bowl ended with Gardner Minshew taking a knee in the NFC Championship Game. If you don’t count the preseason, it all started with a Kyzir White tackle for loss on a Jared Goff completion to D’Andre Swift in Week 1. And so, Sunday’s duel will serve as a reminder of the arduous, painful and at times bleak journey endured by Mahomes’ and Hurts’ forefathers. Their third-and-long conversion rate (42.9% percent, including the playoffs) is best in the NFL this year and the best for Kansas City in the Patrick Mahomes era. One Sunday back in late October, Steve Spagnuolo made a pilgrimage to one of his favorite bars, a corner spot at the corner of 11th Street and McKean in the heart of South Philadelphia.

[Dallas Cowboys](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/DAL/dallas-cowboys/) on Christmas Eve, and don't expect him to snap that four-game streak on Sunday either. The reason for this is that Philadelphia is the only team in NFL history to have four players this year who all recorded at least 10 sacks in the regular season -- [Haason Reddick](/nfl/players/2001828/haason-reddick/) (16.0), [Javon Hargrave](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/2007634/javon-hargrave/) (11.0), [Brandon Graham](/nfl/players/1116725/brandon-graham/) (11.0) and [Josh Sweat](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/2179277/josh-sweat/) (11.0). Philadelphia's defense is well-equipped to slow down the hub of the Kansas City aerial attack given that they allow the fifth-lowest passer rating when passing to tight ends this season, 80.6, as well as what's tied for the fifth-fewest touchdowns allowed to opposing tight ends this season, three. This Eagles pass rush is going to at least tie that figure on Sunday, giving them at least a share of the all-time single-season sacks record, including the playoffs. Mahomes and the Chiefs, and I think they execute the plan en route to a second Super Bowl in five years. The Eagles need to get home with four rushers, and they need to do it a lot, or things could get dangerous. They avoid mistakes and they force mistakes, a potent combination - especially given the Chiefs relative inability (20th in the league) to force turnovers. They have skill at the appropriate positions to try and keep Mahomes' wizardry in check. And if you're hoping for a relatively comfortable Eagles win, akin to the games the Birds played all year long, I have bad news. The Eagles have jumped out to early leads and sat on them with the ground game. Jonathan Gannon needs to make sure Travis Kelce is the focal point in the passing game, and let the rest of the chips fall where they may. I think they will and I think the Eagles get it done. Thankfully that’s the Eagles’ specialty and a weakness for the Chiefs. They’ve been the best team in the league all season long. The Eagles are favored in this game for a reason. The Eagles are the better team.

The only thing I can say is that this has the potential to be one of the best Super Bowls in recent memory based on how talented and evenly matched these squads are. Despite the Eagles having a great pass defense, I think Patrick Mahomes sees plenty of success throwing to Travis Kelce across the middle where the Eagles are weak on defense. Forcing Hurts to go through his progressions while under pressure will be a winning formula for the Chiefs. The Chiefs’ offense will have a great game plan and execute at a high level with a “been there, done that” confidence. The Chiefs will be in for a battle but should pull out the victory and once again become Super Bowl champions. This will go a long way to taking away Hurts’ first read, which will give the K.C. The rookies in the secondary have the perfect moment to prove they are no longer rookies and make names for themselves that can be immortalized forever because of this game. I think the biggest factor in this game is the Eagles’ defense. The Eagles’ defense is known for its record-breaking pass rush and will be challenging for the Chiefs’ offensive line. I expect the Eagles’ defense to struggle a bit, even with all the good things they have going for them — a vaunted pass rush and a No. However, I think the pass rush will be able to get home at times with the four-man rush and the blitz game. Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback this Eagles’ defense will have faced all season by a longshot, even if he’s less than 100% due to the high ankle sprain.

With that in mind, here’s how the two starting quarterbacks fared in the regular season: Gilbert: No need to overcomplicate things, it’s quarterback driven league and so far in the playoffs this season the team whose starting quarterback posted a higher regular season QBR is 10-2. The Eagles are favored slightly so it’s not a shock to see us lean 6-2 towards Philadelphia. Raines): The Eagles were the last team to lose a game this season, falling 32-21 to Washington in Week 10 . In essentially a replay of the 2020 game, it's Philadelphia in a rout. This time it's that PHI d-line because they've done it to everyone all year, to the tune of a 11.5 percent (!) sack rate.
