The Sixers are taking a swing on a long and athletic but similarly light-shooting wing to Thybulle. There are tools to work with but it will be interesting to see if McDaniels will have any path toward meaningful playing time, moving from a rebuilding team in Charlotte to a franchise with current title aspirations in Philly. He had the best on-court net rating of all rotation players besides Embiid and the best defensive rating of all rotation players. Thybulle’s defense can be a bit high-risk, high-reward, but he does possess the ability to change the outlook of a game by creating havoc with steals and blocks. Thybulle’s lack of offense — he’s averaging 2.7 points per game — is always a consideration for the playoffs, during which opposing defenses tend to leave him open on the 3-point line to make life harder on [Joel Embiid](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/joel-embiid-jcKI7IrySH9vZuXQ/).

The Sixers aren't expected to make a massive move before the deadline, but they could tinker with their roster.

Thybulle has experienced uncertainty before as his name was mentioned during the two previous NBA trade deadlines. So, after the Mavs finally balked, the Sixers turned their attention to finalizing a deal with Charlotte and landed Jalen McDaniels. As for the luxury tax apron, [Spotrac](https://www.spotrac.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/cap/) now has the Sixers at approximately $8 million below the hard cap. [As Derek Bodner detailed in his Daily Six newsletter](https://www.dailysix.com/matisse-thybulle-for-jalen-mcdaniels-what-you-need-to-know/?ref=news-explainers-newsletter), the Sixers will therefore avoid the repeater tax next year. The Sixers had little choice but to trade Matisse Thybulle (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

The player the Sixers drafted four years ago was, for the most part, the player they still had.

With Harden a potential free agent and Embiid growing restless, it’s impossible to predict the changes another third-place finish might bring. Last postseason, opposing defenders made a habit of ignoring Thybulle even when he had the ball. For a player as entertaining and visible as Thybulle was during his Sixers tenure, his departure feels somewhat anticlimactic. The combination of James Harden and Joel Embiid has looked as potent as anybody could have hoped. They are a deeper and more sensible team than they were last season. Like Thybulle, McDaniels brings much of his value on the defensive end. He isn’t a great offensive player, but he is an active one, and capable enough that he can command his fair share of a defense’s attention. In a lot of ways, McDaniels is the type of player that the Sixers thought Thybulle had a decent chance of becoming. The player the Sixers drafted four years ago was, for the most part, the player they still had. With restricted free agency looming, the only thing the Sixers had to gain by keeping him past Thursday’s trade deadline was the right to match any contract offer he received. It’s simply a reality that Daryl Morey and Doc Rivers needed to face as they make their final preparations for this year’s playoff run. The one that rings truest is the reason he’s gone.

With players such as Jae Crowder (five), Gary Payton II (five), Thomas Bryant (three) and Bones Hyland (two) all commanding multiple second-round picks in trades, the Sixers didn't have the draft ammunition to make a big splash. They had already traded away their 2025 and 2026 second-round picks, and they can't trade their 2027 and 2028 second-rounders since they're part of the conditions tied to the 2025 and 2027 first-rounders they owe to OKC and Brooklyn, respectively. They had the 2023 Hornets second-rounder (which they included in Thursday's deal) and a 2029 second-round pick to offer. Their loss to the depleted Boston Celtics on Wednesday highlighted just how much room they still have to make up against the East's top two teams. All salary information via [Spotrac](http://www.spotrac.com/) or [RealGM](https://basketball.realgm.com/). Thanks to the Stepien Rule, which prevents teams from going back-to-back drafts without a first-round pick, the Sixers could only offer a 2024 first-round swap and a conditional 2029 first-rounder. The Sixers entered Thursday [ranked 25th leaguewide](https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced?DateTo=02%2F08%2F2023) in total rebound percentage and 26th in offensive rebound percentage, the latter of which has been an issue for them throughout head coach Doc Rivers' entire tenure. Since they were taxpayers in each of the past two seasons as well, they would have become subject to the Since veteran-minimum contracts prorate based on how much of the season is left, they should have plenty of room under the tax line to fill their 15th empty spot with a free-agent signing. In doing so, they accomplished two of their goals simultaneously: ducking below the NBA's luxury-tax line and rounding out their rotation with a more balanced player who could factor into their playoff rotation. The Sixers now sit roughly $1.27 million below the tax line. McDaniels averaged a career-high 10.6 points per game this year with the Hornets, albeit on a career-low 44.7 percent shooting overall and 32.2 percent from deep.

Sixers at NBA trade deadline: Swapping Matisse Thybulle for Jalen ... (The Athletic)

And to get there while also landing McDaniels, the Sixers unloaded their best trade asset (Thybulle) and pick (Charlotte second-rounder). Outside of spot-ups, McDaniels’ next two highest situations were in transition (28.8 percent of his offense, a high number) and as a pick-and-roll ballhandler. Perhaps McDaniels, a lengthy and switchable defender, could give the Sixers another option if they decide to return to a backup unit that deploys Tucker at center and features Harden. For the Sixers, McDaniels could fit into a variety of roles. And moving forward, the Sixers will not be subject to the more expensive repeater tax next season if they are a tax-paying team next season. While McDaniels doesn’t quite bring the same level of defense as Thybulle, McDaniels is a better defensive rebounder and has better ball skills. It certainly didn’t matter to the coaching staff, who cut Thybulle’s minutes in half as the final member of a 10-man rotation. 1, used Thybulle in a zone or to guard a specific player, hoping to stop or alter the opponent’s approach.

The Sixers will claim that they made enough of their years of asset-collection to flip one here, there and everywhere to begin a nice collection of 50-win seasons. Once considered such a prize that the Sixers just had to maneuver up in the draft to acquire his rights from Boston, Thybulle had a nice, complete four-year career at the University of Washington and a 6-11 wingspan. Known as The Process, the idea was to win through the draft, a clever sales strategy to fool a generation of idiots brainwashed during the golden age of rotisserie sports. By the time the Sixers finally unloaded him at the trade deadline Thursday for a player of similar skill taken 32 picks later in the same draft, Thybulle had wasted nearly four seasons trying to reach offensive mediocrity.
