Buyout market matters again for Sixers following Matisse Thybulle ... (NBC Sports)

After Daryl Morey made one move before Thursday's trade deadline, there's again a spotlight on how he and the Sixers will handle the buyout market.

As for the luxury tax apron, [Spotrac](https://www.spotrac.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/cap/) now has the Sixers at approximately $8 million below the hard cap. [As Derek Bodner detailed in his Daily Six newsletter](https://www.dailysix.com/matisse-thybulle-for-jalen-mcdaniels-what-you-need-to-know/?ref=news-explainers-newsletter), the Sixers will therefore avoid the repeater tax next year. [ landing James Harden](https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/sixers/james-harden-trade-sixers-ben-simmons-nets-joel-embiid-doc-rivers-nba-daryl-morey), the Sixers never appeared at all likely to have that kind of deadline. While Morey and head coach Doc Rivers were complimentary of Thybulle at [ last year’s end-of-season press conference](https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/sixers/daryl-morey-doc-rivers-press-conference-sixers-tyrese-maxey-nba-offseason-2022), Morey’s comment that the playoffs are “challenging” for “extreme one-way type of players” was telling. Sixers Duck Luxury Tax, Round Out Rotation With Matisse Thybulle ... (Forbes)

With players such as Jae Crowder (five), Gary Payton II (five), Thomas Bryant (three) and Bones Hyland (two) all commanding multiple second-round picks in trades, the Sixers didn't have the draft ammunition to make a big splash. They had already traded away their 2025 and 2026 second-round picks, and they can't trade their 2027 and 2028 second-rounders since they're part of the conditions tied to the 2025 and 2027 first-rounders they owe to OKC and Brooklyn, respectively. They had the 2023 Hornets second-rounder (which they included in Thursday's deal) and a 2029 second-round pick to offer. Their loss to the depleted Boston Celtics on Wednesday highlighted just how much room they still have to make up against the East's top two teams. All salary information via [Spotrac](http://www.spotrac.com/) or [RealGM](https://basketball.realgm.com/). Thanks to the Stepien Rule, which prevents teams from going back-to-back drafts without a first-round pick, the Sixers could only offer a 2024 first-round swap and a conditional 2029 first-rounder. The Sixers entered Thursday [ranked 25th leaguewide](https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced?DateTo=02%2F08%2F2023) in total rebound percentage and 26th in offensive rebound percentage, the latter of which has been an issue for them throughout head coach Doc Rivers' entire tenure. Since they were taxpayers in each of the past two seasons as well, they would have become subject to the Since veteran-minimum contracts prorate based on how much of the season is left, they should have plenty of room under the tax line to fill their 15th empty spot with a free-agent signing. In doing so, they accomplished two of their goals simultaneously: ducking below the NBA's luxury-tax line and rounding out their rotation with a more balanced player who could factor into their playoff rotation. The Sixers now sit roughly $1.27 million below the tax line. McDaniels averaged a career-high 10.6 points per game this year with the Hornets, albeit on a career-low 44.7 percent shooting overall and 32.2 percent from deep.

Sixers grades for Matisse Thybulle-Jalen McDaniels swap (ClutchPoints)

Another hectic, eventful NBA trade deadline is now over. The Philadelphia 76ers ended up making just one move, which was centered around a swap of Matisse ...

If McDaniels isn’t a big upgrade and they still fail to fix the backup center issue, Philly may have wasted its best chance in years to make a deep playoff run. The good news for the Sixers is that the Eastern Conference playoff picture didn’t get that much tougher. On paper, the Sixers got a potential upgrade off the bench and got more second-round picks to use in future trades. Refusing to add a single center in the buyout market would be a team building malpractice. When there were rumors that the team was looking to add another backup alongside Montrezl Harrell and Paul Reed, fans were ecstatic. Still, Mo Bamba was traded for only Patrick Beverley (who was waived) and a second-round pick. He apologized to them afterward and seemingly took responsibility for his behavior during the pre-draft process. The Sixers should see plenty of names in the buyout market with the likes of Nerlens Noel, Serge Ibaka, Khem Birch potentially up for grabs. The move got them [below the luxury tax threshold](https://www.libertyballers.com/2023/1/17/23506715/repeater-tax-could-affect-how-sixers-approach-trade-deadline-daryl-morey-josh-harris?_ga=2.214694674.447171560.1675978104-347070200.1675889020&_gl=1*uvhzxo*_ga*MzQ3MDcwMjAwLjE2NzU4ODkwMjA.*_ga_2M5GYNY1YS*MTY3NTk4MDM1MS4zLjEuMTY3NTk4MDM2Ni40NS4wLjA.), avoiding that tax and the repeat offender tax. The Sixers’ rotation will seemingly stay the same with a simple swap involving two defensive-minded wings. The Philadelphia 76ers ended up making just one move, which was centered around a swap of Matisse Thybulle for Jalen McDaniels. However, McDaniels is far from a home run.

Sixers at NBA trade deadline: Swapping Matisse Thybulle for Jalen ... (The Athletic)

McDaniels is a long, more conventional wing, a better defensive rebounder and has better ball skills than Thybulle.

[DeAndre Jordan](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/deandre-jordan-BkA31l5Cdkm6aW3U/)) on the buyout market in recent seasons. [Danuel House Jr.](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/danuel-house-jr-874laSnGlaoQ4Fd3/) in the rotation. Thybulle played on the Sixers’ second unit, some with an all-bench look and some with Harden and [Tobias Harris](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/tobias-harris-UpRf034bQRbHK4vT/) leading those lineups. And to get there while also landing McDaniels, the Sixers unloaded their best trade asset (Thybulle) and pick (Charlotte second-rounder). Outside of spot-ups, McDaniels’ next two highest situations were in transition (28.8 percent of his offense, a high number) and as a pick-and-roll ballhandler. Perhaps McDaniels, a lengthy and switchable defender, could give the Sixers another option if they decide to return to a backup unit that deploys Tucker at center and features Harden. [Gabe Vincent](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/gabe-vincent-Y9l1aCpQq6Y3j7qJ/), its smallest defender, on Thybulle and the Sixers responded by putting Thybulle in the dunker spot, where he struggled to score. For the Sixers, McDaniels could fit into a variety of roles. And moving forward, the Sixers will not be subject to the more expensive repeater tax next season if they are a tax-paying team next season. While McDaniels doesn’t quite bring the same level of defense as Thybulle, McDaniels is a better defensive rebounder and has better ball skills. It certainly didn’t matter to the coaching staff, who cut Thybulle’s minutes in half as the final member of a 10-man rotation. 1, used Thybulle in a zone or to guard a specific player, hoping to stop or alter the opponent’s approach.

76ers upgrade wing depth in big way with Jalen McDaniels trade (The Sixer Sense)

The Philadelphia 76ers made some noise at the trade deadline by acquiring Hornets wing Jalen McDaniels in a three-team trade involving Matisse Thybulle.

He’s the same age as Thybulle and is similarly in the final season of his rookie contract (McDaniels, a former second-round pick, will enter unrestricted free agency, whereas Thybulle will be a restricted free agent). He can slide between the 3 and 4 spots and one has to imagine he will spend a lot of time next to P.J. While not a great shooter, McDaniels is shooting a respectable enough 32.2 percent on 3.6 attempts per game from deep. That said, McDaniels is the better overall player and he should immediately take over a significant role with the second unit. In McDaniels, the Sixers receive a 25-year-old wing from Charlotte who can help paper over Thybulle’s absence defensively while providing much more on the offensive end. When the Sixers pulled the trigger on moving Matisse Thybulle and acquiring Jalen McDaniels as part of a three-team deal, there wasn't much fanfare.

And while he doesn’t have the gaudy numbers of Thybulle, McDaniels is in the 90th percentile in blocks and 87th in steals for his position this season. A lot of his shots were very difficult playing with the [Hornets] and with Joel [Embiid] and James [Harden} both bringing attention and great passing, the offensive side will be a lot easier for him.” McDaniels had his most efficient shooting season, hitting 38 percent of his threes and shooting 48.4 percent from the field overall. Time will tell if he gets that with the Sixers. Last season, the best of his career, he was in the 80th percentile for both offensive and defensive rebounding among wings, per Cleaning the Glass. And then offensively, I know Doc [Rivers] was just talking to him, the game will be a lot easier for him. He doesn’t rack up the stocks in bunches like Thybulle. As mentioned the stats aren’t going to excite you. And we feel like Jalen’s a player like that. “Sometimes when teams struggle that much, there are players in there that really just need an opportunity to show what they can do on a better team. He offensive struggles in the postseason were unfortunately just as notable. During his time in Charlotte, the team went 114-161 with one play-in game (that did not go well).
