Clippers acquire Bones Hyland from Nuggets: Report (The Athletic)

The Denver Nuggets are trading guard Bones Hyland to the Clippers, according to a report from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Here's what you need to know:.

Hyland also worked out with Clippers starting power forward [Marcus Morris Sr.](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/marcus-morris-sr-Kaurav0ZYZW2aYzm/) before the draft. [Denver Nuggets](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/nuggets/) traded guard [Bones Hyland](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/bones-hyland-QGlV1HRXs9r51UN5/) to the [Clippers](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/clippers/) as part of a four-team deal that also included the [Los Angeles Lakers](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/lakers/) and [Orlando Magic](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/magic/). Things flamed out with Hyland in Denver despite an All-Rookie season last year and a Rising Stars selection this year. That is: a combo guard with some point guard size and training, but one that is more comfortable as a shoot-first player than a true half-court facilitator. The Clippers consolidated their two veteran point guards in 26 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Just the other day we posted a poll of players Nuggets fans would like Denver to target in a potential Hyland deal. Two second round picks certainly doesn’t do the Nuggets any good for this season, unless they are able to flip those for a contributor before the deadline concludes. On the surface, this doesn’t seem like a great move for Denver as they move on from Hyland after just one season in which he showed some promise as a talented scorer.

NBA trade deadline: Clippers getting Bones Hyland from Nuggets (ClutchPoints)

The Los Angeles Clippers are trading for Denver Nuggets guard Bones Hyland and will send draft picks in return.

With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George finally healthy and hopefully a couple of new additions by the end of the trade deadline, this team is certainly trending in the right direction. LA has also been linked to Russell Westbrook, who is also nearing a buyout with the Utah Jazz following Wednesday’s trade. In 2022-23, the former VCU standout is averaging 12.1 points, three assists, and 2.1 rebounds per night with a 28% usage rate, basically serving as the star of the second unit.

It’s rare to see two contenders making a deal at the deadline, but this will elevate the Clippers slightly in betting circles. The Nuggets are getting two second-round picks back in the deal. Hyland never quite got going in Denver and will likely be buried in this rotation as well unless there’s another move.

NBA trade deadline: Why the Nuggets moved Bones Hyland ... (The Denver Post)

The Denver Nuggets made two trades on the NBA trade deadline, picking up Thomas Bryant in one move and sending away Bones Hyland in another.

Alongside Hyland in the backcourt, Murray was forced to guard the more dangerous offensive threat of the two because of Hyland’s defensive lapses, which was a source of frustration for Murray, a source said. When the Lakers landed De’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley, and Jarred Vanderbilt in a trade with Utah and Minnesota, that opened the door for the Nuggets to snag Bryant. By trading Hyland the Nuggets got rid of a player who didn’t align with Denver’s title goals. Following that game, the Nuggets went on a three-game road swing that began with a trip to New Orleans. Numerous veterans were frustrated with Hyland in the aftermath of his decision to walk off the bench, sources said. 22, it was the most public display of frustration the second-year guard had shown in his quest for a larger role.

Plumlee can play the same role, and his presence means that the Clippers only have to go small when they want to. It is unclear, though, how big of a role Hyland will play when this (extremely deep) team is in the playoffs this season. The Clippers switch a ton, and opponents will target him defensively. He averaged 12.2 points in 19.5 minutes in 42 games for Denver this season, shooting 37.8 percent from 3-point range (and, less impressively, 42.5 percent from 2-point range).
