Schultz: Hawks keep John Collins and now must prove they're more ... (The Athletic)

Will the additions of Saddiq Bey, Bruno Fernando and Garrison Matthews help Atlanta rise? A lot of things are going to have to go right.

[Saddiq Bey](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/saddiq-bey-1li2WZ1BSYZ7fGTT/), who had a strong rookie season but has struggled with consistency since and is one year away from restricted free agency with a likely high price tag. “Not saying I (expected) us to be 82-0,” Collins said. They had to red-line six players (three starters) — three who went to the [Nets](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/nets/) in the Durant trade, three others because of injuries. So they went with [Chris Paul](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/chris-paul-T2sfGOMEeDjjOrJH/), [Deandre Ayton](https://theathletic.com/nba/player/deandre-ayton-PlF5bckQOtrRhpgu/) and a bunch of guys who’ve never been drafted in a fantasy league. Even if they get better, they don’t look like a team that can seriously contend in the East. [Hawks](https://theathletic.com/nba/team/hawks/) were sloppy, committing 19 turnovers. He has at least $50 million and two years left on his contract after this season, and another $26.6 million if he exercises a player option in 2025-26. The only clear thing is the value they put on second-round picks is somewhere between mold and viruses. His role in the Hawks offense also has been dramatically reduced, so it’s not like he has been showcased for other teams. They believe they’re vastly underperforming to the level of their talent. But it’s never at the front of my mind. It was more annoying than anything because I just want to come in here, play basketball, be around my teammates and win basketball games.

Grades: Atlanta Hawks surprise trade addresses major issue (Soaring Down South)

The Atlanta Hawks made a pair of trades for a trio of players that both improved their depth and shaved a little off their bottom line.

He is in the first year of a four-year, $10 million pact that does give the Hawks asset control through the 2026 season or, if they are unsatisfied, in 2025 thanks to a $2.8 million team option in the final year. He is in a down shooting season – just 34.2% of his threes have fallen. Ultimately, that will be the determining factor in whether or not this trade was worth it – despite the seemingly low cost, second-round picks grease a lot of trade wheels. The NBA is a numbers game and three points are worth more than two points. [Clint Capela](https://soaringdownsouth.com/2023/01/11/atlanta-hawks-sign-center-derrick-favors/) and [Onyeka Okongwu](https://soaringdownsouth.com/2023/01/03/atlanta-hawks-loss-reaction-onyeka-okongwu/) on the size chart. [Atlanta Hawks](https://soaringdownsouth.com/atlanta-hawks-news/) have made a (somewhat complicated) trade landing [Saddiq Bey](https://soaringdownsouth.com/2022/08/22/pro-atlanta-hawks-rookie-aj-griffin/) from the Detroit Pistons via the Golden State Warriors in a three-team deal that sees the Hawks send out five second-round picks in return.

Hawks Acquire Guard/Forward Saddiq Bey in Four-Team Trade with ... (Hawks.com)

Third-Year Guard/Forward Acquired for Future Draft Considerations.

He became the youngest player in Pistons history to score 50-or-more points (22 years, 342 days) and the first Piston to record at least 51 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals in a single game. He was selected as the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year in 2019-20, while being a unanimous first team All-BIG EAST selection. Atlanta completed a four-team trade, sending a 2023 second round draft pick (the second-most favorable of Atlanta, Brooklyn, and Charlotte), its own 2024 second round draft pick (provided such pick is among 31-55 in 2024 NBA Draft) and its own 2025 second round draft pick (provided such pick is among 31-40 in 2025 NBA Draft) to Portland. The 6-8 forward has poured in 10-or-more points in 40 of his 52 games this season, including netting a season-high 31 points in a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Jan. Bey has appeared in 52 games (30 starts) for the Pistons this season, averaging 14.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 28.8 minutes (.404 FG%, .345 3FG%, .861 FT%). Drafted by the Brooklyn Nets with the No.

Atlanta Hawks trade deadline deal in 'serious jeopardy': Report (Soaring Down South)

The Atlanta Hawks surprising four-team trade for Saddiq Bey could be in danger of being nixed for a rather unexpected reason.

Instead, Fields retains Collins and adds another former 19th overall pick in Bey. Now the Hawks could end up back at square one. Bey is averaging 14.8 points on 55.2% true shooting with 4.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. “Payton’s core muscle injury could sideline him for up to three months following a Warriors exam.” [says in a piece co-authored](https://theathletic.com/4180625/2023/02/10/gary-payton-physical-trade/) with Anthony Slater (subscription required).
