Metroid Prime Remastered controls offer Wii-style pointer option ... (Polygon)

“Pointer,” based on the Wii release, works similarly to the dual-stick mode but uses gyro controls on the right Joy-con for aiming, with fire on the A button (the right trigger is used for gyro recalibration). The gyro controls are very responsive and accurate, and map perfectly to the movements of Samus’ right arm. What it didn’t mention was that the game also has a “pointer” control scheme enabling motion controls for camera movement and aiming, “similar to Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii.” It’s possible the remaster was done in-house at Retro, although the team there is presumably busy working on It will doubtless be nostalgic fun if you happen to own a GameCube controller and [the adapter](https://www.polygon.com/2017/10/24/16533932/nintendo-switch-gamecube-controllers) that was released alongside Super Smash Bros. “Hybrid” works like the classic controls but enables the pointer-style gyro controls for aiming.

Metroid Dread, a new 2D installment not tied to the Prime series, released in 2021, but that was put together by MercurySteam, the talented developers behind Metroid II remake Samus Returns. Metroid Prime Remastered is certainly good news, and Nintendo fans are rightfully elated. Is Metroid Prime Remastered meant to pave the way for the next proper installment in the series? With safer hands working on the project, it seemed like Metroid Prime 4 was finally on track, but that’s become increasingly harder to tell when we’ve not heard anything new about the project since 2019. Originally, development was delegated to Bandai Namco Studios, who worked on the title until at least 2019, when Nintendo revealed that the project had restarted in-house, with Retro Studios back at the helm of the series it first spearheaded in 2002. [Nintendo Switch](https://www.denofgeek.com/nintendo-switch/), but not with the brand-new installment you were probably hoping for when the publisher announced this month’s Direct presentation.

Metroid Prime Remastered is the best way to experience a classic (The Verge)

Nintendo just released Metroid Prime Remastered on Nintendo Switch, and I was nervous about whether it would hold up. In my first hour with Remastered, ...

The space station is a tightly designed series of rooms and hallways, but the first area you see on Tallon IV is a lush, open biome with waterfalls in the distance. Sure, in a now commonplace trope, you lose much of your gear early on — in this case, while trying to escape the station after beating the parasite queen boss (which has one of the Perhaps the finest moments of the game’s opening take place when you finally escape the space station and land on Tallon IV. Many parts of the station are in ruins, and bodies of alien space pirates lay on the floor, sometimes dead, sometimes hanging on to their final gasps of life to try and kill you. But there’s a reason Metroid games have repeatedly used that trope to pull players in: it’s easy to get attached to Samus’ quest to recover the missing pieces and, eventually, become even more powerful. Metroid Prime isn’t a regular shooter, and this mechanic helps it channel the moody exploration of the 2D games. Back in 2002, this was a critical moment to demonstrate how a 2D series would play in 3D, and while most gamers are probably more familiar with first-person shooters nowadays, Metroid Prime’s lock-on system is still different enough that I appreciated the refresher. The first thing it teaches you is how to use Metroid Prime’s distinct lock-on system, which you’ll rely on throughout the game to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. But I’ll admit that I was a touch nervous to return to the game, which I hadn’t played in years. I scanned one, and the game told me the space pirate had died by “severe lacerations to the abdomen.” Another was killed by “cranial trauma.” [theme song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42u0KB6f5eU) is just as effective at setting the tone of the game as it was when I first played Metroid Prime in 2002 on the GameCube. I tried it briefly, but I vastly prefer the dual-stick controls.)
