Two dominant periods wasted in Avalanche's 2-1 overtime loss to ... (The Denver Post)

Nathan MacKinnon shined, but Kris Letang scored the overtime game-winner when the Colorado Avalanche lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 in overtime.

The 21-year-old was credited with an assist on MacKinnon’s 4-on-4 goal. Makar went to the dressing room for standard concussion protocol in the third period after Carter brushed the defenseman’s head back with a blindside shoulder check. He went to the locker room early but quickly returned to the ice. He circled the net with the puck on his stick before sniping the Avs’ lone goal, and he was pulling the trigger every few seconds during the overtime power play, chances that satisfied coach Jared Bednar. MacKinnon finished with eight shots on goal, two more off the pipe (including one in OT) and two blocked shots in the third period. Compher was in the crease, staring directly at the ill-fated puck.

Rust ultimately drew Pittsburgh even at the end of a sequence in which Francouz's ill-advised poke check led to a scramble that ended with Evgeni Malkin feeding the puck from behind the Colorado net to Rust just outside the crease. The Penguins finally awoke in the third period, peppering Francouz relentlessly. Letang nearly won it earlier in the extra period when he jammed a portion of the puck over the goal line. Francouz couldn't do the same minutes later when Letang wound up and blasted a shot that became his fifth goal of the season. DeSmith, filling in yet again for injured starter Tristan Jarry, held the Avalanche at bay before MacKinnon finally broke through 10:21 into the second period. The Avalanche controlled long stretches of regulation before Bryan Rust tied it with 3:38 remaining in the third period.
