Bob Marley, the last prophet (Pan African Music)

The journalist Francis Dordor, author of the latest biography on the reggae icon, carefully documented and archived his meetings with the "Tuff Gong". Interview ...

If I had to pick just one from the list of my favorites, I’d have to say “Slave Driver” from the Catch A Fire album where I discovered reggae, the Wailers and a whole culture. “In the name of what do we fight for emancipation if not in the name of the universal?” asks the philosopher Francis Wolff. Shortly before the Wailers’ first concert in Paris, in the spring of 1977, I talked to Jacky Jakubowicz (the one from the “Jacky show” who was press agent at Phonogram at the time) about it. One thing leading to another, the thing was set up as a promotional operation. TV crews were invited to cover the event, namely a match on a field near the Eiffel Tower between the Wailers and the “Polymusclés” team, made up of people from the Parisian showbiz. The idea for the soccer game, and I don’t mean that in a boastful way, was mine. Reggae was the music of the moment. Every time he traveled, he would try to find a field just for the pleasure of kicking the ball. The Zimbabwean flag was flying in the window. The fact that he showed up in front of the press in the same outfit – a faded denim outfit – that he had worn the day before on stage. I had the chance to meet Bob Marley several times, in London, Paris, Kingston, and to follow him during the last 5 years of his life, those which correspond to his meteoric rise. But there were members of the London branch of the Black Panthers in the room and that was less cool.

Did you know Bob Marley converted to Christianity before he died? (Aleteia EN)

On November 4, 1980, in a New York City hotel, Bob Marley was baptized as a Christian, but few chronicles of the star's life mention it.

“When he toured Los Angeles and New York and England, he preached the Orthodox faith, and many members in those cities came to the church because of Bob. It is time to share, far and wide, the good news of Bob Marley’s conversion, and to hear his songs as they truly were: seeds of the Word preparing his heart—and our own—for the Gospel. Aside from the occasional nod to Rastafarianism, the event was deeply rooted in Christian song, readings, and prayer—all in a way that was respectful of the great themes of Marley’s life and work. Davis acknowledges that Marley may have been attracted to the ancient authority and mystery of the Ethiopian Church—but also wonders if the Baptism stemmed from Marley’s fear of death or a desire to please his mother, who had “been trying for years to bring him back to Christianity.” But the eyewitness accounts of those closest to Marley and his conversion are telling. Archbishop Abuna Yesehaq—a leader of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church sent to minister to Jamaicans—is the one who baptized Bob. He even said the name of his group derived from the “weeping and wailing” found in the Bible, likely referring to Jeremiah 9:10, a lament over the Babylonian conquest of Judah. We learn a few more details in a 1988 biography by Stephen Davis: the exact location of the baptism was the Wellington Hotel in midtown Manhattan. While his interest in Scripture never faded, by late 1966, Marley slowly but surely began to immerse himself in the Rastafarian view of “Jah,” the Bible, and history. In February of that year, Marley had married Rita Anderson, a Christian who converted to Rastafarianism that April when Selassie visited Jamaica. And at the heart of the Rastafarian faith was the belief that Haile Selassie (or “Ras Tafari”), the Emperor of Ethiopia, was God incarnate and the second coming of Jesus. [reggae](/2018/03/19/matisyahus-jerusalem-is-the-perfect-use-of-the-psalms-in-pop-music/) superstar and face of the Rastafarian movement into the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is a true story—but also, for the most part, an untold one.

There are many tributes to Marley in Jamaica today, including murals and statues. They enjoyed great success in Jamaica and overseas, but life took the trio in different directions eventually. Jamaica has gone on to produce fantastic artists in the Reggae and Dancehall genres. Marley would have continued to create chart-topping music, were it not for his untimely death in 1981.

Bob Marley's Passion for Food (South Florida Caribbean News)

Bob Marley had several documented passions --- music, soccer, women and Rasta. He also loved food.

When he became ill he stayed for an extended time at (manager) Danny Sims’ penthouse in New York and a hospital in Manhattan,” he said. A special food we introduced that he and the band liked was broad bean ital with coconut milk, ‘run down’ with vegetables, especially brussels sprouts.” Whenever he was at home in Jamaica or on tour, he had a cook on call. From Kingston, he has lived in New York City since the late 1960s. Skill was disciplined and maintained a very structured regimen involving exercise and nutritious foods,” Whyte recalled. He liked fish, vegetables, grains, fruit juices, nut shakes, Irish Moss blends and various porridges, the type of food that helped him keep properly conditioned.

The little known story of Bob Marley's conversion to Christianity (Premier Christianity)

The reggae superstar and populariser of Rastafarianism became a Christian shortly before his death in 1981. Tony Cummings reports.

In Jamaica I said it on a popular television programme and a Rasta man met me and asked me why did I have to say that? [Tony Cummings' journalistic career started in 1963 when he started a black music fanzine originally called Soul, then Soul Music Monthly and finally Shout. In 1980 the European tour of Bob Marley And The Wailers played to the largest audiences any music artist had ever experienced there. Six months later on 11 May 1981 the reggae superstar died and received an Ethiopian Orthodox funeral. They became spokespersons not only for black consciousness but for the need for universal love to challenge and overcome the political and social forces of violence and hatred. Then on 21 September 1980 he learned that the cancer had spread to his brain. In late 1979 Marley sought membership within the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the state church of Ethiopia. So when Rita saw him saying ‘Jesus take me’, he had already received the Lord Jesus Christ in his life.” The man Marley referred to was Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia. Rasta beliefs are based on a selective interpretation of the Bible to encompass a single God, referred to as Jah, who is deemed to reside within each individual. With Bunny Livingstone and Peter Tosh, Bob formed a ragamuffin trio the Wailers. Rastafari originated among the poor and oppressed Afro-Jamaican communities in 1930s Jamaica.
