Michigan State basketball can't find late shots in 61-55 loss to ... (Detroit Free Press)

Michigan State Spartans guard Tyson Walker (2) shoots the ball as Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Hauser struggled early from deep, missing his first five shot ...

"I thought the second half, they got downhill and got to the free throw line," Izzo said. Akins drained a 3-pointer — just the second of the game for MSU — and Hoggard’s two free throws pushed the cushion back to five. But much of it came due to the Spartans and Scarlet Knights suffering bouts of poor shooting, puzzling decision-making and imprecise attempts at execution. "We gotta have those wins if we want to get to where we want to go. "They got downhill and got to the hole," Izzo said. MSU center Mady Sissoko went to the bench with two fouls and sat the final 12:54 of the period. The Spartans then scored the final three buckets in the last 1:49, starting with a Jaxon Kohler up-and-under layup and Hauser’s second layup. But MSU’s defense bothered the Scarlet Knights, holding them to 1-for-10 from 3-point range and just 24.1% overall in the half. He appeared to suffer a right hand injury after making the deep shot but played through it. And then we didn't do what we were supposed to down the stretch. The Spartans did manage a 44-34 rebounding advantage, with Malik Hall grabbing 13, but the senior also made just one of nine shots to finish with four points. Mulcahy scored five straight points after the Spartans pulled within 46-44, including back-to-back layups in the final three minutes that proved to be a knockout punch in a game in which neither team sustained any rhythm or found any success shooting from long range.

Rutgers grinds out win over Michigan State at Madison Square ... (Asbury Park Press)

It was far from pretty, it wasn't the cleanest game. But in the end Rutgers escaped MSG with a 61-55 victory over Michigan State.

He eventually returned to the bench in street clothes with a wrap on his leg. The lower bowl – and most of the upper level – was almost entirely filled with red with some patches of green and white mixed in. He was on the floor for a couple minutes while trainer Richard Campbell tended to him. Mawot Mag, who’s really stepped up for Rutgers this season on both ends of the floor, suffered a knee injury with just more than six minutes to go in the first half. "I talked to our guys a lot about just, ‘Stay the course.’ I thought in the second half we really started getting downhill. Neither team shot well in the first half – Michigan State went 37.9 percent from the field and Rutgers shot just 7-of-29 (24.1 percent). It came during a dreadful offensive stretch for Michigan State, the Spartans unable to make shots from outside or around the rim. "All year, if we’re connected on the defensive end we cause havoc, we cause problems," McConnell said. I feel like if we’re all connected on the defensive end, we’re hard to beat." But in the end Rutgers escaped the World’s Most Famous Arena with a 61-55 victory over Tom Izzo’s Spartans. We figured out a way to win." "But it was beautiful to me.

Late miscues doom Michigan State in loss to Rutgers at MSG (mlive.com)

The Spartans lost an eight-point second half as they fell to Rutgers.

Starting with 16 minutes left, Rutgers (16-7, 8-4) got into the paint and to the free throw line for a seven-point run as Michigan State missed seven straight shots. That gave them a six-point lead after a low-scoring first half. Malik Hall went 1-for-9 and Hoggard went 3-for-10. Tyson Walker finished with 12 points and Hauser recorded 10. The Spartans have now gone 2-5 in their last seven games after a 12-4 start to the season. The Spartans finished the first half on a six-point run as Jaxon Kohler made a reverse layup, Hauser nailed a jumper and Walker recorded a steal and passed ahead to Jaden Akins for a layup as the first half expired. After a rough shooting start for both teams -- Rutgers started 2-for-16 from the floor, Michigan State started 3-for-14 – Michigan State found its offense and took the momentum into halftime. Down by six with four minutes left, Michigan State recorded a pair of Malik Hall free throws and a Mady Sissoko dunk on a feed from Hall to get back within two. Michigan State didn’t have a double-digit scorer until the final minute of play and recorded its second-lowest point total of the season. With six minutes left, Joey Hauser and Mady Sissoko both missed two front-end free throws within a minute of one another and Rutgers hit a 3-pointer in between to take its first lead of the second half. The two teams stayed within one possession of each other for most of the next five minutes until Michigan State started to pile on the mistakes and handed the lead over. After surging to take an eight-point lead early in the second half, Michigan State saw that lead evaporate amid a flurry of missed shots and mistakes.

Rutgers Men's Basketball Turns the Garden Red for One Day (The New York Times)

Rutgers beat Michigan State at Madison Square Garden, which had the feel of a home game for the improving Scarlet Knights.

After the game, Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo pulled aside McConnell and Mulcahy, a senior who grew up in nearby Bayonne. Among the few holdovers from that team is Caleb McConnell, a sinewy 6-foot-7 guard from Jacksonville, Fla., who wasn’t anybody’s idea of a blue chipper when he arrived. Caleb McConnell was a 5-star defender, but he wasn’t a 5-star player. The crowd — announced at 14,844 — was nothing like the one the last time Rutgers played here, a 2020 loss to Michigan shortly before the coronavirus pandemic ended the season. Rutgers is also hopeful of landing another elite recruit from that class, Dylan Harper, the younger brother of Ron Harper Jr., who finished at Rutgers last season. McConnell had four steals on Saturday, turning the game in the second half with his defense, while adding 9 points, drawing 6 fouls and adding 3 assists. tournament for the first time in 30 years. That was, after all, the premise for That game felt like one at a neutral site, with a large contingent of Michigan fans. They filed into Madison Square Garden on Saturday morning, filling the arena nearly up to the Harry Styles banner in the rafters. They trailed by 8 points early in the second half, made 3 of 16 3-pointers, surrendered 13 offensive rebounds and missed 12 free throws. The Knights are rarely the biggest or the quickest team, nor are they often the most skilled.

Michigan State basketball desperately needs A.J. Hoggard to shake ... (Detroit Free Press)

How A.J. Hoggard goes usually is how Michigan State basketball goes. Saturday proved to be a struggle for the junior point guard and his Spartans.

He immediately called for Mady Sissoko to set a screen in a two-man game, then drove into the paint. The Scarlet Knights went on a 10-2 run to retake the lead and never trailed again. Izzo pulled his point guard away from the huddle to try and get him to calm down. He wants Hoggard to “be dynamic then,” whether it’s scoring or passing or defending. Mulcahy had all 17 of his points in the second half, including 12 in the final 10 minutes, earning eight free throws on 12 tries by attacking the Spartans off the dribble. That proved to be a turning point in momentum. Hoggard jogged slowly and far behind the play after his turnover. “We were hoping to play him 29 minutes, we play him 32½. After a stretch in December and early January in which he committed two or fewer turnovers in eight straight games, Hoggard now has 19 in MSU’s past seven games. Hoggard’s 12.5 points a game are third on the team, while his 5.7 assists rank among the best in the Big Ten. Sometimes, it’s a bad decision in the flow of the game or a flashy pass gone awry. Sometimes, it’s a 3-pointer early in the shot clock, despite being just a 28.1% shooter on 3s.
