Duke vs. North Carolina: Live stream, watch online, TV channel ... (CBSSports.com)

The Blue Devils and Tar Heels are set for their first matchup of the season on Saturday.

This will be the first taste of college basketball's best rivalry for many of the Duke players, and it could be too big of a moment for a squad that has operated outside the national spotlight since a couple of big November games. Because of their youth and Scheyer's inexperience, the have navigated ups and downs, but this game marks a chance for Duke to win three consecutive games for the first time since early December. North Carolina famously went on to beat Duke again nearly a month later in one of the most memorable Final Four games of NCAA Tournament history to end Coach K's career. But history is history and the reality is that both teams are still finding their way in the 2022-23 season even after Final Four runs a season ago. Instead, its first-year coach Jon Scheyer who is leading Duke in what amounts to a pivotal ACC battle as the squads play for the 259th time in series history. But the Tar Heels shouldn't be the least bit flustered by what figures to be a rowdy road environment.

Through one half of the first Duke-North Carolina matchup of the season, matters are as competitive and close as one would expect, but the Blue Devils have ...

1 recruit scored zero points in the first half. While aggressive defense was certainly a factor, it seemed that often, players thought too far ahead, perhaps falling prey to the pressure of the brightest lights. In case the Cameron Crazies needed a reminder of that, Love opened the game’s scoring with a three from the parking lot. Filipowski alone turned the ball over three times, Nance twice, as the Blue Devils and Tar Heels tallied seven and five turnovers, respectively. Though the night’s magnitude manifested itself in some ways, that was the attitude the Blue Devils brought, playing the brand of defense-first basketball they have all season. Heading into the break, the Blue Devils have a slim advantage at 33-32.

Duke Gets Lively With The Heels, 63-47 (Duke Basketball Report)

Saturday's Duke-UNC game wasn't quite a classic, but it was intense, hard-fought, and Duke came out on top 63-57. So maybe not a classic, but a good game?

UNC did a great job of shutting down the lane and forcing Duke to shoot away from the basket. And it was well-deserved. When the game was over, well, it’s been a while since we’ve seen such an excited bunch of Blue Devils. And Duke did a tremendous job on UNC, starting with Lively’s superb defense on Bacot. After that, Duke had fouls to give and burned to to burn clock. Lively was great Saturday evening, He also matched Bacot on the boards with 14 total and almost matched on the offensive end with three. Saturday’s Duke-UNC game wasn’t quite a classic, but it was intense, hard-fought, and Duke came out on top 63-57. Kyle Filipowski mostly defended Pete Nance and Nance was just 1-10 from the floor. The first half was kind of hit-and-miss on both sides, and by hit-and-miss we mean baskets. That’s a good night for a lot of guys, but Bacot is capable of 18-20 boards a night.

How Duke basketball turned weakness into strength to beat UNC in ... (Raleigh News & Observer)

The Duke Blue Devils are on a three-game winning streak after making crucial plays in the final minute to beat ACC rival UNC Tar Heels.

But that allowed the Tar Heels to take the ball out under their own basket, a weakness on Duke’s defense. It’s a stark example of the growth this freshman-laden Duke team is experiencing. Synergy shows Duke in the 78th percentile nationally, allowing only 0.781 points per possession after timeouts. Last season, while going to the Final Four, the Blue Devils produced 1.014 points per possession after timeouts, ranking in the 96th percentile nationally to get an “excellent” grade. It was a beautifully executed play that played a major role in Duke winning its third consecutive game. The idea was to spread out UNC’s defense to expose driving lanes, attacking guard RJ Davis (who had four fouls) and center Armando Bacot. “Two guys went to Flip and I got an easy lane. He grabbed his own rebound and Scheyer signaled the timeout. That’s important because Synergy shows Duke has turned it over on 15.7% of its after-timeout possessions. That team hit 48.6% of its shots after a timeout. Over the past 10 seasons, Duke’s has regularly earned an “excellent” rating by Synergy in such situations. “I think that’s a big growth for our team.

Because of this, the Blue Devils were able to hold their opponent to just two points in the last five minutes of the game. With the Tar Heels returning largely the same group from those games, it was important for the Blue Devils to be able to play a clean game in order to keep their most dominant players in for long as possible. His five offensive boards, including two in the last two minutes of the game, gave Duke the ability to control play down the stretch and close out a massive win. In just his fifth game back from injury, Duke’s veteran point guard played all 40 minutes, scoring 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds, all while playing incredible defense against the Tar Heels’ backcourt. Lively finished the game with eight blocks, the most memorable of which came late in the match against junior guard Caleb Love, where he swatted the shot attempt into the stands.
