It has been a year since a blockbuster trade between the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers. Looking back now, who won the trade?
I have always subscribed to the notion that in the NBA, the team that wins a trade is the team that receives the best player in the deal. He is a knockdown bucket and is top fifteen in the league in 3-point shooting percentage with 41.8%. Simmons, the main asset the Nets expected to be receiving in the trade, is averaging a measly 7.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game in just over 27 minutes of playing. Even though that has not happened, there has been a significant improvement in Harden’s game and chemistry with this roster when compared to last season. For Brooklyn, O’Neal is playing his role next to superstars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. One year later, let’s take a look at how this trade is looking for both sides and who seems to have won.

He scored 21 points when the teams met earlier this season and will likely be the focal point of San Antonio’s offense yet again. The 76ers average the ninth-most threes per game (12.9) and the fourth-most free throws per game (20). San Antonio excels at making the extra pass, averaging the third-most assists per game (27.2 APG). A talented scorer himself, a date with the Spurs seems like a perfect opportunity for Maxey to drop a big point total. Formerly a scoring leader, Harden now serves as one of the best passers in the league. Offensively, the 76ers feature one of the most potent one-two punches in the league thanks to Joel Embiid and James Harden. Additionally, Embiid has vastly improved on the defensive end with an average of 1.1 steals per game and 1.7 blocks per game. The combo guard has been red-hot over their last five games, averaging 18 PPG while shooting 36% from the three-point line. The Spurs covered 44% of their games while 60% went over the projected point total. The 76ers covered 57% of their games while 60% went over the projected point total.

James Harden went to the locker room during Friday's game.
Tyrese Maxey had 25 points and James Harden added 16 for Philadelphia, which has the third-best record in the Eastern Conference.
76ers: Harden said he was fine after exiting for the locker room with a second remaining in the first half after falling on his elbow late in the first half. That was the bad part of the game." ... Popovich received a technical foul with 5 minutes remaining in the first quarter after stomping down the sideline and screaming at official Mousa Dagher. The shorthanded Spurs were simply outclassed by a superior opponent and are now on an eight-game losing streak heading into the Rodeo Road Trip.
- The Spurs bringing former players to home games and having them be a part of the broadcast for a segment has been great, but sometimes the guys who join understandably struggle a little with finding a rhythm on air. It’s a good thing that he has become more than just a defender and tries to counter star big men on the other end or take advantage of matchups against reserves. They did too good of a job of it, cutting the lead to 10 and forcing Doc Rivers to send his starters back in, but Pop stuck with the deep bench group that simply had no answers against better-quality opposition but got some valuable experience out of the matchup. As the second half started, it was clear that the 76ers were locked in and hoping to put the pesky Spurs away for good, but as hard as they tried, San Antonio’s starters kept at it and the lead stay within the 15-point range. Missing three starters means having to rely on guys that rarely get minutes for a reason, but at least we got to see Blake Wesley get some shots up and Dominick Barlow get some playing time. With Tyrese Maxey and Embiid spearheading the effort, they slowly started to create a small lead that eventually ballooned to double digits and got dangerously close to 20 points after consecutive San Antonio turnovers that resulted in dunks.
The Ringer on Maxey's ranking: Maxey is emerging into the third star the Sixers needed next to Joel Embiid and James Harden, providing additional shot creation ...
And though he isn’t a lockdown defender on the perimeter, he’s capable of switching if needed. Even an aging Harden is tremendous in the pick-and-roll, if not to the same ridiculous extremes he once was. It’s clear that the version of Harden suiting up for the Sixers isn’t the same, dominant player who drove elite offenses (and led the league in scoring) year in and year out in Houston. He’s a three-level scorer who can get to the basket for slippery finishes off the glass, pull up to hit contested midrange jumpers, or jack a shot from way behind the arc. The number next to each player denotes their place on the list: When the Sixers are fully operational, Harris works primarily as a spot shooter to help keep the floor spaced for Joel Embiid and James Harden.
After a bit of a moribund start to their 2022-23 campaign, the Philadelphia 76ers are on the upswing.
