Bruins-Maple Leafs: What we learned as Boston snaps 3-game ... (Boston.com)

The Bruins snapped their only losing streak of the season and head into the All-Star break with a 5-2 win over Toronto.

Unlike their two losses in the Sunshine State, the Bruins provided a resounding response to Toronto’s late push. This time, the Bruins had an answer to any Toronto pushback in the third period. “I think we played really good in the third. Forbort jumped in as the second man in the offensive zone and buried Frederic’s feed. With two days ahead of their final test before a 10-day layoff, Carlo and the Bruins can now hit the reset button. The forwards obviously got to the net front quite a bit and opened up some opportunities to screen the goalie and get pucks behind him. Carlo found himself down in the right circle and deposited the puck past Samsonov. Once again, the Bruins used their weak side defenseman to quickly transition up ice at any given opportunity. It was good to get that result and get back on track.” Zacha capped off a tremendous shift by cutting back in the high slot and firing a dart past Ilya Samsonov to extend Boston’s lead to 4-2. After a weeklong skid, a reactivated Boston back-end led the charge. With a 10-day layoff in sight, a loss against the rival Toronto Maple Leafs would’ve left a sour taste, but hardly affected the Black and Gold’s comfortable position atop the league standings.

Pavel Zacha scores twice as Bruins beat Maple Leafs 5-2 (Raleigh News & Observer)

Pavel Zacha scored twice in the third period as the Boston Bruins held off the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 on Wednesday night.

“We all want to contribute in that aspect when we can,” said Carlo, who has two goals on the season. Zacha's second goal of the night came at 12:19 of the third. Of the four Bruins scorers, only Zacha has double digits in goals this season, with his two on Wednesday lifting him to 11. “I thought we were with them nearly the whole way,” said Leafs forward Mitchell Marner, who had a power-play goal in the second. Derek Forbort and Brandon Carlo both had goals in the second period as Boston snapped a three-game winless skid. Pavel Zacha scored twice in the third as Boston surged past the Maple Leafs 5-2 on Wednesday.

Four Takeaways From Bruins' Win Vs. Maple Leafs To Snap Skid (NESN.com)

The Bruins go into the All-Star break with the NHL's best record and snapped their three-game losing streak with a win over the Maple Leafs.

I hadn’t seen us practice with that kind of pace and purpose in a while, and especially the competitive fire that was there. 11, so they’ll have time to reset and build off a strong first half of the season. Over the last three games the Bruins at times looked lost and couldn’t keep up with other teams, but head coach Jim Montgomery knew that was about to change. “When I tried to hit him at first, I didn’t get a grip on him so it was hard for me to come back cause he has a long reach. Greer admitted after the game that the adrenaline from scoring his fifth goal of the season made it easy for him to fight, even if it wasn’t “the best decision.” “It wasn’t the best decision because we were up 3-1 but it’s hard for me to say no.

“We weren’t able to get off the mat like we needed to and respond like we have in the past. And we just can’t be one of those teams in the way. But it’s just the latest evidence that both Boston winter clubs have something special brewing, and the Garden might want to keep dates open through June. It has been a while since the Nets have been able to do that. I just felt like we were one of those teams in the way. He added: “It’s a physicality piece that we didn’t bring to the table. So, it’s a significant gap between them and the rest of the league when you look at the season in its entirety. The Celtics not only delivered the first blow but the second, third and fourth. That such conversations are rarely had in the Bruins room following games this season is just another intangible way to try and encapsulate what’s been an utterly dominant season thus far. “But over the course of the season, it’s significant. The NHL’s best third-period team outscored Toronto 3-1 in the final 20, including two goals in a span of just over three minutes to cruise to a 5-2 win. Yet, as close as Toronto might feel it is to the Bruins, there’s still a significant enough gap — and the Maple Leafs know it.

NHL Source: 'If Bruins Want Chychrun, They're Moving A Roster D' (Boston Hockey Now)

If the Bruins are to truly pursue Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun on the NHL trade market, they likely need to move a roster defenseman.

They would need to move a current guy on their defense to make it happen, whether it’s to the Coyotes or another team. However, it wouldn’t likely be to the Coyotes, but rather to another team to accomodate Chychrun roster-wise and cap-wise. His team leads the league at the All-Star break and general manager Don Sweeney could make it an even better one with the right moves.

He didn’t have that concern a year ago, ahead of the Lindholm acquisition. “We have to get better,” Montgomery said as the club packed up in Toronto. Derek Forbort and Brandon Carlo added to the blue liners’ success Wednesday night, each contributing a goal in the 5-2 win over the Maple Leafs. The bugaboo then, as in years past, was the Black and Gold’s inability to establish inside ice in the offensive zone, to wring out that tough goal. Had Miller’s equal been in the lineup last May, the Hurricanes might have expected a rough ride around the rink after Andrei Svechnikov delivered the hit that sent Lindholm to Palookaville in Game 2. 1 target could be adding some toughness to the backline.

Pastrnak arrived with a smile after the Bruins drafted him in the first round (25th overall) in 2014. “He’s got a really good hockey IQ, and he’s a big boy. “You come here by yourself,” Tarasenko said. Whether he re-signs in Boston or tests free agency, Pastrnak — scheduled to splash down in South Florida on Friday with Bruins netminder Linus Ullmark and coach Jim Montgomery — could become one of the highest-paid players in the game. [According to David Pagnotta](https://www.thefourthperiod.com/pagnotta/kane-toews-to-discuss-futures-in-new-year) of The Fourth Period, the Bruins are also one of the teams currently linked to Chicago Blackhawks captain [Jonathan Toews](https://thehockeywriters.com/docs/jonathan-toews/). Nevertheless, it is clear that general manager (GM) Don Sweeney is considering all of his options as we gear up to the deadline. As a result, the Bruins would likely need to give up their 2023 first-round pick, 2025 second-round pick, Grzelcyk, and one of Fabian Lysell or Mason Lohrei to make this deal go through. Now, more fuel is being added to the fire, as [The Fourth Period reported](https://www.thefourthperiod.com/trade-watch-list-2023) that the Bruins are one of the teams currently being linked to Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman [Vladislav Gavrikov](https://thehockeywriters.com/docs/vladislav-gavrikov/). As a result, the Bruins could very well be forced to part ways with their 2023 third-round pick and a prospect to bring the veteran to Boston. As a result, they could throw in Smith or Reilly with their 2023 third-round pick to finalize the trade. It certainly would make sense for them to bring in the star, as he would provide a major upgrade to the Bruins’ top pairing. The Blackhawks’ reported asking price for Toews is a second-round pick and a third-round pick. As a result, the Blue Jackets are likely to expect nothing less than that for Gavrikov. NHL insider [Pierre LeBrun recently reported](https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/bruins/nhl-rumors-bruins-lightning-have-reached-out-canucks-about-luke-schenn) that the Bruins have reached out to the Canucks about Schenn, and it ultimately makes sense. [I have been arguing](https://thehockeywriters.com/bruins-bottom-pair-defensemen-trade-targets-2021-22/) that the Bruins should be making a big push to bring in Vancouver Canucks defenseman Luke Schenn. The Boston Bruins are currently at the top of the NHL standings, as they sport a truly spectacular 39-7-5 record.
