The New York Islanders have pulled off one of its largest trades in years, acquiring Vancouver Canucks star Bo Horvat for Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Raty, ...
He scored just 12 goals in 75 games last season and has nine with 11 assists so far in 2022-23. It’s a considerable price to pay for Horvat, who is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2022-23 season. As a team, they have scored two or fewer goals 12 times in their last 13 games before the All-Star break with their leading goal scorers in Brock Nelson and Anders Lee tied with 19 goals apiece.
NHL prospect analyst Chris Peters examines what the Vancouver Canucks got for trading captain Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders.
This is Patrik Allvin's first massive trade as a NHL general manager and he got a prospect that should help their team down the road and a first-round pick that carries a bit more value this season. Räty is a 20-year-old player with upside who still has a little ways to go before we figure out exactly what he'll be at the NHL level. Regardless, that pick still has a chance to be an especially valuable asset. The most optimistic projection is that he's a top-six center who can drive play. The more likely scenario is that he's a middle-six center who can provide good secondary scoring and adequate defensive play. He's had an effective Liiga season and now has made a solid transition to North America. The club traded Horvat to the New York Islanders for a package that included winger Anthony Beauvillier, center prospect Aatu Räty and a first-round draft pick in 2023. He had 15 points in 27 games with the Bridgeport Islanders before his most recent NHL recall. As a result, he became a top-quality trade candidate and offered the Canucks an opportunity to land some quality future assets. It was also the 10th-most productive season by a U20 player in Liiga in the previous 20 years. The 20-year-old scored two goals, including one against the Canucks, and averaged 8:46 of ice time with the Isles with his last game coming Saturday night. New York did not have very many future assets at their disposal to make a deal work, but likely parted with two of their most valuable futures in this particular trade.

He has seven goals and 15 points in 27 games in the AHL and also has two points in 12 games with the Islanders this season. In total, the Canucks have four picks in the first three rounds and seven selections overall. Getting Raty and a first-round pick also could prove beneficial in the coming years. He is currently on pace to finish the season with 34 points, which would tie what he scored last season in 75 games. The Blue Jackets had 33 points to start the week, while the Blackhawks had 34. The 27-year-old is in the final season of a six-year contract extension that carried a $5.5 million annual average value. Adding Horvat gives the Islanders a top-six center whose 31 goals are tied for eighth in the league, while his 54 points are tied for 21st. From there, the Canucks found cohesion under Boudreau and went 32-15-10 for the remainder of 2021-22. "He brings a two-way game, used in all situations, and without question is on the verge of having a career year but has over the past several years been a 30- to 35-goal scorer," Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello said. He’s still a center, and he’s certainly worth a flier, given Vancouver’s near-total lack of viable bodies down the middle. Beauvillier’s profile — a young-ish, good skater with a 21-goal season on his resume — is the exact sort of thing Rutherford prioritizes. The Islanders’ window is now with this core, and this move put even more emphasis on that — especially with what went back Vancouver’s way. If this is the first phase of a “retool,” it’s not a very promising one. In a deep draft for an ageing team outside its window, it’s a move that likely just prolongs the inevitable. [Sabres](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/sabres/). The Islanders' Horvat trade will have a different narrative depending on whether he is around for a few months or a number of years.
So, yes, they had interest in Horvat, but they would have wanted to talk extension with Horvat’s camp first, and as discussed above, that permission was never granted to the agent. He often doesn’t believe in moving them no matter where his team is in the standings. 1 player on The Athletic’s trade board was moved. There is so much riding on getting that extension done, in my mind, when judging this trade, especially when you consider that the first-round pick traded to Vancouver is top-12 protected for this season and unprotected if it slides to 2024. The real need there is a winger before the deadline. People were quick to point out on social media after the trade was made that if the Isles fall out of the playoff race, the team could always flip Horvat before the March 3 trade deadline. Or, more to the point, severely limit trade options. No talks on that yet,” Horvat said. “We’ll work at it and do the best we can. I later asked him how much urgency there was, given the gamble that he’s an unrestricted free agent on July 1. That seemed surprising because you would think it would augment the return on a trade. We’ll do everything we can to get it done.”
The 27-year-old center is having a career season with 31 goals and 23 assists.

"I'm not going to lie, in the summer time, and even at the beginning of the year, honestly, I thought I was going to be a Canuck. He will be a much-needed addition to the Islanders' offense, so it makes sense why they made the move now even though the 2023 NHL trade deadline is not until March 3. Bo Horvat understands why the New York Islanders made waves around the hockey world on Monday night to acquire him from the Vancouver Canucks for Anthony.
I really like the build of this team and the leadership group and how everything is built here. The Islanders will be hoping that Horvat’s career year will translate to New York to get them back into the thick of the playoff picture. I think I can add that to this group.

If the Islanders end up with a top-12 selection this summer, Vancouver will receive their 2024 first-rounder instead. He scored a goal in his NHL debut on Dec. The NHL trade deadline is March 3. Here are biggest moves that occurred leading up to deadline, including Canucks sending Bo Horvat to the Islanders.
The Rangers made this move early in the season to give them more cap space to make a bigger move at the deadline. 23: The Toronto Maple Leafs acquire defenseman Conor Timmins from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for forward Curtis Douglas. The Maple Leafs were missing three defensemen at the time, and Timmins adds to their defensive depth. 23: The Minnesota Wild acquire forward Ryan Reaves from the New York Rangers for a fifth-round 2025 pick. 25: The Colorado Avalanche acquire forward Matt Nieto and defenseman Ryan Merkley from the San Jose Sharks for defenseman Jacob MacDonald and forward Martin Kaut. 30: The New York Islanders acquire forward Bo Horvat from the Vancouver Canucks for forwards Anthony Beauvillier and Aatu Raty and a protected 2023 first-round draft pick. 19: The Florida Panthers acquire forward Givani Smith from the Detroit Red Wings for defenseman Michael Del Zotto. That could make the difference on a team that has had to rely too much on its stellar goaltending. He had four assists in his final game with the Canucks, and is the Islanders' new leader in goals, points and power play goals and points. The Canucks couldn't offer Horvat enough to account for his All-Star season, and the Islanders are having trouble scoring. He is on an expiring contract and the Blue Jackets could have received something in return for him had he been healthy. 1: The Columbus Blue Jackets announce forward Gustav Nyquist (shoulder) is likely out for the season.

Especially if Horvat is who they choose to build around in the post-Bergeron era. But the corresponding financial commitment to a player on an unsustainable scoring heater like Horvat would spell trouble. [said in his latest 32 Thoughts Podcast.](https://www.audacy.com/podcasts/31-thoughts-the-podcast-52409) “I don’t have any evidence to believe at this time that the Bruins are interested in doing that. Even a player like Trent Frederic has raised his value this season with Boston, with the forward’s blend of size and snarl making him a useful cog in the B’s bottom-six grouping. He had just five goals off of tips/deflections over the previous two seasons. This offseason, Boston is expected to hold around $22 million in available cap space. As much as trades involving the likes of Mike Reilly or Craig Smith would alleviate those woes, Boston has had no such luck thus far. Don Sweeney and the Bruins might be hesitant to relinquish further draft capital or young talent after years of draining the farm system. Horvat is a better player than Zacha, Frederic, or Carlo. It’s a risk that becomes very real if the Islanders remain rudderless over the next month. A player like Horvat might project as a perfect deadline pickup for Boston. Raty was considered New York’s top prospect, with the 20-year-old center once tabbed as a potential No.

The Islanders surely lack goals and Horvat certainly provides them. Friedman mentions the Islanders would only want to make this move if it comes with a long-term attachment to Horvat and that should come to the surprise of no one. However, head coach Lane Lambert hasn't been afraid to try Mathew Barzal on Brock Nelson's wing with Anders Lee, and although the sample with that trio has been small, it's definitely piqued the interest of many with how dominant they've been as a line. If something were to come to fruition, it should come as no surprise if Horvat was extended. "I've wondered if the Islanders are around this but I don't think they want (Horvat) as a rental," Friedman speculated to Jeff Marek. The Islanders have the defense to keep pucks out of their net and the goaltending that's considered among the best in the NHL.

Where will former Canuck captain Bo Horvat slot into the New York Islanders lineup, and how will he help? Adam Vingan breaks it all down.
He leads all forwards with 354 defensive-zone carry-outs and is sixth at the position with 309 offensive-zone carry-ins. Horvat has taken (197) and won (127) more offensive-zone faceoffs on the power play than any other player — a rate of 64.5 per cent. Horvat has 11 power-play goals on his own. “There’s no question in my mind that he should help our power play,” Lamoriello told reporters. The Islanders have won 54.8 per cent of their offensive-zone faceoffs on the power play, 19th in the league. Overall, they rank 25th in actual (2.85) and expected (2.72) goals per game.
The New York Islanders make a blockbuster trade with the Vancouver Canucks for Bo Horvat. Here's the details and analysis.
[New York Islanders17 hours ago ](https://nyihockeynow.com/new-york-islanders-bo-horvat-lamoriello-tarasenko-meier-defenseman-playoffs-sell/) He had two goals to his name but was averaging under nine minutes per game despite playing sound positionally and showcasing a dominant hockey IQ. This last week, Beauvillier had a chance to play with Mathew Barzal, but could not get much done at five-on-five. [Anthony Beauvillier](https://nyihockeynow.com/new-york-islanders-in-review-anthony-beauvillier-2021-22-lou-lamoriello/) had run his course with the Islanders. Clearly, those talks had escalated as the Canucks likely could have been given a much stronger return near the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline on March 3. No contract extension information has been shared at this time.
49ers showed everyone why QBs are more protected than wild animals, refs showed why they can't be trusted with anything else.
And where is this team going even if it scraps a wildcard spot? There was a pretty big trade in the NHL last night, as the Vancouver Canucks finally freed Bo Horvat from his toil in B.C. And given that more and more NFL teams are easing off practice as the season goes on, there’s less time than ever. We rant and yell when we watch our team on the ass end of a game-changing roughing the passer call — or in my case or any other Chicago Bears fan’s case when we can’t get any call on But if you go over the rules for practice in training camp and during the season, there really isn’t all that much time. [Trey Lance](https://deadspin.com/projections-on-trey-lance-flipped-after-only-five-passe-1849418797)’s injury to any other team — and in fairness that was on a scramble — probably kneecaps their whole season.

[Josh Bailey](https://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/5056/josh-bailey), [Kyle Palmieri](https://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/5517/kyle-palmieri) and [Oliver Wahlstrom](https://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/4352727/oliver-wahlstrom) are the top candidates. [Montreal Canadiens](/nhl/team/_/name/mtl/montreal-canadiens) and more power-play goals than the [Columbus Blue Jackets](/nhl/team/_/name/cbj/columbus-blue-jackets), I would venture to say the Isles have had the worst power play in the NHL this season. He's probably destined to run out most of the season at the AHL level with the occasional cup of coffee with the Canucks. That said, if Barzal and Horvat play at even strength together and find a groove, the third member of their line, whomever it is, might join them on the advantage, which would bump Lee, Nelson or both of them. The [Edmonton Oilers](/nhl/team/_/name/edm/edmonton-oilers) have scored 33 since then! Jump on Wahlstrom if there is official word he will play on a line with Horvat and Barzal. Bailey hasn't been able to repeat his fantasy success since [John Tavares](https://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/5160/john-tavares) left town, so maybe this is a chance for him to play the assist-heavy role that drove him to 71 points in 2017-18 with Tavares and [Anders Lee](https://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/5793/anders-lee). But with two natural centers on a line, the Islanders can probably afford a little defensive liability when it comes to the third member. The 22-year-old has put up dazzling fantasy numbers, but only on a per-minute basis as his ice time has not kept pace with the potential he's shown. But that 30-goal potential has yet to be unlocked since Palmieri arrived in Long Island after his best years with the Which leaves the team with working in Horvat, Nelson and Barzal on the scoring lines.
Did the Canucks garner enough value for Horvat? Let's dive in and analyze the package they acquired from the Islanders.

The question for that surrounds his skating — he can charge down the ice once he’s picked up steam but lacks explosive acceleration — and a lack of high-end hockey sense which could impede his ability to drive a line from the middle. When you sell a rental at the deadline and acquire a first-round pick, you suspect that it’s going to land in the mid-20s or later. Of course, adding a piece like Horvat changes the complexion of the Islanders’ roster and makes them more formidable in the playoff race. When a blockbuster trade is made, there’s a rush for fans to figure out whether they fleeced the other team or whether they were the ones that got robbed.

Three games into Bo Horvat's NHL career, his coach threw him right into the fire.
He’s dealt with subpar results with the Canucks, but according to those who know him, has the sort of habits that can propel a team forward. “I think the Islanders team, the best word to describe them is team. “Because for example, in transition, the game’s fast. “I think the biggest thing I can say about Bo is that he wouldn’t accept being average. NHL.com has the fantasy hockey impact of the trade that sent valuable center Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders from the Vancouver Canucks.
A change of scenery could help Beauvillier, who ranks fifth on the Islanders in points (209 in 457 games) and fourth in goals (102) and shots on goal (897) since entering the NHL in 2016-17. Raty, who has scored two goals in 12 NHL games this season, could play for the Canucks down the stretch and is worth considering in fantasy keeper and dynasty leagues. That said, it's worth noting Horvat's shooting percentage (21.7), which is the second highest in the NHL behind Mark Scheifele (21.8) of the Winnipeg Jets among players with at least 100 shots on goal this season, could regress going to the Islanders (2.85 goals per game; 25th in NHL) from the deeper Canucks offense (3.31; 10th). Other potential beneficiaries of the Horvat trade on the Islanders include wings Anders Lee, Kyle Palmieri, Zach Parise and also defenseman Noah Dobson (lower body) whenever he returns from injury. The New York Islanders acquired center Bo Horvat from the Vancouver Canucks on Monday, instantly making him New York's highest-ranked fantasy skater for the rest of the season. The Horvat trade could also help elite goalie Ilya Sorokin, who's ranked fourth at his position and among the top 25 overall players in standard Yahoo Fantasy leagues this season, reach his full fantasy ceiling.
