The 7 Deadly Sins Of Corporate Black History Month Programming (Forbes)

While most organizations will set aside time in February to commemorate Black History month, many will make tragic mistakes along the way.

Those organizations with dismal Black representation should be making an even more concerted effort to not just celebrate BHM but more importantly to question the lack of representation. The Bottom Line: Take the time to not just present historical facts but also provide more sophisticated analysis that directly connects them to the present. Not doing so runs the risk of simply feeding the dangerous, misguided narrative that learning about African-American history is really about making white people feel guilty or feel bad about themselves—wrong. Glaringly, too many organizations treat BHM as a bit of a party while continuing to neglect the necessary ongoing work focused around minimizing disparities, creating equity and improving the current day experience for Black professionals. “The company should support BHM regardless of the opinions of people who don't ‘get it’ or who disagree with the celebration of BHM.” Indeed, many companies talk a good game, primarily on the heels of high-profile incidents of anti-Black racism, about inviting “difficult conversations” and not settling for nonracist but instead committing to being antiracist, but most predictably retreat back to their happy place—prioritizing comfort over progress. “The responsibility for acknowledging Black History Month is thrust into the laps of Black staff who get little support or input from leaders,” insists Kike Ojo-Thompson, CEO and Founder KOJO Institute. Ensure that budgets consider not just external expenditures but also the requisite time and funding to support the planning process. As a result, many organizations miss an important opportunity to acknowledge and honor Black history and culture and instead awkwardly stumble through a series of disjointed events that feel like afterthoughts and tragically reinforce the absence of any holistic, sustained commitment to antiracism. Too often this area of scholarship is minimized, and that is reflected in BHM programming budgets. Companies regularly plan conferences months, even a year, in advance but too often won’t start looking for Black History month programming until after the holidays (or worse yet after MLK Day), and that’s a problem. The Bottom Line: Appropriately celebrating Black History month is low hanging fruit.

A Proclamation on National Black History Month, 2023 | The White ... (The White House)

During the height of the COVID-19 crisis, my Administration provided relief to hardworking families, which cut the rate of poverty in Black American communities ...

BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim February 2023 as National Black History Month. I restored the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, appointing top attorneys to oversee enforcement of civil rights laws, and the Department has doubled the voting rights enforcement staff. During National Black History Month, we honor and continue the work of Black Americans who have created a more fair and inclusive democracy, helping our Nation move closer to the realization of its full promise for everyone. From the start, the Biden-Harris Administration has been committed to using the power of the Federal Government to address the long-standing disparities that have hampered the progress of Black communities. Black Americans’ struggles for freedom, equal treatment, and the right to vote; for equal opportunities in education, housing, and the workplace; for economic opportunity, equal justice, and political representation; and so much more have reformed our democracy far beyond its founding. The struggles and challenges of the Black American story to make a way out of no way have been the crucible where our resolve to fulfill this vision has most often been tested.
