Knicks Grind Out Overtime Victory Over Celtics | The Knicks Wall (The Knicks Wall)

Julius Randle exploded for 37 points, RJ Barrett hit a huge three, and the Knicks snagged an overtime victory over the Boston Celtics.

The good defense and movement were key for New York’s switching on defense and 14 rebounds against Al Horford, Robert Williams, and the rest of the Boston frontline. 28 minutes is normally great, but in a game that both went into overtime and saw Quickley carry some of the offense for a significant part of the game, it felt like he could have been used more. The dunks have been great lately, the shotmaking was great and as New York’s offense sputtered, Randle took it upon himself to get the ball and score. Boston tied the game up and went for a late game-winner. New York’s defense was the star of the show in the third, but the Randle-Brunson duo was an effective co-star. Quickley scored 15 points in the first half with a combination of outside shooting and impressive scoring within the arc.

Four takeaways as Celtics fall 120-117 to Knicks in overtime thriller ... (masslive.com)

The Celtics take on the Lakers at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in another nationally-televised game.

But the Celtics weren’t able to beat the Knicks in overtime as they lost their third straight game. Malcolm Brogdon and Grant Williams had tough shooting games, but Brogdon had big 3 down the stretch as he closed out the game for the Celtics. The Celtics also had multiple chances to push it to a two-possession game late in overtime, but they left the door for the Knicks. While the Celtics were a lot healthier Thursday, Joe Mazzulla still dipped into his bench for some production. Both Randle and Brunson are vying for the All-Star game as reserves, and each player can put Thursday’s game on their resume. But that’s when they finished the quarter on a 16-4 run to force overtime. But the Celtics weren’t able to finish off the victory, falling 120-117 to the Knicks on Thursday at TD Garden. The Knicks heated up themselves and forced a game from there, erasing their deficit in the second quarter. Julius Randle had 37 points and nine rebounds while Jalen Brunson added 29 points and seven assists for the Knicks. The newly-minted All-Star starter started 5-for-5 from the floor for 12 points before sitting for his usual break midway through the first quarter. New York turned it up in the third quarter, where it outscored Boston 33-25. But the Knicks weren’t going away easily, putting up what was their own 13-point lead in the fourth quarter.

They'll look to join Tatum -- and likely Brown -- at the All-Star Game next month in Salt Lake City. That label belonged to the Knicks tandem of Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson, who tallied 37 and 29 points respectively. That still wasn't enough to hide what was one of the worst offensive performances in recent memory for the C's. Tatum dropped 11 in the quarter to help force overtime, though he failed to come through with the buzzer-beater at the end of the regulation. Williams was on the floor in the first quarter when the Celtics took a 15-point lead, and he was on the floor while the Celtics clawed back from a 12-point deficit. The Celtics and Knicks? “Obviously it’s an honor to represent your organization, your family, and the people who have supported you through the highs and the lows like moments like these. And so we just have to do that all the time.” Thursday’s loss marked the second time this season that the Celtics lost three games in a row. In between their strong start and finish, the Celtics’ bench in particular struggled mightily. The Celtics slowed down every Knicks possession and forced them into high-pressure shots late in the shot clock. Tatum finished with 35 points and led the offensive charge down the stretch as the Celtics roared back from a 12-point deficit with 4:48 remaining. “We’ve got the utmost confidence in him,” Jayson Tatum said. “I didn’t get it going, didn’t give my teammates enough energy to get the win, and that’s what happens when you don’t come out and give your best. He’s shooting a career high in free-throw percentage and attempts, but he still isn’t the steadiest free-throw shooter on the team. It was also Brown who defended Knicks guard Jalen Brunson so well late in regulation as the Celtics rallied back from a double-digit deficit in the final minutes to force overtime.

The Knicks are What They're Supposed to Be | The Knicks Wall (The Knicks Wall)

For all the consternation and discourse this season, the Knicks are right on track with their more optimistic pre-season projections.

So, while New York is still a ways away from truly contending for a championship, they are headed in the right direction and aren’t an easy out by any means. Considering the teams that are ahead of them in the Eastern Conference they are exactly where they’re supposed to be and could easily leapfrog or fall behind the three or four teams they are in fighting with for positioning. The East is extremely difficult this year – for context, the Knicks are currently the seventh seed; if they were playing in the Western Conference they’d be tied for the fourth seed. There is always much discourse about the New York Knicks and the never-ending debates about how the team should be run or what direction they should take when it comes to the draft and free agents and trades, but at the end of the day, that’s all speculation and hypotheticals. The Knicks have had some heartbreaking losses and some exhilarating victories. The Knicks have played an even 50 games thus far and are 27-23.

An early look at what free agents could help the Knicks level up this ... (The Strickland)

The New York Knicks rank seventh in the NBA in offensive rating and 14th in defensive rating (all numbers c/o Basketball-Reference unless otherwise indicated).

They get to the line a ton, they’re a top rebounding team on both sides of the glass and they simply don’t turn the ball over. When you have a team that’s balanced on both ends – the ‘89 Knicks were sixth in offensive rating and 10th in defensive rating – you want to maintain being excellent at the things you do best. They’re not a great 3-point shooting team, but they’re 10th in attempts from deep; if you’re gonna play the lottery, best to buy a lotta tickets. In 1989, that meant playing at a top-five pace, making the most 3-pointers in the league while giving up the fifth-fewest and forcing the second-most turnovers. A year later, the Knicks got off to a 35-17 start. The last time the Knicks finished with a top-10 rating on both ends was 1988-89, when Rick Pitino’s Bomb Squad won 52 games and came within a Michael Jordan of the conference finals.

Immanuel Quickley and Jalen Brunson are making their mark as New York rides the lead-swing wave.

“(It’s) just not being afraid of contact,” Brunson said. Remove him from the roster and the Knicks would be dead last in charges drawn. It’s an NBA ritual for players to release 75-footers just barely after the buzzer sounds. Quickley goes for the element of surprise. It’s the first time this season the Knicks have come back from a 15-point deficit to win. This is the other side of the NBA’s lead-swing tomfoolery. The Knicks were down 15 early but roared back in the second quarter.

Knicks' Wrong Pat Riley Move Helped Heat Win 3 Championships (ClutchPoints)

The New York Knicks haven't won an NBA championship since 1973. But that could've changed if they just listened to their head coach.

He asked for a 10-year, $50 million contract, 20% ownership of the team, a limo service to and from games, $300 per diem, and for Arison to buy his homes near Los Angeles and New York. The Knicks offered him a five-year, $15-million extension, which would’ve made him the highest-paid coach in the NBA. Before Riley took over, the Knicks were a sub-.500 team and were swept by the Chicago Bulls in the first round. Once Riley realized the Knicks were never going to budge, he began to explore his options discreetly. 16, 1995, Heat owner Micky Arison had a meeting with Riley the morning before the game. They went 51-31 and were a win away from knocking out the Bulls in the semifinals his first year, made the conference finals in Year 2, and in Year 3, the Knicks were a win away from winning the NBA championship.
