Short of a sign and trade, Brooklyn's choices are to give him a long-term deal or lose him for nothing. [According to Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10063026-ball-is-in-the-nets-court-as-kyrie-irving-seeks-long-term-extension), Irving wants to stay with the Nets, who, to this point, have not communicated a similar desire. Don't think for a second that the Nets, and every other team that might possibly be interested, aren't considering the possibility of Irving returning to his radioactive ways the moment he has his long-term deal. [Nets](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/teams/BKN/brooklyn-nets/), who were presumably ready to play out this season with Irving and then wash their hands of him by letting him walk as a free agent, be ready to sign up for another long-term contract with the guy? [Kyrie Irving](/nba/players/1779901/kyrie-irving/) was considered too toxic to even be around his own team back in early November, his market value was in the tank. The [Lakers](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/teams/LAL/los-angeles-lakers/) would've had an easier time offloading [Russell Westbrook](/nba/players/1622555/russell-westbrook/) than Brooklyn would've had getting rid of Irving.

The Sixers seemed on the verge of collapse. Melton grabbed a clutch offensive board before kicking the ball out to Maxey for a three that put the Sixers ahead 131-124. He also slammed in a dunk after cutting along the baseline and catching a Maxey lob. While that moment likely felt like a personal win for Niang, the Nets kept on scoring at a high rate and trimmed the Sixers’ lead to six points on a Markieff Morris jumper over Harden. As for Simmons, he increased his offensive aggression in the third quarter, making a righty hook and two free throws. Embiid sealed Simmons in the paint and drew a foul on him at the 9:07 mark of the first quarter. Of course, Embiid being Embiid, he also drew three fouls on Claxton early in the third and helped ensure the Sixers’ offense didn’t lose any serious steam. Shake Milton also played an integral role in the Sixers’ success late in the first and early in the second quarter with an all-bench lineup. He fired seven three-pointers in the first half and made five of them. Irving actually forced the Sixers’ first turnover, intercepting a Harden entry pass to Embiid and then assisting a Joe Harris three-pointer in transition. Brooklyn began 9 for 10 from the floor and knocked off an early nine-point deficit when Curry sunk a corner three on his first possession. The Sixers (and the home fans) continued to like the look of that matchup.

PHILADELPHIA -- In the latest battle of friends turned enemies, Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers took this round from Ben Simmons and the Nets on.
The Nets had entered the night a game and a half back of the 76ers in the Eastern Conference standings and had won two straight after snapping a four-game skid. He scored 10 of his total points in the third quarter. Simmons and Embiid were caught talking by the TV broadcast as the third quarter had been getting underway. It’s just when we get on the court, we definitely want to beat each other, and I love those types of environments and when you come to Philly, we know what it’s gonna be: a lot of chirping, very physical, the refs could be going either which way and we’ve just got to adjust. Five straight points from former Net James Harden quickly broke the tie and a driving dunk by Harden gave Philadelphia some cushioning with less than 30 seconds left in the game. In the end of what turned into a spirited matchup between two Eastern Conference opponents, the Nets just didn’t have the juice to hold off the high-powered Philadelphia offense in a 137-133 loss at Wells Fargo Center.
The Brooklyn Nets could make three notable veteran players available in a trade, including Seth Curry, Joe Harris and Patty Mills.
Curry is making $8.5 million this season and will be a free agent next season. Harris has one more season left on his current contract, which pays him $18.6 million this season and $19.9 million next season. He is still set to miss at least another two weeks, but Brooklyn is hoping to have him back before too long. He has seen very little playing time recently, which is one reason the Nets probably wouldn’t mind trading him. The Brooklyn Nets have gotten their act together on the court and could be looking to improve ahead of the trade deadline. He mentioned veterans Joe Harris, Seth Curry and Patty Mills as potential trade chips.

The Nets head back to Brooklyn on Thursday for the second half of a back-to-back against Detroit. Philadelphia punched back with a pair of stepback threes from Harden, and then a Harris make in transition gave the Sixers the 6-point lead once more with just over two minutes remaining. Simmons kept the aggression in fourth, again attacking Harrell in transition for a flip shot. Jacque Vaughn was forced to call timeout at the 7:17 mark when Tyrese Maxey crossed up Claxton on a stepback three and Montrezl Harrell posted up a mismatch for a layup. Seth Curry was the high man for the Nets in his revenge game after getting traded along with Ben Simmons from Philadelphia to Brooklyn a season ago for James Harden. However, the Sixers made up for the deficit and then some by getting to the line 36 times and made a vastly impressive 35 of those total attempts. Then he rampaged toward the rim on a gorgeous little flip shot for 6 quick points. Philadelphia was able to build a 10-point that they sustained throughout the rest of the quarter, ending the half ahead 75-65. Brooklyn went down the wire with the Philadelphia 76ers in what was a very chippy (and long!) game but ultimately fell short, losing 137-133. In what was a high-scoring first quarter, three-point shooting (75% for Brooklyn; 66.7% for Philadelphia) from both teams tied the ballgame at 41 each. The Nets, meanwhile, went just 14-of-26 from the charity stripe. He finished 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists but went completely scoreless in the first half.
Kevin Durant leads Brooklyn into a matchup against Detroit averaging 29.7 points per game.

The Brooklyn Nets head coach Jacque Vaughn broke down what the goal for Ben Simmons is after Wednesday's loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Did you try to get to the paint this entire group? I’m seeing flashes, I think we’re all seeing flashes, we just want him to keep it up, keep up the good work.” We just want to continue to hammer home that our best team effort is when we’re all playing well and staying aggressive and just taking shots that the defense is giving us." For Brooklyn, the team wants Simmons to play with force on each possession. “Just don’t lose confidence in him and look him eye to eye and just hold him accountable. Welcomed with roaring boos when he stepped foot on the Wells Fargo Center in front of his former fanbase, it took a while for Simmons to become aggressive.
In the third quarter against Joel Embiid and the 76ers, Ben Simmons provided the kind of lift the Nets have been seeking from him all along.
Where you feel him on both ends of the floor and he imposes his will and has an impact on every single possession, which he has the ability to do. And he remains outwardly confident that Simmons will return to a higher level of play in the second half of the season. "And look him eye to eye and just hold him accountable. in terms of Ben, we just want him to continue to be aggressive and when he figures it out, he figures it out. "Encouragement can look many different ways, we just want to continue to hammer home that our best team effort is when we're all playing well and staying aggressive and just taking the shots that the defense is giving us ... "And just because you played the first half doesn't mean you're going to play the second half. The Nets have repeatedly stood behind Simmons publicly, dating back to last season, when he wasn't able to play because of a back injury sustained before being traded from the Sixers. Ben showed more ability to play with force in the second half, which paid off, which is what we need, which was great for our team." He has shown that he still has the ability on both ends of the floor to be a difference-maker for a team with championship aspirations. In the first half Wednesday night in his first game against former teammate Embiid since he was traded, Simmons struggled to find a rhythm. But he has also shown to be far from the player he was for the 76ers alongside But when reading between the lines of Vaughn's commentary recently, it's clear that he would like to see more from the max-contract big man.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers played host to the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday in another emotionally charged atmosphere at the Wells Fargo Center.
There was a different aggression from the big fella when Simmons switched on to him. Whoever’s in front of me, it’s always the same aggression and it’s always the same aggression as far as trying to score the ball. “Obviously, it was about the Sixers and the Nets and I felt the game, we could have been better. This was the first time Embiid and Simmons went at each other and when Simmons was switched onto Embiid, the entire arena rose to a crescendo anticipating what would happen. Simmons didn’t play in the first matchup in March of 2022 and Embiid didn’t play in the second contest back on Nov. This was the first Joel Embiid vs.
Here's what happened between Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton and Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid during their heated exchange.
That's why he couldn't say it to my face again." "That's why when I walked up to his face, I told him to say it to my face again. He told me to repeat it, I repeated it and he walked up on me," said Claxton explaining his side of the heated exchange with Embiid on Wednesday night. That's why he looked away and he didn't say it again. He walks up on me, I get a tech, but I take it so it's a double tech. In their latest matchup on Wednesday night, there was a heated exchange that certainly matched the sellout crowd of 19,772 at Wells Fargo Center.
