'Everything Everywhere's Michelle Yeoh On Making Oscar History (Deadline)

In that moment, Yeoh made history as the first self-identifying Asian lead actress nominee in Academy history (Merle Oberon was nominated in 1936 for The Dark ...

Some patterns are breaking, and I feel really honored to be alongside her and alongside so all the principal cast in our movie and with so much of our crew. And I understand the need for our Asians to turn around and say, ‘We need this,’ because it just validates that we deserve to have a seat at the table, and we deserve to be part of all this.” “I was out auditioning left and right and I could not get one single job,” he said. “I was just so worried that [getting hired for Everything Everywhere] was a one-time thing and that’s it. And you need need it to be out there. During the pandemic, in the space between shooting the film and waiting for it to come out, Ke Huy Quan lost his health insurance because he could not get a job. And to be able to get to experience this together feels like some cycles are breaking, you know? Feeling awkward, Hsu asked the stewardess to re-set the plane’s system. You tell stories because it’s important for that story to be told. If she can do it, I can freaking well do it as well.’ That is the most important thing. Speaking with Deadline following the news, Yeoh said: “I think what I, “What it means to me, is all those Asians out there go, ‘You see, it’s possible. What about all those people who have such hopes and they’ve pinned their hopes and aspirations on you to tell us that we should be there?

Michelle Yeoh Becomes First Asian Best Actress Oscar Nominee (Hollywood Reporter)

It took 95 years, but Michelle Yeoh is now the first person who identifies as Asian to be nominated for best actress at the Oscars for 2023 show.

I totally understand.’ All this time, they’ve not been recognized, they’ve not been heard.” [Oscars](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/oscars/)’ best actress category is historically one of the [awards](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/awards/) body’s whitest and least diverse, certainly among the four acting races. Barely a dozen Black women have been nominated for best actress (the first was Dorothy Dandridge in 1955) and just four Latinas have received nods in the category (starting with Fernanda Montenegro in 1999), including Yalitza Aparicio, who also is only one of two Indigenous best actress nominees (the first being Keisha Castle-Hughes in 2004). That distinction goes to The Good Earth’s hardworking Chinese wife O-Lan, whose portrayer earned Oscar gold all the way back in 1938 at the 10th Academy Awards: the 100 percent white actress Luise Rainer. Likewise for double Oscar winner Vivien Leigh, who was born in British-colonized India and whose mother might have had partial Western Asian ancestry. And it’s taken 95 years for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize a woman who identifies as Asian in its best actress category. [Yeoh told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/michelle-yeoh-historic-2023-oscar-nomination-everything-everywhere-all-at-once-1235308400/) after the nominations were announced, speaking of the historic nod. Technicalities exist: Some recordkeepers consider Merle Oberon (1936, The Dark Angel) to be the first Asian best actress nominee, but she hid her ancestry (her mother was reportedly of partial Sri Lankan descent) and passed for white. [Everything Everywhere All at Once](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/everything-everywhere-all-at-once-sxsw-2022-1235108278/). But for the Academy, the achievement is even more consequential. And although past nominee Salma Hayek and winners Cher and Natalie Portman all have claims to some Western Asian heritage (Lebanon, Armenia and Israel/Russia, respectively), none has identified as Asian. The jig was up, but Oberon got a long, storied career and died with her secret intact. Oberon told people she was born in Tasmania, the far-flung Australian island state. But she was perhaps best known for her starring role as Cathy in the 1939 film “Wuthering Heights,” produced by Samuel Goldwyn. In a bid to succeed in an industry that often spurned people of color, especially women of color, Oberon obscured her birthplace and biracial identity. Oberon took her grandmother, Charlotte Selby, with her and had Selby pose as her maid. She also used skin-bleaching products, which employ chemicals to suppress the concentration of melanin that makes skin appear darker, according to the

After Michelle Yeoh gets nominated for an Oscar, an old interview of the actress found fame when she called Jackie Chan a "male chauvinistic pig".

Talking about her life in early Hollywood and the subsequent fame from Everything Everywhere All At Once, she was cut short by the fading music of the Golden Globes. [Michelle Yeoh](https://fandomwire.com/tag/michelle-yeoh/) stated that she too did her own stunts much like Jackie Chan did as the interview was allowed to end without any stereotypical or sexist comments coming into play. The Shang-Chi actress went on to further state that they are good friends and she calls Jackie Chan a male chauvinistic pig to his face. In an old and buried video, Michelle Yeoh was interviewed and asked about Jackie Chan. The interview, being very old, featured a 35-year-old Michelle Yeoh as she straight up began dissing Jackie Chan. With fame finally finding its way to the Supercop actress, an old interview of her was uncovered.
