Rui Hachimura trade makers perfect sense for Lakers (ClutchPoints)

The trade sending Kendrick Nunn and second-round picks to the Washington Wizards for Rui Hachimura is a win for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers added an unpolished but capable 3-and-D player who can help in the present and future — and did so without surrendering valuable assets. If he’s great and the Lakers want to sign him on the open market, they could be on the books for his $18.8 million cap hold. But, if they can negotiate a deal with Hachimura at a lower initial AAV and/or re-sign him at a figure below his cap hold, they can retain hordes of space to use on a supporting cast, or even a discount veteran star. Kyrie Irving?) Ironically, the best-case scenario for the Lakers may be Hachimura playing well enough to move the needle, but not so well that he becomes overly expensive. A glaring difference between the 2022-23 and 2021-22 squads is the former’s combination of motor, speed, and athleticism. Hachimura will be a restricted free agent, and the Lakers [per ESPN’s Kirk Goldsberry](https://twitter.com/kirkgoldsberry/status/1617580605562302464). Lakers need to add more than just Rui Hachimura before the NBA ... (Deadspin)

Los Angeles sent 3 second-rounders, Kendrick Nunn to the Washington Wizards in exchange for the 6-foot-8 wing.

If Pelinka is serious about rebooting the Lakers on the fly, Westbrook is still the most likely candidate to head for the exits. The Lakers have spent the offseason rehabilitating his stock, but he is what he is at this point. Ultimately, the Hachimura move should be just the start for a Lakers squad that’s been poorly constructed around James and Davis. The Washington Wizards considered a much different deal involving Rui Hachimura before agreeing to a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers.

[Marc Stein](https://marcstein.substack.com/p/latest-nba-trade-winds) reported last Saturday the Bucks and Miami Heat were still in the hunt. Windhorst added Phoenix "may have to lower their standard" because it had balked at the offers it received for Crowder in straight-up trades and preferred three-team swaps. Hachimura would've landed in Phoenix, with Jae Crowder going to the Bucks.

Lakers refuse to trade unprotected first-round pick for Bojan ... (LeBron Wire)

The Lakers still want to acquire Bojan Bogdanovic, but they're steadfast in their refusal to give up an unprotected first-round draft pick.

“The Lakers’ preference is to only give up a lottery-protected first for the 34-year-old Bogdanović, though that could change when up against the trade-deadline clock.” The Pistons want an unprotected first-round pick, while the Lakers only want to give up one with some sort of lottery protection. It still needs more 3-point shooting to space the floor for LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook, and Bogdanovic would fit the bill if the price is right.

The forward's potential and decent play give him some value, but it's understandable why Hachimura was unable to fetch a first round pick in return despite his status as a former top-10 pick and demand reportedly existing from multiple teams. That said, the now-Lakers forward is still young and developing and could improve in the coming seasons. "So this is a deal that was in the makings for a while." But despite being a finalist, Indiana did not land the 24-year old. The NBA trade deadline is February 9, which is just over two weeks away. Thus, they had less room for Hachimura in their rotation — the 24-year old is averaging 24.3 minutes per game this year, down from his career average of 27.8. Yesterday, the Washington Wizards traded forward Rui Hachimura to the Los Angeles Lakers for Kendrick Nunn and second-round draft picks in 2023, 2028, and 2029.

Lakers Rumors Roundup: Latest on Rui Hachimura, Cam Reddish (Silver Screen and Roll)

The Lakers' acquisition of Rui Hachimura not just kicked off trade season in the NBA, it also will impact what the team will do in the coming weeks before ...

With Patrick Beverley and Russell Westbrook still tradeable contracts and their first round picks available, there’s a possibility of a deal there, [even if the Lakers and Charlotte haven’t been linked](https://www.silverscreenandroll.com/2022/12/5/23495477/nba-trade-rumors-lakers-terry-rozier-three-team-donovan-mitchell-deal) in discussions in some time. One last noteworthy nugget that isn’t specifically linked to the Lakers but would be something worth noting is the situation in Charlotte. And for a Lakers team that has sported a number of 3- and 4-guard lineups, having someone taller than 6’4” on the wing is needed. However, in Pincus’ same article, Rui and his camp will head into free agency expecting that to be a realistic starting point for his next contract (emphasis mine). Let the remainder of his season in Los Angeles play out before getting worried about free agency and contract negotiations. There’s also another reason not to make the deal, and for the Lakers, it might be the more powerful argument. He’ll be a restricted free agent, taking up $18.8 million of the team’s potential cap space unsigned. The Lakers’ trade for Hachimura addressed a dire need for size on the wing that the roster has long had and only came at the cost of decluttering their crowdy backcourt, an added bonus. Nunn was one of only two contracts, along with Lonnie Walker IV, that could have been sent out in a one-for-one trade for Reddish. The soon-to-be 25-year-old Hachimura has the size (6 foot 8, 230 pounds), length (7-foot-2 wingspan) and athleticism that the Lakers desperately need in the frontcourt. Given Rui’s skill set, a front court of LeBron, Hachimura and Anthony Davis allows the latter to continue to play center without sacrificing spacing, a luxury this team hasn’t had. It’s a move that will have a ripple effect both across the league as it could signal the unofficial start of trade season as well as within the Lakers.

Why Lakers' Anthony Davis Trade Has Far Surpassed Clippers ... (Sports Illustrated)

The three biggest players in that offseason were the Brooklyn Nets, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers. All three teams made franchise-altering ...

SGA has blossomed into a superstar in this league at the age of 24. Because when it's all said and done, the Clippers' trade for Paul George is going to look a lot worse than the Lakers' trade for Anthony Davis, especially if the Clippers continue to fall short of a championship. As for the picks, the Pelicans traded the 2019 first-round pick from the Lakers for four picks, and did an incredible job of drafting. They also own the right to swap picks with the Lakers this season, and have another unprotected first-round pick next year (with the option to defer to 2025). The five first-round picks and two pick swaps are quite the haul, and will halt the Clippers' ability to draft consistently every year until 2026. He's played in just 35 games over the last two seasons, and has no timetable to return this season. Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis was reportedly looking for a trade, and the Lakers felt like the likeliest landing spot. But he’s been struck with the injury bug, playing in just 55 games last year, and 15 thus far this season. The Lakers entered the offseason after a disappointing first year of LeBron James in LA. Many felt like he was leaning towards the Lakers, however, on July 5, he made a shocking move, signing with the Clippers, and bringing another All-Star with him in Paul George. The Lakers have been under scrutiny for “mortgaging their future" for Davis, who may I add, helped the team win their 17th championship in franchise history. The 2019 offseason was one of the most influential summers in NBA history.
