Knicks Snap Losing Streak, Beat Cavs at The Garden | The Knicks ... (The Knicks Wall)

In a game that came down to the wire, the Knicks held off the Cavs at Madison Square Garden to snap their losing streak.

The Knicks’ defensive intensity was maintained early in the period and it was translating to easier looks on offense for them. Hartenstein had four points, nine rebounds, four assists, a steal and two blocks, while Deuce McBride had three points, three assists and a rebound. After Cleveland tied things up at 100 apiece with about two minutes to go, Randle hit a huge three-point shot to get New York back up by three late. The Knicks’ top performer was Randle, who had 36 points, 14 rebounds and four assists. The bench was able to keep the Knicks up as starters slowly trickled back onto the floor early in the second quarter. Even with Brunson struggling from the floor and as a facilitator, Quickley was able to fill in the holes. Both teams have gone in opposite directions as the season has progressed, with the Cavs sitting fairly high in the Eastern Conference’s standings and the Knicks slipping down due to a four-game losing streak leading into tonight. The Knicks needed to get back into rhythm on offense, and that meant passing the ball as they were in the first half. Turnovers were also an issue for the Knicks, as they committed three in the first few minutes of the quarter. Grimes also hit a timely three-pointer towards the end of the period that got the lead back for New York, with Randle hitting a last-second three-pointer himself to get the lead to five as they entered the fourth quarter. The New York Knicks (25-23) outlasted the Cleveland Cavaliers (29-20) by a final score of 105-103 in a tightly contested game. They finally won a close game at home and snapped their four-game losing streak against a strong Cleveland team in the process.

Who could Knicks get from Clippers in an Isaiah Hartenstein trade? (Posting and Toasting)

The Clippers may be interested in trading for Hartenstein who played for them last season.

The talented fourth-year guard is on a team that has a lot of depth. There was promise in the preseason that he could be a big man that knocks down some threes for the Knicks. He also is probably a better overall player than Quentin Grimes and has the potential of starting on this team. Roco is the type of player Tom Thibodeau can utilize as a two-way guy on both ends of the floor. Terance Mann finds himself in a unique situation on the Clippers. At six foot seven, he can be a valuable player for a Knicks team that needs wings. The second-year center out of Texas has a real opportunity to show his importance over the next month without Robinson. Sims is a better rebounder and will help ease off some pressure on Julius Randle on that end. In the two games since Robinson got hurt, coach Thibodeau has called upon another young center to step up. The 24-year-old Hartenstein spent last season in Los Angeles, where he averaged 8.3 points and 4.9 rebounds in 17.9 minutes per game. In 48 games this season, Hartenstein has averaged 4.9 points and six rebounds in 18.4 minutes per game. The Knicks' Bench Has Lost Their Spark | The Knicks Wall (The Knicks Wall)

For two years, the Knicks' bench, led by Immanuel Quickley and others, was their ace in the hole. That's not the case this season.

This bench unit is in desperate need of an overhaul, which is likely to come at the expense of Cam Reddish. The bench also does not have one person to rely on to make a big play or to run off a string of meaningful plays. Toppin could, justifiably, ask for a trade soon or by the end of the season given his underutilization as a solid wing on the Knicks bench – the third-year forward is averaging a measly 15.7 minutes per game, despite showing growth in nearly every area last year. Quickley and Rose unlocked Toppin in transition and with him as the team’s primary source of cutting and off-ball movement, and Quentin Grimes made his debut as a top defender on the team as well as a sharpshooter. He also has the length that the bench is sorely missing on defense in the wake of disappointing play from Hartenstein. Last year, though, Derrick Rose and Quickley proved to be much more of an active tandem on the floor, whereas this year Rose has been sat while Knicks brass seeks to move on from the veteran guard. In their playoff year, the Knicks bench was shooting 38.3% percent from deep, which provided a huge boost for them on offense and took some weight off what felt like the overloaded shoulders of Julius Randle. A look at the numbers could help to show the difference we actually saw between last year’s and this year’s bench so far. The Knicks added a few pieces to their bench that, on paper, seemed to be important upgrades. While New York’s starters, bolstered by the addition of Jalen Brunson and the resurgence of Julius Randle back to his All-Star form, have been able to score consistently, their bench has been a different story. But what are the differences between last year’s bench success and this year’s sputter? The thing about being reliable is that there is an inherent level of implied consistency to earning the label.

Knicks need to become a better crunch time team to remain in ... (Daily Knicks)

The Knicks have to be better in crunch-time situations if they want to be a serious threat in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

Close games are the difference between being a winning team come playoff time or getting bounced in the first round or the play-in tournament. There is no room for the Knicks to be poor in close games. If the Knicks are in a one-and-done situation, they cannot afford to blow close games when they have zero margin for error. As good of a closer as Brunson is, the Knicks as a whole just cannot close out games. I’m not saying this is all on Thibs, as Randle hasn’t been great in the clutch and the whole team has struggled to score in crunch time. Barrett should be getting the ball more in crunch time, as he has historically been incredibly clutch and was the only player against Toronto playing well in overtime, but it stretches farther than that.

A victory over the Cavaliers showed quiet competence, something the team has been lacking for years.

The key for Knicks to survive brutal stretch may just be teamwork ... (amNY)

Cleveland Cavaliers' Caris LeVert, right, drives past New York Knicks' RJ Barrett (9) during the first half of an NBA basketball game Tuesday, Jan.

They’ll travel to Boston on Thursday night to take on the Celtics and perhaps their new team-first mentality can assist with a major upset. In fact, six Knicks totaled three assists or more, with Immanuel Quickley leading the team with six. It had been 16 games since he had played more than 20 minutes, but he played the entire fourth quarter on Tuesday night over starter Jericho Sims and for good reason. 16: Quickley 15: Quickley In addition to the increased ball movement, Quickley’s emergence will be crucial for New York in their upcoming stretch. Randle operates out of isolation [the 9th-most of any player in the league](https://www.nba.com/stats/players/isolation?dir=D&sort=POSS_PCT), but is just a 62nd-percentile scorer in those situations, averaging 0.96 points per possession on 43.8% shooting from the field. On the season, With New York not having a true go-to scorer in isolation sets, they need this level of teamwork in order to overcome the defensive lapses that will occur without Robinson. They would push the lead to 13 before the Cavs made a run of their own, even taking a 73-70 lead late in the third. [the Knicks had the toughest remaining strength of schedule of any team in the NBA](https://twitter.com/alanhahn/status/1617912237829787653?s=46&t=PdKYXWTJbgjXDYMjF_DyOg). While it’s prudent to not overreact to one game, the win could help identify the blueprint for how the Knicks can survive a brutal stretch of schedule without their defensive anchor.

Julius Randle had 36 points and 13 rebounds, and his eighth 3-pointer snapped a tie with 2:07 left as the New York Knicks beat the Cleveland Cavaliers ...

“If he dumps it off to Allen, it’s a 2, we go into overtime, but I was just trying to make a play and not foul at the same time.” Mitchell went to the ground and the Cavs batted the ball back out to Mobley, whose jumper missed. Randle had five 3-pointers and 17 points in the first 9 1/2 minutes and the Knicks led 34-27 after one quarter. Cleveland had two chances to tie or cut it to one, but Mitchell was blocked first by Barrett and then by Isaiah Hartenstein on the next possession. The Cavs got the ball back after a shot-clock violation and Mitchell drove into the lane but was stopped again by Hartenstein. “So sometimes you fall short and then you’ve got to work your way out of it.”

The Warriors, currently one game under .500, are finding it hard to strike a balance between their two different timelines — their remaining championship window and their future.

Steve Ballmer, as stated, is willing to spend whatever it takes to have a winning product on the court, and he has the capital to back it up. There is a lot that will go into that decision as he has been at the helm for the Warriors for 12 seasons. New York is desperate for a winning team, and some progress has been made with Leon Rose leading the way. Could the architect for the Warriors’ dynasty look to move on this offseason for another job? How big of a splash they are willing to make is anyone’s guess, but you can be sure that Bob Myers will do whatever it takes to improve the team. The team has struggled to find its footing this season as Stephen Curry is the only one consistently playing up to his potential and expectations.
