At least four people were killed in one nursery and three at another, authorities said. Zhao Chunli, 67, was arrested in connection with the shootings.

Police arrested 67-year-old Zhao Chunli of Half Moon Bay shortly after 4 p.m. Four victims were found dead on San Mateo Road, and three more victims were later discovered at a second site in the 2100 block of Cabrillo Highway South, Corpus said during a news conference. Seven people were killed and one was critically injured in related shootings across two locations in Half Moon Bay, Calif., on Monday, San Mateo Sheriff Christina Corpus said.

The police arrested a 67-year-old suspect, who the county sheriff said was “fully cooperating.”

A volunteer asked a police officer standing guard at the door what size diapers they needed. Sheriff Corpus said the police believed the suspect was a worker at the plant nursery where one of the attacks occurred. Sarah Prentice, 31, started crying while on her way to the center to drop off blankets. Video of the substation parking lot where the suspect was arrested shows three police officers pulling him from a maroon S.U.V. Lorena González Fletcher, president of the California Labor Federation, said that many farmworkers in the region were in a vulnerable position because they have low wages and are often on temporary work visas or are undocumented. The gunman drove from one site to the other, she said, and a semiautomatic handgun was found in his vehicle. The sheriff’s office said late Monday that it was working to identify the victims and notify their families. “The amount of stress that’s been on this community for weeks is really quite high.” The beaches are a popular surfing destination, and the inland mountains are home to one of the state’s oldest agricultural communities, which employs migrant workers. There were children on the scene at the incidents. The local authorities were working with the F.B.I. Eamonn Allen of the sheriff’s department.

Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in the latest tragic shooting in Half Moon Bay, California. For the second time in recent.

Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in the latest tragic shooting in Half Moon Bay, California. I once again urge both chambers of Congress to act quickly and deliver this Assault Weapons Ban to my desk, and take action to keep American communities, schools, workplaces, and homes safe. Yesterday, Senator Feinstein — alongside Senators Murphy, Blumenthal and others — reintroduced a federal Assault Weapons Ban and legislation that would raise the minimum purchase age for assault weapons to 21.

Two of the seven victims killed in the shootings in Half Moon Bay have been identified and authorities are working to notify the families.

“Here in San Mateo County, he wasn’t a red flag for us, nothing to put him on our radar,” she said. The weapon believed to have been used in the incident, a semiautomatic handgun, was found inside his car. Jail records showed the suspect was being held in San Mateo County’s Maguire Correctional Facility. Video from KGO-TV showed deputies taking a man to the ground in the parking lot. Police arrested the suspect, identified as Chunli Zhao, 67, after he was discovered in his car at the San Mateo County sheriff’s substation in Half Moon Bay at about 4:40 p.m. “All the evidence we have points to this being the instance of workplace violence.”

Half Moon Bay shooting labeled 'workplace violence,' suspected shooter's dark history comes to light (Pacifica Tribune)

HALF MOON BAY — A day after a mass shooting at two mushroom farms shook this seaside community, horrific details began to emerge of farm workers hiding in portable toilets as a suspected gunman with a dark history opened fire, killing seven.

“Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in the latest tragic shooting in Half Moon Bay,” Biden said in a statement. Allen added that his office has been “providing her resources” and considering her welfare in the aftermath of the shooting. Eamonn Allen said there is also a “very real concern of retribution” against Zhao’s wife, who lived on the mushroom farm with the suspected shooter. “It’s jarring, it’s tragic and it’s senseless,” Berman said. “He asked me to give him the number for the Mexican consulate to see about getting a passport to go back home and visit family,” said Juarez Perez. Monday’s rampage echoes the Bay Area’s deadliest mass shooting when a disgruntled Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority employee shot and killed nine of his coworkers in 2021. Court records suggest he may have been prone to violence, attempting to suffocate and threatening to “split (the) head” of a former roommate. “I’m a store owner, so I see them all the time,” said Melgar. “They’re fearful about their livelihoods, fearful for their families, and (there is) a great deal of trauma.” “I remember (they) would come in and buy the normal stuff, tortillas, tomatoes, bread and things,” said Melgar, who had tears streaming down her face. The violent spat in March 2013 was tied to a dispute over Zhao’s losing his job at a San Jose restaurant and being told he’d have to pick up his final paycheck at the restaurant. Evidence so far “points to this being an instance of workplace violence,” the San Mateo sheriff’s office said.
