7 takeaways as short-handed Celtics go cold late, fall to Heat (Boston.com)

The Celtics lost their second in a row, punctuated by Jayson Tatum's late turnover. Celtics Heat Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum takes a shot against Miami ...

Not for the first time (or the second time, or the third time) this season, Derrick White showed the wide range of value he provides the Celtics when he’s on the floor. Playing in an expanded role, White finished with 23 points on 7-for-17 shooting with six assists and scored in a variety of ways — splitting apart Miami’s zone for a number of floaters, while burying a pair of 3-pointers and working his way to the free-throw line eight times. The national TV crowd will get a huge dose of the league’s best team over the next few weeks. Tatum finished with just three points, and the last of his seven turnovers — which came at the end of a confusingly lengthy iso possession — was one of the worst crunch-time plays we can remember. Jayson Tatum scored 31 points on 9-for-18 shooting, recorded seven assists, and was excellent in the second and third quarters, but the Heat effectively froze him out of the fourth after he returned from his usual rest at the start. That includes the Celtics’ next game. They trust me in that situation to make the right play. but again, I’ve got to put up a better play that kind of allows him to see that better. Regardless of being in a double team or not, I can’t let us down like that.” And still, the Celtics had multiple chances late. And yet, they still had every opportunity to steal a game from a scuffling Heat team that couldn’t buy a bucket from 3-point range. Then the Celtics missed 10 straight field goals, going completely scoreless for nearly six minutes.

Four takeaways as Celtics fall to Heat 98-95 after fourth quarter ... (masslive.com)

It was the second straight loss for Boston who played without Marcus Smart (ankle), Jaylen Brown (groin), Al Horford (back) and Malcolm Brogdon in the matchup.

Payton Pritchard and Derrick White looked completely gassed as they tried to create for a stagnant Celtics offense on the second half of the back-to-back, managing just 13 points in the final frame including nine consecutive misses in one stretch. Back-to-back winning streak comes to an end: The Celtics entered Tuesday’s game 7-0 in back-to-back games this year and looked primed for their eighth straight victory after a strong opening 40 minutes. Miami went on a 15-0 run midway through the fourth quarter as Boston went scoreless for over six straight minutes in the stretch. He also overcame some foul trouble midway through the third quarter to post a double-double while getting to the free throw line for the 19th time this season. Derrick White (23 points, 6 assists) also stood out as all five starters scored in double figures which put Boston in position to win as they opened up a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter. Jimmy Butler was a late scratch as well for Miami due to a lower back injury but the Celtics still maintained control for much of the game due to Jayson Tatum (31 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists).

Rumor: Celtics interested in Willy Hernangomez (CelticsBlog)

It's only been a year since the Boston Celtics traded away his brother.

Hernangomez is currently in the second season of a three-year, $7.3 million contract. As such, you could be hard-pressed to see Boston move for a player who is already disgruntled due to a lack of playing time, especially when his role would likely be to play backup to Williams and Kornet. Celtics trade rumors: Willy Hernangomez drawing interest as center ... (masslive.com)

Brad Stevens could turn to the brother of a recent former Celtic for some added center depth.

He’s very cheap ($2.4 million salary for this season) and is under team control for next year ($2.5 million team option) which would fit in nicely for a pricy Boston payroll. Those guys are getting their rest days but Mazzulla is still having to lean on both a little too much when healthy. [Massachusetts sports betting](https://www.masslive.com/betting/massachusetts/)is coming soon. The elder Hernangomez has spent his last three seasons with the Pelicans after playing with the Hornets and Knicks early in his career. The 6-foot-11 center has solid numbers on the year (6.9 points, 4.6 rebounds over just 11.9 minutes per game) but has only played 22 contests amid a crowded Pelicans depth chart.

Celtics vs. Heat takeaways: Fourth-quarter rut costs shorthanded C's (NBC Sports Boston)

The Celtics led by as many as 14 points, but they blew it in the fourth quarter as they fell to the Heat on Tuesday night, 98-95. We share our takeaways ...

The game ended on a Jayson Tatum turnover, and it was a fitting ending for a Celtics team that has struggled with taking care of the basketball lately. While the ending wasn't ideal, it still was a strong showing for a player who has stepped up time and time again for Boston when called upon to take on an increased role. He had a game-high seven on the night with his last one being the biggest blunder. It didn't work in the C's favor as Tatum walked the ball up the court and turned the ball over to effectively put the nail in the coffin. Those factors -- and the one below -- were the difference between a hard-fought win and a devastating loss. Boston finished with only 13 points in the quarter. The entire quarter was a nightmare on both ends of the floor for Boston. With 20 seconds left in the game and the C's down two, Mazzulla elected to play it out. Here are our takeaways from the C's second straight loss, which brings them to 35-14 on the season. Haywood Highsmith also did his part in Butler's absence with 15 points off the bench. Derrick White stepped up as the secondary scorer Boston needed with Brown out as he tallied 23 points. The result: a 98-95 Heat victory.

Streak snapped: 10 Takeaways from Boston Celtics-Orlando Magic (CelticsBlog)

Boston's struggles against Orlando continued as their nine-game win streak came to an end.

Boston heads further south to Miami to close out this three-game trip in a back-to-back on Tuesday. Boston was just 16-of-32 in the paint, including 10-of-17 at the rim. The Celtics struggles against them are odd, to say the very least. Somewhat related to the above: The Orlando Magic looked like the poised, veteran team down the stretch. He just needs to play and let the others handle the officials. Moving on to the Ugly section, we have to start with Grant Williams and his incessant complaining. He’s very important to Boston with his versatility on both ends of the floor. Orlando had 54 points in the paint, compared to just 32 for Boston. The Magic shot 27-of-45 in the paint, including 20-of-31 at the rim. To this point in his career, Payton Pritchard has been asked to hit shots and to be a pest on defense. He was a key rotation guy to open the season. The Magic were good about pushing and attacking against a non-set defense.

Why Celtics said 'unorthodox' Magic give them issues after 3 straight ... (masslive.com)

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Celtics are still comfortably in first place in the East, they're favored to go back to the NBA Finals and they're one of the best teams ...

Luckily for Boston, it doesn’t have to see Orlando for the rest of the season. But the carelessness was too much to overcome for the Celtics, and they paid the price as the Magic’s length bugged them all night. They play a lot of bigs, a lot of length. — The Celtics are still comfortably in first place in the East, they’re favored to go back to the NBA Finals and they’re one of the best teams in the league. The win improved Orlando’s record to 18-29 on the season, meaning a sixth of the team’s wins have come solely against the first-place Celtics. Orlando never looked back, and for the third straight game, the Magic beat the Celtics, [this time in a 113-98 victory at Amway Center](https://www.masslive.com/celtics/2023/01/four-takeaways-as-celtics-fall-113-98-to-magic-see-9-game-win-streak-snapped.html).

Jonathan Isaac's return helps Magic upset league-leading Celtics (SB Nation)

Plus a career high 42 from Jalen Green on a night where the NBA's future took centerstage.

He’s now on a career-best streak of four games in double-digit scoring and has hit multiple threes in three straight games, which is also a career-best streak. Markkanen has to be a lock for Most Improved Player at this point and should be a lock for the All-Star Game as well. Monday, he peacefully thrived, posting 37 points (12-19 FG, 7-11 3P) and 12 assists (just three turnovers) in only 31 minutes. Alperen Sengun thrived again as well with 21 points (8-12 FG), seven rebounds, and seven assists all before gifting us with a fun moment from the locker room postgame: Boston came in on a nine-game winning streak but couldn’t sustain the success in the absences of Marcus Smart and Robert Williams while only getting average nights from Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown (26 points each). Still only 25 years old, Isaac is starting to seem like a senior citizen on this Orlando roster, but that youth stood out in this win as their young starting frontcourt gave the Magic three of their four leading scorers — Paolo Banchero (23 points), Wendell Carter Jr. Sacramento has now won seven of their last eight games and are by all accounts a true contender. He thrived in the 10 minutes he did play on Thursday, scoring 10 points in as many minutes while nabbing two steals as well. Atlanta, meanwhile, sits right at .500, just 1.0 game ahead of Chicago while both are in the East’s play-in picture. Milwaukee as a whole outscored Detroit 49-24 in the first and scored 30+ in each following quarter. But the influx of young talent in the league right now is bonkers. Giannis Antetokounmpo played just eight and a half first quarter minutes, but that was plenty of time for him to score 20 of his team-high 29 points on the night.
