Before Tuesday's nominations, enjoy Vulture's official predictions for the eight biggest Oscar races: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, ...
The remains of the fray include underwhelming titles like She Said, which got in at BAFTA, and Top Gun: Maverick, which nobody enjoyed for its screenplay. I could see any of the five women named above winning the Oscar, and I could see any of them getting snubbed. Original is the more stacked of the two writing categories this season, and it seems likely that the lineup will be filled out with four Best Picture heavyweights. Only two of the SAG five made it into Oscar’s Supporting Actress category last season, and we could be in for more surprises this year. Bassett’s televised triumphs at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice have made her the closest thing we have to a front-runner, but with Wakanda Forever on the edge of the Best Picture race, anything could happen. If you’re a Globe and SAG nominee whose movie isn’t in the Best Picture race, you’re at risk of losing your seat to a secondary player from a major contender. The rest of the category is so unsettled that I expect we’re in for some surprises. Tom Cruise of Top Gun: Maverick has his fans, but his easy charisma in that film is the opposite of the effortful acting the Academy typically rewards. The edge goes to Aftersun, which has been inspiring effusive reactions that seem to have even surprised its own team, and Mescal, who has quickly become one of the industry’s most in-demand leading men. Hugh Jackman of The Son was The Way of Water’s James Cameron has visual razzle-dazzle on his side, but he may be dinged for merely iterating on the process that earned him a nomination for the original Avatar. And yet at the same time the Academy has become much more global than in the past, allowing little films like last year’s Drive My Car to become big players in the awards race.

Want to be among the first to know if Rihanna, Lady Gaga and/or Taylor Swift are nominated for best original song at the 2023 Academy Awards? The show will be broadcast from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the Oscars’ usual home since 2002. The ceremony will be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner, with Weiss also serving as director. Here are the categories that will be announced starting at 8:30 a.m. Actor-producer Riz Ahmed and actress Allison Williams will host the announcement in a live presentation from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif. Nominations in all 23 categories will be announced in a global livestream beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Possible Oscars nominations shockers include everything from an actress changing categories to Adam Sandler getting his first nod.
Enter “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On”: the other A24 film exceeding all expectations, breaking into the Best Animation Feature race as soon as it was clear it qualified. Many have considered this a weak year for the Best Adapted Screenplay race, with even frontrunner Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” not being a surefire bet for a Best Picture nomination. One could posit that the Screen Actors Guild was not a fan of the choice, opting to not nominate the star in its Female Actor in a Leading Role category, even though her submission into the Best Actress race was by her own request. It is certainly a hit with European members of the Academy given its success at the European Film Awards in December, and its several BAFTA nominations. The fifth Best Actor slot has been impossible to pin down, with superstars like Tom Cruise (“Top Gun: Maverick”) and Tom Hanks (“A Man Called Otto”) in the mix, but those two actors have been snubbed by the Academy much more often, and have done far less campaigning. Yes, it would be recency bias of the highest order, but it would also be an indicator that enough Academy members are at least attempting to watch and consider the smaller films people flag to them. Though it would be a “surprise” people are still kind of anticipating, the nomination would say a lot about how one can campaign for an award without a proper budget for it. Of course, the film was dealt a blow by India opting to instead make “Last Film Show” its official Best International Feature Film entry, but the packed FYC screenings never stopped, and the movie now has a few awards under its belt including the Critics Choice Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and most of all, the New York Film Critics Circle award for Best Director. For example, given all the recognition they have received from awards bodies that include Academy voters, it would truly be a shock not to see “TÁR” star Cate Blanchett or “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Michelle Yeoh nominated for Best Actress. Carter), and it is easy to see how the Disney release is a plausible candidate for a Best Picture nomination. Add in the fact that “Wakanda Forever” tied “All Quiet on the Western Front” for most appearances on the 2023 Oscars shortlist, and how it is already favored to win two Academy Awards come March (Best Supporting Actress to Angela Bassett and Best Costume Design to Ruth E. Not only is the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe entry the biggest November opening of all time, it is also currently nominated for the PGA Awards’ equivalent of Best Picture (an important Oscars bellwether).

What did they love but have to leave off the list? What made the cut? Will “The Fabelmans” regain its momentum? Will “Everything Everywhere All at Once” continue its roll? The The nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce this year's nominees beginning at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, and you can watch it live here.
Last year, Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) won the Oscar for directing. There is little reason to think that any of the other artists involved in “Emancipation,” including Fuqua, will fare any better. [Emancipation](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/18/business/media/will-smith-emancipation-apple-tv.html)” that they would at least nominate him. Specific plans for the show are still secret. This time around, Michelle Yeoh was expected to be nominated for best actress for playing a Chinese immigrant who discovers that she can jump between universes in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) and Viola Davis (“The Woman King”) were poised to join her in the category. For decades, women and people of color were almost entirely excluded from the category. Netflix may have to make do with closer to 15, with “ [All Quiet on the Western Front](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/27/movies/all-quiet-on-the-western-front-review.html)” and Guillermo del Toro’s lavishly campaigned “ [Pinocchio](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/07/movies/guillermo-del-toros-pinocchio-review-puppets-and-power.html)” leading the way. Awards prognosticators predicted that Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) would receive a supporting actor nomination. In 2021, nine of the 20 acting nominations went to people of color. The #OscarsSoWhite outcries from 2015 and 2016, prompted by all-white slates of acting nominees, continue to reverberate at the academy, which has been trying to diversify its membership by race, gender and nationality. For the last three years, Netflix has received more Oscar nominations than any other company, underscoring the rise of streaming services in Hollywood, especially as a platform for sophisticated films.

The current Oscar season is approaching its home stretch, as nominations for this year's Academy Awards are announced Tuesday morning.
“The Fabelmans” marks Williams’ fifth nomination. At the same time, adult-oriented movies such as “The Fabelmans,” “Tár,” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” have struggled at the box office during the pandemic. Ke Huy Quan, a former child actor best known for his work in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” earned a best supporting actor nomination for his work in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” A few years ago, Quan had given up on acting, convinced that his career in front of the camera was over. He will compete for the director prize against Spielberg, Todd Field (“Tár”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), and the directing duo of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). The last two best director winners, Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) and Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”), have been women, and there were some hopes that “Women Talking’s” Sarah Polley, “The Woman King’s” Gina Prince-Bythewood or “Aftersun’s” Charlotte Wells might receive best director nods. “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a twisty sci-fi adventure, led the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards on Tuesday morning, picking up 11 nods.

Many of these titles and names are front-runners we’ve been talking about since the season kicked off with the Venice and Telluride film festivals back in August and September. As widely expected, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, and the German war drama All Quiet on the Western Front led the morning, with nominations in best picture and a slew of below-the-line categories. “We aren’t fired yet,” joked Williams during the break between the first and second sets of nominations. Everything Everywhere All at Once led in total nominations, earning 11, followed by Banshees and All Quiet with nine each. They were also, for the awards obsessives who look forward to nominations like they do Christmas morning, a whole lot of fun.

War movies are big, first-time acting nominees had a great morning, and inclusion at the Oscars is still an uphill battle. All this, plus the big showing ...

It was also a difficult year for some of the most well-regarded Black artists in Hollywood. But it wasn't on most awards radar, and then it was, [as theories swirled about what connections might be behind the swell of support](https://www.vulture.com/2023/01/andrea-riseborough-to-leslie-oscar-buzz-timeline.html). [All Quiet on the Western Front](https://www.npr.org/2022/10/28/1132405481/movie-review-all-quiet-on-the-western-front), which is available on Netflix, is not breaking a lot of new ground as a war film for people who have seen the bloodiest sequences in Saving Private Ryan and the trench warfare of 1917. First-time nominees include new faces like Austin Butler ( Four acting nominations — for lead actress Michelle Yeoh, supporting actresses Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis, and supporting actor Ke Huy Quan — plus best picture, best directing, best original screenplay, best costumes and music and visual effects and editing, all add up to a huge haul for a movie that isn't quite like anything anybody has ever seen before. There were also some omissions that pained fans of individual artists as well as advocates for greater inclusivity in the Oscars. Nevertheless, it received nine nominations, including best picture, best international feature, and best adapted screenplay.
It's a record-setting year for performers of Asian descent. In the actress race, there's room for Andrea Riseborough but not Viola Davis or Danielle ...
[Michelle Williams](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/04/movies/michelle-williams-fabelmans.html) play Steven Spielberg’s mom in “The Fabelmans,” they were convinced she was our new supporting-actress front-runner. Then, just a few weeks later, [word broke](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/04/movies/michelle-williams-fabelmans.html) that instead of gunning for that easy win, Williams would be campaigned as the film’s leading actress. Tuesday added two more to the mix, as “Top Gun: Maverick” earned a solid six nominations (including an adapted screenplay nod that produced an audible reaction in the room where the nominations were read) and James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” took four. But [“Blonde” star Ana de Armas](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/28/movies/blonde-review-marilyn-monroe.html) did make it into the best actress lineup, and another Netflix movie surged into the best-picture race at just the right time … (The 1930 adaptation of Remarque’s novel won best picture at the third Academy Awards, don’t forget.) The German-language adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic World War I novel was a favorite of many Oscar voters I spoke to, and could even be a formidable threat to nomination leader “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” since it offers a more traditional awards pick than that multiverse-jumping mind-bender. Meanwhile, “The Fabelmans” auteur Steven Spielberg earned his ninth best-director nomination, tying Martin Scorsese for the second most nominations in that category, behind William Wyler’s 13. Deadwyler’s deeply felt performance as the mother of Emmett Till had suffered a few notable snubs this season from the Independent Spirit Awards and Golden Globes, but Davis had cruised through the season so far, earning nominations from the Globes, Screen Actors Guild, Critics Choice Awards and BAFTA. That strategy earned the 41-year-old British actress her first nomination, and proved that when it comes to Oscar season, it ain’t over till it’s over. Though the best actress race often favors ingénues, male up-and-comers aren’t always regarded so warmly: The best actor category is typically stacked with veterans over 40, and the same famous names are nominated an awful lot. Though two of the last three best-picture winners were directed by Asian filmmakers, the academy has fallen short when it comes to nominating performers of Asian descent: Films like “Parasite” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” failed to earn even a single nomination for their acclaimed actors. A single awards campaign can involve a monthslong gantlet of interviews, red carpets, screening Q&As and voter handshakes, and not every contender can charge all those appearances to a corporate credit card.
Actress Michelle Yeoh stands between Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan as they hold her back. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” received eleven Oscar nominations, ...
(I’m unfortunately sure that “ [Don’t Worry Darling](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-front-row/dont-worry-darling-is-so-much-more-than-hollywood-gossip-fodder),” one of the year’s best star-centric Hollywood films, will be rejected by the Academy, as it was by critics.) [Women Talking](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-front-row/women-talking-reviewed-a-sublime-script-a-merely-very-good-movie)” received a pair of nominations, for Best Picture and for its screenplay, and that the daring and subtle “ [Marcel the Shell with Shoes On](https://www.newyorker.com/goings-on-about-town/movies/marcel-the-shell-with-shoes-on),” a remarkable blend of stop-motion and live action, turns up as a nominee in the Animated Feature category. The overlap points to the very meaning of directing: the comprehensive influence on the work of everyone making a major contribution to the film at hand, from casting and the style of acting to the tone of lighting and the costumes and décor—and, of course, the script, whether or not the director is credited. Charlie Chaplin famously said that comedy is life in long shot and tragedy is life in closeup, and I’ve long thought that directors’ sense of distance is as important as that of timing. (The nostalgia that its success represents, above all, is for the Coen brothers’ early films—it catches something of their tone without their style, wit, or cinematic self-awareness.) The other international film to get a Best Picture nomination, “ [Triangle of Sadness](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-front-row/triangle-of-sadness-reviewed-were-on-a-yacht-and-were-puking),” is mainly in English, and its emotional world is painfully simplistic. Inasmuch as the Oscars are, eminently, aspirational—an image of what the industry prizes about itself and where it wants to be heading over all—what the list of nominees promises for slates of production in years ahead is fearsome. I’m keeping my list in this fantasyland in order to highlight the gap between what’s usually on the Academy’s radar and what’s going on in the world of movies at large. I’m against the individual branches making nominations in their categories; cinematographers, editors, actors have the knowledge and the understanding of their fields, but this practice results in a sort of guild protectionism that perpetuates norms instead of rewarding experiences. Jordan Peele is the Rodney Dangerfield of Hollywood—he gets no respect at all, at least, none since he won Best Original Screenplay for “ [Get Out](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/richard-brody/get-out-jordan-peeles-radical-cinematic-vision-of-the-world-through-black-eyes).” His, and his movies’, neglect is appalling and disturbing. [Nope](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-front-row/nope-is-one-of-the-great-movies-about-moviemaking)”—and it did not get nominated for anything. Bringing together Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, great actors whose talents have been underutilized because of the dearth of substantial roles for Asian performers, along with [Jamie Lee Curtis](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-new-yorker-interview/jamie-lee-curtis-has-never-worked-hard-a-day-in-her-life) (who has endured the ageism that most actresses confront) and the near-newcomer (to movies) Stephanie Hsu, deserves an Oscar in itself. So does the bushel of nominations for “
ANDREW LIMBONG, BYLINE: Hey, Leila. FADEL: OK, so tell us about "Everything Everywhere All At Once," which seems to have dominated the Oscars this year. LIMBONG ...
The guys up for best director are Martin McDonagh for "Banshees Of Inisherin," Steven Spielberg for "The Fabelmans," Todd Field for "Tar," Ruben Ostlund for "Triangle Of Sadness." Some of the other movies in the best picture running include big blockbusters like "Avatar: The Way Of Water" and "Top Gun: Maverick." And then, there's the Daniels, Kwan and Scheinert, for "Everything Everywhere." LIMBONG: On the male actors' side, Brendan Fraser was nominated for his role in "The Whale." And then, we've got "Tar," "Triangle Of Sadness," "The Banshees Of Inisherin," "Elvis" and "Women Talking," which is about a group of Mennonite women trying to decide what to do after they discover they'd been drugged and attacked by men in the community. The Oscar nominations are out, and the big movie of the morning is the weird and quirky "Everything Everywhere All At Once," which received 11 nominations. LIMBONG: The other big movie is the new adaptation of "All Quiet On The Western Front," directed by Edward Berger. I mean, it happened at the Golden Globes earlier, and it looks like it's happened again at the Oscars. And the way you two are dressed, I'm sure I'm not the only one calling him he - I mean, her him. And it's even got two nominees in the best supporting actress category for Stephanie Hsu, who, like I said, plays the daughter, and Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays an IRS auditor. But it's also a sci-fi, martial arts movie that involves, like, multiple dimensions, a number of alternate realities, and a decent number of butt jokes. YEOH: (As Evelyn Wang) You know me.
Here are snubs and surprises in the 2023 Oscar nominations, with a special focus on music categories.
Both halves of this popular Hollywood couple were in play for nominations for their work on the charming “small” film, A Man Called Otto. Two Black actresses were thought to have a good shot at nominations for best actress – Davis for The Woman King (a best picture nominee) and Danielle Deadwyler for Till. The snubs extended to the music categories, where Terence Blanchard’s shortlisted score for The Woman King failed to be nominated, as did “Stand Up,” Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II and Three of the songs that were shortlisted for best original song had more than four songwriters. She is seen as the front-runner to win in the category, 29 years after she was first nominated for playing Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It. [Billboard Hot 100](https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100) were nominated for best original song (Rihanna and Lady Gaga), but four other chart-toppers were shortlisted but failed to make the final five. Ryan Lott is this year’s only double nominee for best original song and best original score. He is up for best song for co-writing “This Is a Life” with David Byrne and Three years ago, the Icelandic composer won best original score for Joker. Like Desplat, Franglen was shortlisted in both music categories for his work on Avatar: The Way of Water. He won best original score 35 years ago for The Last Emperor, on which he collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cong Su. She has had far better luck at the Grammys, where she has amassed six song of the year nominations, which puts her in a tie with Paul McCartney and Lionel Richie for the most nods ever in that category.
