Nevertheless, Duke can salvage their season by winning most of their games down the stretch, and it starts with Virginia Tech tonight. Virginia Tech will look to spoil the season for Duke as they’ll be playing in front of a packed arena in Blacksburg. This game may be especially important for Virginia Tech to win and improve their season – the energy inside Cassell Coliseum will be electric come Monday night.

Duke basketball's road woes continue as Blue Devils fall to ... (Raleigh News & Observer)

Jon Scheyer's Blue Devils played Mike Young's Hokies at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg VA in college hoops. Dariq Whitehead injured.

Virginia Tech hit 17 of 25 shots in the first half (68%), including 7 of 10 3-pointers. While Virginia Tech missed three free throws, Filipowski hit three after being fouled attempting a 3-pointer. Down two points at that point, Duke intended to get Filipowski the ball for a shot. After a Duke timeout, Proctor hit an open 3-pointer with 38.5 seconds remaining tying the score at 75. The Blue Devils, though, closed the half in solid fashion. Basile scored five points during that stretch as Virginia Tech took a 63-59 lead. Mark Mitchell’s 3-pointer with 16:12 left tied the game at 51. Instead, Proctor was left open for a 3-pointer that he missed with 4.4 seconds to play. Cattoor hit three of those 3-pointers. Game officials reviewed the play and decided no flagrant foul occurred, even though Duke coach Jon Scheyer said Filipowski was in discomfort during a Duke timeout. “He got hit so hard that he was throwing up in the huddle,” Scheyer said. They had one of those nights they made plenty of shots, too.”

Duke Loses At Virginia Tech, But That May Not Be The Worst News ... (Duke Basketball Report)

Duke lost a hard-fought game to Virginia Tech Monday night, 78-75. We can absolutely live with Duke's effort, especially from Kyle Filopowski, ...

Filipowski split on a pair with 1:30 left and the Blue Devils down three. It’ll be easier to do that if Whitehead isn’t out long-term, but there’s nothing anyone can do about that except hope for the best. However, when the game hinges on a call or, in this case, non-call, it stinks. Roach missed the front end of a one-on-one with 2:17 left and Duke down three. Whitehead jumped for a ball and grabbed his calf in the air and immediately headed to the bench. They got killed on threes in the first half and defended the bomb much better in the second half. Duke could have brought the ball up court before the Hokie defense was organized. But the blow staggered Filipowski and Virginia Tech unquestionably gained an advantage with :04 left. And he would have helped at the end of the game, too. The problem with having your best rebounder miss threes is that he’s not likely to get the rebounds. And early in the second half, Duke stormed the rest of the way back - and then Whitehead jumped for a loose ball against Hokie Justyn Mutts, only to grab his calf before he came down. Duke started out brilliantly, running to a 7-0 lead before Virginia Tech heated up.

CASSELL DEFENSE: Duke men's basketball falls in final seconds at ... (Duke Chronicle)

The Blue Devils and Hokies dueled to the final seconds of the game as Virginia Tech took a 78-75 victory.

Aggressive drives and two offensive rebounds by Proctor supplemented the long ball as Duke battled to a slim five-point advantage with 13:47 to play. The Blue Devils came out of the gates trying to replicate the hot hand from beyond the arc controlled entirely by their opponents in the first half by hitting their first five 3-point attempts. Filipowski finished his night with a career-high 29 points on 9-for-17 shooting and 10 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the year. Proctor and Filipowski then calmly hit back-to-back 3-pointers to close the Hokie lead to one at the start of the second half. Disruptive Virginia Tech defense on the first possession with the lyrics of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman'' coming from the student section led to a shot clock-beating freshman forward Dariq Whitehead 3-pointer to start off the scoring. Virginia Tech quickly found—and stuck with—its attack that notably sunk the Blue Devils 82-67 in the ACC championship game in March. The Blue Devils could not convert on either, leading to Duke playing from down by three with a minute left. MJ Collins put the Hokies back on top with 13.6 seconds to go on a pull-up jumper over the outstretched arm of Duke’s Mark Mitchell. It was a battle of which squad would miss first, and it was Duke that fell into a slump from the field as the clock wound into the closing minutes. Even after each team built considerable leads, nothing was out of the question for what was to come next until the final buzzer sounded. With under seven minutes to play, a Hunter Cattoor three—followed by a Grant Basile shot from near the free-throw line as the shot clock expired—handed the Hokies a 72-67 advantage as the Cassell Coliseum crowd roared as loud as it had all night. Before you could blink, Virginia Tech came back to send the game into crunch time.

Confident and aggressive, the New Jersey native was a spark from midrange and beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes. That night, the Wolfpack blistered Duke with strong shooting and the Blue Devils could never fight back while losing 84-60. He was shooting and playmaking and scoring like the future first-round pick NBA scouts project him to be.
